Because there's unfortunately very little causal link between "good game" and "profitable game." Microtransactions and excessive DLC and loot boxes and annual rehashes are not done for the sake of making good games, they're done for the sake of manipulating consumers into giving up more money.

It's partially true. You can't outright buy a company that isn't for sale, but there are ways to make purchases that can ultimately lead to ownership of a company, regardless of whether or not the current owners want to sell it.

More about taking out competition without needing to make games that could compete. Doesn't matter how much they spend if people have to buy an XBox instead of a PlaStation for all the IPs they got from Zenimax and Activision.

I expect they will be going after TakeTwo next.

considering the two consoles have always sold as much as the other, as it turns out they also did last gen as well, this isn't really a problem

and people are absolutely going to be buying xboxes for starfield

You mean on Windows, that they make.

Consider it like this. They bought Steam and said you can't have games there anymore, it all goes to Windows Store.

Well, right now, they have bought the biggest western cross system publishers. The next three biggest remaining (EA, TakeTwo and Ubisoft) combined made less than the Microsoft gaming division in a yearly revenue chart. Zenimax and Activision were much bigger than them.

For some of the previously biggest cross system IPs (CoD alone was the third highest selling game series, only behind Mario and Tetris), people now have no choice but Microsoft, no matter their opinion on the company or systems. Nintendo might get a few pity handouts, but unlike Sony, they weren't really competition for the same games. People would have a Nintendo for the exclusives and a different console for the cross system stuff. And PS4 sold a lot more than the One last gen.

Microsoft attempted to buy Nintendo when it was making the Xbox

nintendo was riding very high back then, their only competitor being sony who was far behind them at the time. nintendo was by and large the defacto leader of the market then.

whereas i specifically said:

Uhh, it depends. Nintendo is a publicly traded company. Its called a hostile take over. Microsoft can go out and buy enough shares without nintendos consent to become the majority stakeholder. But it also depends on who owns the stocks, and Nintendo can always opt to a buyback to prevent it.

It's what nearly happened to Ubisoft a while back:

Activision is much more turn key anyways. It is pretty easy to pump out CoD games and WoW expansions and the fans will lap them up no matter how lackluster they are. Nintendo has had some pretty big slumps in thier career. They found a goldmine in systems like the Wii & Switch, but they have had some pretty rough spots as well. I am far more confident that Microsoft will not F up Activision than they would Nintendo. The later would almost be a given after what they did to Rare.

the head of rare talked about how they actually went to microsoft asking to play around with the kinect

unless a studio is formed for a specific purpose, like 343i and coalition, microsoft gives their studios pretty much complete autonomy

for some reason this is hard for people to understand, which is why they bring up rare a lot, despite ignoring the fact that rare was nothing like the n64 era rare even before they were purchased.

viva pinata was fucking godlike though

but the game they made before they were bought was starfox adventures, and we all know just how terrible that fuckin game was

They were N64-era Rare pretty much right up until they were purchased, with the purchase being one of the last straws that resulted in much of the creative talent behind their best games leaving the studio. It's inaccurate to say that Microsoft killed them, but joining Microsoft was part of what did.

MetalGarurumon posted...

It was a decent enough game, it just really didn't need to have Starfox shoehorned into it. It was also very clearly rushed, which makes sense given that they had to get it out before Microsoft took ownership of the studio (which is part of why Fox was so glaringly shoehorned in instead of being integrated more meaningfully).

That's going more into absurd hypotheticals half the time. Then again, it's possible Microsoft masterminded the Activision scandal to lower the value making them easy to buy.

"Attempted to buy" is a fucking meaningless statement. In this case, it just means they talked to them. The US has "attempted to buy" Greenland on multiple occasions, and got as far.
