I mean, it'd be safer for roads to use wheels and more stable in mud to use tracks

Tracks (and wheels) can only scale heights up to a certain degree, and can potentially get stuck in rubble and ruins. Legs would be less efficient on relatively stable ground but would be able to take you places that treads can't.

Of course, it's also a question of just how you build legs. You're dealing with different dynamics if you're talking traditional Japanese mechs with two legs, versus more animal-like mechs with four legs, or even something more akin to a spider with multiple independent legs (potentially with climbing/grabbing/pulling hooks/claws of some kind).

And, of course, there's always more exotic designs...

A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you; you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if someone discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, they will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, that person will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the person will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in "Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)

Then you should probably become a psychologist immediately, because you're apparently more skilled than about 80% of actual psychologists.

If you think you can give someone a visual once-over and definitively establish the totality of their mental state, then either you've got magical powers or you're an asshole.

sodium-chloride posted...
I'd be surprised if this lady had a severely debilitating mental condition given she is dressed appropriately, looks like she has good hygiene (hair is well kept, face looks clear) and is able to hold items while walking normally. So I don't buy that she is mentally not together and/or homeless.

Mental impairment isn't an all-or-nothing switch that just toggles one day and you go from completely normal to full crazy. It's usually a slow slide by degrees.

It's entirely possible for someone to be relatively functional but still have manic episodes or psychotic breaks. Especially during periods of extreme stress or trauma. It's not impossible for someone to be able to care for themselves (for the most part), yet still lapse into dissociative states or impaired reasoning. It's usually the growing incidence of those sorts of events that lead to mentally impaired people becoming homeless in the first place (and the fact that homeless people are still generally able to keep themselves alive shows even some of the more advanced cases still have periods of relative lucidity). It's usually a slow, gradual slide towards problems, not one day you're perfectly fine, holding down a job and grooming, and the next day you're laying in an alley covered in feces.

Hell, go ask Zang about progression of symptoms - he's been experiencing it first-hand for a while now.

And again, I'm not saying that this woman isn't an absolute piece of shit with no real redeeming qualities or justifications for her actions (she probably is). But we literally know almost nothing about her, so making absolutist statements or being sarcastically dismissive about the entire concept of "context" is itself kind of shitty behavior.

Context always matters. It's why our legal system specifically considers intent as well as consequences. Murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide, and self-defense are all cases where one person kills another, but three of those killers are getting very different prison sentences, and one of them is walking away without punishment.

And to take it even farther, it's why most people tend to see killing in wartime or as punishment for crime (ie, the death penalty) in a very different light than just shanking a dude in an alley because you like his shoes. In every one of those scenarios someone is still winding up dead because of the actions of someone else, but why it happened is almost more important than what happened.

...weeeeeeeeeell.

There is the argument that she might be mentally ill. Like you'll occasionally get crazy homeless people who'll say all manner of shit for no real reason just because they're kind of broken. And if that's the case there's justification to say that what she actually needs more than anything is therapy or drugs as opposed to hostility or punishment. There's also the possibility that she's just really high on drugs or something that's seriously impairing her judgment to the point where she barely even knows what she's saying. In which case maybe some sort of treatment/rehab would be a better option.

Sarcasm aside, context really is important. Sure, odds are she's just an asshole and the world would be much better off if someone were to just throw her under the next passing subway train, but there's always the possibility of other factors being in play that we're never going to know from a terse online article. And lack of details can easily radically influence our perception of situations in very mistaken ways.

It's kind of a huge problem that people today are fully willing to assume they know literally everything about a person and condemn them for their rest of their life just from reading three paragraphs of clickbait or a couple shitty tweets.

EA is actually doing pretty well for themselves

Yeah, but they're doing pretty well for themselves by pushing predatory microtransactions and gambling mechanics, churning out low-effort cookie-cutter titles year after year, and by repeatedly acquiring popular developer studios and then slowly exploiting their existing IP, corrupting their corporate culture, destroying everything that ever made them popular in the first place, and then dismantling them for raw resources.

