Not really. The company that created Halo is long dead and gone. Sony's trying to buy (it's not really a done deal just yet) the company that created Destiny.

MetalGarurumon posted...
the company that constantly claimed they wanted to be independant, Bungie

They never really wanted to be independent. They just wanted the freedom to make whatever game they wanted to when they wanted to. Microsoft refused to let them make anything other than Halo so they left. Activision constantly meddled with Destiny to the point where they broke it in multiple ways. Then they kind of sold out to NetEase. Bungie hasn't gone for like 20 minutes since 2000 without taking money from someone else.

The real problem is that a company like Bungie literally cannot survive in the current video game industry as an independent publisher. It's the same reason why Obsidian eventually sold out - they were pretty much dying as an independent no matter how popular they were or how many people they could get to fund them via Kickstarter. Devs larger than a one or two man team generally need the funding from a larger publisher to exist. The downside being that those larger publishers tend to push their own corporate culture on the studio, until everything that made it popular in the first place dies and all that's really left is the name.

Hop103 posted...
Man, what comes around; goes around. I never expected to see Halo on a Sony system in my lifetime

You still won't. Bungie doesn't own the rights to the IP anymore. They sold them to Microsoft, as part of the terms of letting them leave in the first place.

ParanoidObsessive

Hard to say. I was always a kind of paradoxical kid, because while I loved learning, I kind of hated classes in general. A combination of bad teachers, an iron-clad curriculum, and simultaneously rushing through topics while also having to slow the whole process down so the worst students could keep up usually made classes boring at best and torturous at worst. I learned way better when I just did my own research on loads of topics in my own free time.

Not helped by the fact that, if I thought a teacher was an asshole, I tended to shut down and become obstructionist and anti-authoritarian and just started fucking with them. While generally not doing any homework but still passing tests so they couldn't justify failing me. Those teachers almost certainly hated me.

Teachers I respected tended to love me, though. Which always led me to wonder if any of those teachers ever talked about me in the teachers' lounge and realized they had radically different opinions of me, and if they ever tried to figure out precisely why I treated some teachers like shit and others not (but that would have required introspection from apathetic disillusioned asshats who were terrible at their job but hid behind tenure, so probably not).

I probably had the most fun in my Graphics Arts classes (basically sort of a hybrid computer class mixed with desktop publishing where you could work on art projects or semi-professional jobs), mainly because those were mostly just self-guided fuck-arounds where I spent most of my time playing computer games. Or working on my own projects (which was arguably the beginning of a lot of my later writing and web design activity in college and afterwards). Psychology was another favorite class (and is part of what led me into majoring in it in college), but I almost hesitate to call it a "subject" because I only had one year of it in high school.

Other than that... gym was actually enjoyable when we could do solo work and not group team games (which I hated) - in my later high school years I was able to spend most of my time in the weight room or using the school track (which worked in tandem with the fact that I was running on the track team at the time). Though I did kind of enjoy when we got to play volleyball (because I was very good at it). Ironically, I got better at sports like soccer and hockey while in college - if I'd been better at them sooner, I'd probably have enjoyed gym even more.

History was always interesting, but rarely so the way it was taught in school (and it didn't help that high school classes tended to focus on US history, which I've always found incredibly boring - I find antiquity to be a much more interesting period). Same with Science (though hands on labwork in Chemistry and Physics was kind of fun). English should have been fun in theory (I loved reading and did it for my own enjoyment constantly), but the literature they picked to study always seemed to be stuff I was never really interested in, and grammar lessons were generally presented in ways that made them dry and boring. I absolutely loathed Math, though (mainly because of the fact that the absolute worst shit-tier teachers I ever had always seemed to be the math teachers, and it discouraged me from ever pursuing any career in a STEM field that would require math in any way).

Forced "vocational" classes tended to be meh at best - stuff like Home Ec, Cooking, Sewing never interested me at all, and stuff like Art or Music always felt less engaging because being artistic with other people judging your work sucked the fun out of it. I was terrible at shop classes (I've never been all that mechanically inclined), though my Architectural Design class was fun (and actually encouraged my best friend to later pursue a career in Drafting/CAD).

The only other class/subject I can remember taking was French, which I wasn't super-great at or enthusiastic about (though I was good enough to be in the French Honor Society). I always had a much easier time reading it than speaking it, and I never really mastered the knack of understanding it intuitively (kind of necessary to hold conversations) as opposed to essentially translating it as you go (which is a much slower process). I made it as far as AP French V, but never bothered taking the AP test because I was pretty sure I was going to fail it.

and, as what typically happens in RMT situations, is that the item(s) are going to be bound on use, so you cannot ever sell it like they claim you could

It'll probably be like how Kingdom of Loathing used to handle limited-time items.

Namely, you acquire them in-game and can trade or sell them as much as you want, and they can change hands dozens of times. But you can't actually use them. The moment someone uses the item, it binds to their account and is theirs forever.

Sort of like the idea of people buying, selling, or trading factory sealed action figures, but the moment you open the packaging it loses all resell value. Except in this case it would be like if you became physically incapable of ever reselling it.

That thought doesn't seem very fun.

