This, so very, very much.

It doesn't make a game more fun or fulfilling, it just makes it feel more like a burden. It feels like I'm being forced to play at certain times or for certain amounts of time to "earn" the stuff I want, to the point where the game stops being a game and starts being a job.

If I can't be a completionist, even as a later adopter, I'm far more inclined to drop a game entirely than I am to keep playing. Or avoid it entirely from the very beginning.

If they really want people to vote in the polls, they should have it give you extra karma every time you vote.

Karma is worthless, but people are obsessed with it anyway. You'd absolutely see an uptick in people voting if there was a tangible (if useless) reward for it.

It's like how, back in the day, people actually bought GameFAQs merch solely because it gave a karma boost.

Any of you don't like listening to anything while driving?

I pretty much require the radio to be on. It started back when I was going to college, and I'd often drive there/home at night, so I kind of needed something on to keep me awake while I drove. I found listening (and singing alone) actually helped stave off Highway Hypnosis pretty well.

Now I'm just so used to it I generally turn the radio on in any car the moment I turn the key, before I even bother putting on the seatbelt.

CedarPointcp posted...
yeah i mean you hate listening to music or the radio and don't listen to podcasts either when you're driving. Just complete silence etc.......

I avoid silence in general. Ever since I was a really young kid, I basically needed noise in the background to focus (I used to turn the TV on for background noise just to do my homework, or when I was reading/studying in general). And as I've gotten older I've gotten so used to multitasking I kind of have to engage all of my senses or I get distracted. I put podcasts on when I'm playing video games (except when they're games with lots of dialogue where I have to listen to the game). I put podcasts or music on when I read. I even have trouble watching movies outside of a movie theater because of it - my immediate instinct is to start browsing the Internet while the movie is on.

Even as I type this, I'm playing a video in the background and listening to a podcast.

After about 40 years of living my life that way, silence kind of freaks me the fuck out. I can't even sleep in perfect silence, because I'm so used to the sound of the motor running in my air conditioner (which I run like 11 months out of the year).

That's not even a good argument in and of itself anyway, considering almost no one in any of the games actually camouflages themselves at all.

I mean, everyone wears robot parts for decoration, not because it somehow disguises them. And plenty of them slather blue paint on themselves or wear blue in their clothes (which stands out pretty blatantly in nature). The Oseram are about the only ones who might actually blend in (because they tend to wear earth-tone colors), except they also wear lots of metal so they'd be shiny and clinking around as well.

And even ignoring all that, the Nora are pretty much the only tribe that even remotely uses stealth as a tactic, so they'd be the only ones who would even benefit from camo regardless (and they're still pretty bad at it).

Even South Park has gone through some very rough patches. But honestly, I lost interest in the show overall a looong time ago. Like before the seasons where they were making fun of Game of Thrones.

And even speaking as someone who pretty much hated That 70s Show as a whole, I think most people would agree it ran at least a few seasons longer than it ever should have.

New Simpsons is still better than Family Guy

Yeah, but that's like saying stage 4 cancer is better than full blown AIDS.

And while Internet hipsters will deny this, during its first few seasons Family Guy was absolutely better than the Simpsons that was coming out at the same time. It wasn't until later that Family Guy started getting really terrible (just like the Simpsons did).

As a general rule of thumb, most live-action shows should never run more than 5-6 seasons, and even animated shows shouldn't run more than 10. After that point you've pretty much run out of ideas and are so burned out that you're mostly just going through the motions to cash the check, and your show is going to be more or less creatively bankrupt and soul-numbingly banal.

Simpsons and it isn't even close lmao

I love Seinfeld but The Simpsons was an absolute cultural juggernaut. The amount of merchandise sold is astronomical. The very fact it's still airing new episodes after 30 years, where Seinfeld didn't last for 10, speaks for itself.

I'd agree with all of this except for the very last part.

Even aside from the fact that it's waaay easier to keep an animated show chugging along in zombie form than it is to keep live-action going the same way (short of constantly replacing the entire cast the way soap operas do), there's kind of a difference between being kicked off the air because no one is watching your show anymore and deliberately walking away because you've already made a ton of money and are getting tired of doing it (and maybe don't want to get typecast for the entire rest of your career to be able to do literally nothing else - which is another way in which animated shows tend to have an edge over live-acting).

Simpsons probably should have been cancelled before it even hit 10 years, creatively speaking. At this point people watch it more out of nostalgic memory and cultural inertia than they do because it's actually worth watching (ie, the same niche Family Guy has managed to slip itself into, and arguably South Park as well). It's the television equivalent of comfort food. The vast majority of its actual socio-cultural impact happened within the first decade, and after that it's mostly been coasting on fumes.

In a lot of ways, it's not entirely dissimilar from how Seinfeld did extremely well in syndicated reruns for years after it went off the air, in spite of not making new episodes anymore. At a certain point the idea of a show becomes more important than the show itself.

Yes, but only in the early years of the licensed racing games; Daytona 96 had some of the most realist damage physics in a racing game that I have ever played, and for good reason: Car manufacturers did not like seeing their cars damaged in what was essentially used as demolition derby simulators.

We had it on the computer at school and would load up Talladega, then as the race started, we would start at the back and turn around and try to create the largest chain reaction crash to knock out as many other racers in a single crash. If you hit the handbrake and drifted sideways at the right point you could take out both lanes and potentially the entire field in a single crash.

I once figured out you could rack up huge points in Hard Drivin' by taking a hard right-hand turn shortly after the first race started, drive down a side road to a barn, and plow directly into the cow (which would cause the game to let out a loud digitized "Mooooo" sound). Then you could just keep backing up and hitting the cow over and over again until time ran out. It'd put you on the High Score list by a wide margin.

After that, there was literally no reason to do anything else.

Depends entirely on context.

If I'm just getting mildly irritated or nervous or upset and someone is like "All right, calm down, we'll sort this out" then I'm fine.

But if I've been getting riled up and am kind of yelling a bit because of how annoyed I am, and the person I'm mad at says something like "Calm down, the neighbors/bystanders will hear", then my brain is going to interpret that as "I care more about what other people think than I give a shit about your problems," at which point I'm probably going to deliberately get louder as a sort of fuck you to the person I'm arguing with. Same goes for situations where I have genuine concerns or issues and the person I'm talking to says something like "I don't want to fight about this" as a means of shutting down the conversation (leaving everything unaddressed and ignored). Divisiveness is annoying because it implies the other person doesn't really care about you as a person.

My reaction to what people say almost always depends more on how I'm interpreting their intent than on the literal meaning of their words. If you say something nice or polite but there's a bit of venom behind it, I'm going to react poorly. It's one of the reasons why I don't like how two-faced Southerners can be - I'd rather have someone from New York call me an asshole to my face than have someone from Georgia say "Bless your heart!" and then stab me in the back as soon as I turn around. I prefer people who are honest about their opinions and intentions over people who are passive-aggressive or "deceitfully polite".