EA is like a sci-fi horror movie alien. Almost everything they've done for the past 30+ years has helped to incrementally make the gaming industry worse for people who actually play games.

And it's not like they treat their employees all that much better, if that's all you really care about. Devs in the industry have complained about EA corporate practices for years. "Well, at least they haven't been caught in a sexual harassment scandal yet" isn't really that much of a positive endorsement.

in a game like civ cheating honestly feels wrong.

Cheating in a game is never wrong. Unless it's competitive multiplayer and you're doing something that gives you an unfair advantage over your opponents, it should be entirely up to you how you want to enjoy any given game as a player. Go ahead and abuse that infinite money/XP glitch or cheat code. Save editor your stats to the max and hack and slash your way through the game like an angry indestructible god. If it's fun, more power to you.

Cheating in some games can feel a bit boring after a while, though. But the easy answer there is that you can always just stop cheating. If Civ feels kind of boring when you start with infinite gold and 200 settlers and just explode out across the map and annihilate every other culture you encounter, just dial it back. If you're playing an RPG on ultra-casual mode and feel like the combat would be more fun if it required you to be a bit more tactical, feel free to crank the difficulty up a bit.

I think the only real problem is when you get assholes who want to gatekeep how other people play games. Like the sort of people who act like giving Dark Souls an easy mode would somehow usher in the apocalypse. Or who shit on you for playing games using exploits, glitches, cheats, mods, or other "unacceptable" means.

It's a fucking game. Games are meant to be fun. If you're having fun, you're doing it right. If you're complaining about how other people have fun, you're an asshole. It's pretty simple.

Playing the same songs over and over again gets boring

Unfortunately most of the audience doesn't give a shit about your new work. Especially if you haven't really been hugely popular as a band for years.

You can easily notice this at most concerts. Watch the general audience mood/reaction to newer songs versus their reaction to popular hits.

Noticing that reaction is part of why some bands eventually sour on their older work. They can feel annoyed that the audience only really cares about their older work, that they wrote when they were essentially different people who saw the world differently, and which they grew tired of long ago. But the audience paid to see your hits, so if you don't play them, they can sour on you pretty quickly as well.

At the extreme end, you get stuff like the time Sting from the Police indulged in his own weird musical tastes and did a concert where he mostly performed on the lute, and you could tell most of the audience was just regretting wasting the money they spent on the ticket. They were basically dead silent until he finally did an actual song from the Police and the audience suddenly revived a bit. There used to be an audio clip of that out there somewhere.

No one gave a shit about that when they were busy blaming Trump for literally everything bad that happened during his term, though. Or when people shat on Obama for stuff he didn't have any power over. Or Bush. Or Clinton...

It's almost like half the country each picks a side, and then treats the guy in the office as either their champion or a supervillain, regardless of anything they do or what they're actually responsible for.

It's also a door that swings two ways - Clinton got tons of credit for things he had nothing to do with, because he was a charming and popular Democrat who lucked out and got to be in charge during a time when multiple economic bubbles were forming and the economy was strong.

Presidents today actually have far more power than the original Presidents did (or were ever intended to have), but they're still much more limited than most people treat them as being.

And they said they wanted a live action remake of Shrek. Seriously how would that even work? It'd be a bunch of CGI with realistic people.

Just have Mike Myers dress up like Fat Bastard and paint him green.

All you need to do then is CGI a talking mouth onto a donkey. Or go the Cats route (the musical, not the terrible movie) and put people in furry suits to play the animal characters.

I'm not sure what's worse - being a scummy "news" site that leans hard into shitty clickbait titles, or being a scummy message board user who reposts those clickbait titles to get responses.

Seems like in both cases there've got to be better ways to live your life.

Doubly so when you're basically just stealing Duckbear's gimmick if you're reposting stories from Daily Mail.

In Canada (or at least Ontario) all in pricing is the law.

Yeah, but that's Canada. You weirdos put gravy on your fries and drink milk out of bags.

You can't expect sane and rational behavior out of people who are always drunk on Molsons and maple syrup.