Also, the actual scientific explanation for the uncanny valley seems to be that humans have an innate repulsion towards corpses (which look human, because they are, but which look slightly "off" from being dead), because corpses become sources of bacteria, toxic effluents, and spreading diseases when decaying, so there's an evolutionary advantage to staying away from them.

It's arguably the same reason why funerary behaviors began - cultures that buried or burned corpses were going to be healthier than ones that kept grandma's corpse around until she turned into pudding.

It wasn't until much, much, much later that it turned out that it also seems to trigger off "lifelike" dolls, robots, computer graphics, and possibly clowns.

Seriously. Although this is the beginning of the roman empire, i'm convinced that almost all of its problems stem from this stupid bullshit. So many reigns ended by assassinations by dumbass military commanders with dreams of grandure.

That shit started before literally anyone involved in Caesar's assassination was ever born, though.

A more realistic argument is that the republic was already dead and had been for decades, and the people opposed to Caesar were trying to save something that had already been corrupted and lost 80 years before. The moment Tiberius Gracchus was clubbed to death the republic was utterly doomed, because it was the moment that murdering your political rivals gained acceptability (and with each repetition, it became more acceptable and more ruthless, and the idea of "tradition" and "mores" eroded more and more). It opened the door to a succession of strongmen who seized autocratic power and ruled through violence (and the threat of violence). Caesar was just following in their footsteps, and wound up ultimately hoist by his own petard.

Look into the history of Marius, Sulla, and the Gracchi. They basically started the slide that Caesar's death and Augustus' ascension merely completed.

You should probably watch a longer video. Or a better one.

There's a lot more to it than that.

For starters, the idea that Cleopatra was corrupting him and he was flirting with the idea of becoming king (which it seems like he actually was, in fact if not explicitly in name). And the underlying social tension that had been manifesting as conflict between the Optimates and Populares for years beforehand.

Of course, the real problem is that in killing him, they just fulfill all of their fears by allowing Octavian to accomplish all of the things they were afraid of Caesar doing.

It's weird how people say the PS3 sold more than the Xbox 360.

Do people actually say that? Nearly all the commentary I've ever heard about that generation is that both Sony and Microsoft generally sold similar numbers of units, while Nintendo absolutely blew the doors off both of them in terms of sales because the Wii was an unholy whirlwind. So it's more like a tie between the two while Nintendo "won".

(Unless you're talking to someone who dismisses Nintendo's success because most of those sales were to casual gamers who were buying the Wii more as a gimmicky toy than an actual gaming console, in which case they tend to just say that Microsoft and Sony were equally successful.)

At most, you'll occasionally hear Sony supporters mention that the PS3's weak showing early on was less about the console/brand itself and more about their insistence on forcing a Blu-Ray player into it (thus raising the price) to win a non-gaming format war, but since that a) is literally true, and b) successfully helped Sony win that particular format war, it's a cogent point.

You'll also occasionally hear people point out that Sony's weak start in that generation was because they were a bit too cocky after their easy dominance in the PS2 era (true), and that the same sort of arrogance is what kicked Microsoft in the dick when they went from being cocky about the 360's success and shat out the Xbone in the worst possible way (also true). In both cases, both companies had to recover from a weak (if not disasterous) start to play catch up, though the PS3 did a much better job overcoming that false start than the Xbone ever did (and Sony didn't have to resort to the panic decision of withholding sales figures to try and hide just how badly they were doing the way Microsoft did).

I don't think I've ever heard anyone really say that either company "won" that generation (especially since, if all you care about is sales figures, then Nintendo did, easily). Then again, I respect myself way too much as a person to spend time on Sony or Microsoft centric console boards, so I've generally insulated myself from the worst bleating of the fully indoctrinated console drones on either side.

This.

The problem is, he basically just announced he was working on it. But we have no idea whether it's coming out this year, next year, or five years from now. We don't really know how far into development it is, and we know almost nothing about it. Even the trailer doesn't tell us much, because as people pointed out it's basically just using the Stardew engine with different graphical assets, which might just be how he's brainstorming ideas rather than what the finished product is intended to be.

We don't even know if it's the next game he's going to release, because he's mentioned he's also working on a third game at the same time (which we know absolutely nothing about).

(We also don't know whether or not Haunted Chocolatier is set in the same universe as Stardew - the dev has mentioned in the past that one of the games he's working on is set in the same universe and implied that the other one isn't - but we don't know which one this one is.)

To be fair, though, Stardew is awesome (I'm literally playing it right now - I'm on Year 4 Fall and saving up for the gold clock which is the last thing I need for full completion on this run), so I'm more than willing to give whatever new games he comes up with a chance, because they have better odds of being good than most games the mainstream triple-A devs are shitting out these days. And the idea of being a whimsical candy shop owner feels cool - even if I'm going to play it as if it's a Willy Wonka origin story RPG.

The assumption is that the game is probably just going to be an updated spiritual adaptation of Recettear, though - in the same way that Stardew is basically just Harvest Moon.

There's a girl I've been waiting to see. And I really get the feeling that she likes me.

But she don't want no wild romance.

It'll probably last for a while, until Microsoft can start dismantling the infrastructure.

Ironically, since Microsoft will own the name, they could easily attach it to a new studio later and recreate Activision as a development studio. Sort of the same way that the Atari name has been passed around and attached to completely unrelated companies for a while now.
