I was more responding to the "built into the medium" part, whereas it seems you were leaning more into the "without strong source material or detailed plan" part. So we're in agreement then. ~thumbs up~

Which is the primary reason that, IMO, almost all TV series with continuing plots don't work very well. Lost would be the poster child. I you aren't going somewhere then you're just trying to get me to watch next week: that doesn't do anything for me in the long run. It's a weakness built in to the medium without strong source material or detailed plan.

The problem there is less about the format of TV, and more about the writers.

The problem with Lost is that they essentially promised SHOCKING REVELATIONS yet had literally no idea what the answers to those questions were. And when people started pestering them, they just asked even more questions to distract you. Until it became utterly impossible to ever pay off in any satisfying way. This is the same problem the Battlestar Galactica remake had - they've admitted they had absolutely no idea where they were going or who the Cylons actually were until they arbitrarily decided, even if those choices made no sense at the time.

But creators/showrunners/script editors CAN pay off on longer-term storytelling IF they plan out the story in advance. Babylon 5 was the famous example of this - J. Michael Straczynski had a five-year story arc entirely planned out, and actually came up with ways to justify actors leaving/dying in advance so that he could write them out of the show if he needed to, no matter how important their character was to the overall arc. There were definitely hiccups (mostly from network execs screwing them over a bit vis-a-vis cancellation/renewal, and the lead actor suffering from legit schizophrenia mid-season 1 and needing to retire to seek medical care), but for the most part they kept to the original story outline, and to this day it has a fanatical fanbase loyal to it because of it.

Supernatural is sort of example of both methodologies - it started out as a show where the writers had a pretty good idea of where the plot was going for the first five seasons, but after that it kept getting renewed year after year after year and they wound up having to constantly keep coming up with new storylines on the fly, each of which became weaker and weaker as they went because they'd sort of lose track of where they were going (and power creep made things more and more ridiculous).

Long-running TV shows can write on the fly if they're not promising a dramatic ending or answer to underlying story arc questions, but if a writer wants to build a show that way, they pretty much NEED to plan stuff out in advance. Which rarely happens, because most creators are fairly lazy, or get screwed over by their network (ie, there were multi-year plans for shows like Sliders an Andromeda that got derailed because the original writers got forced off the show and replaced by people who didn't follow the original outline).

For example the interactions between Tywin and Arya at Harrenhall. That only exists in the show and provided a lot of compelling insight into both characters.

That's pretty much an example of their fanservice mentality, though. "What's that? People like Arya and Tywin? Fuck it, let's put them in a scene together."

The flip-side of that was Ros - she was their OC DONUT STEEL character that they liked so much they decided to turn her one throwaway scene into a much longer running role at least until they killed her off.

Those are the tendencies they had right from the beginning, which weren't as terrible while they were still mostly stuck to the rails of the existing plot, but which spiraled out of control once they ran out of source material to work from.

It's also not a huge plus in their favor, when you realize they left out scenes from the books that gave better insight into the personalities of other characters or events. So things kind of balance out a bit.

One could argue that their main flaw was that they got lost in the idea of having little moments or cool scenes, but never really thought about how they all flowed together as part of the larger narrative. Which, again, wasn't a huge problem so long as they had the road-map to tell them where to go, but once they had to start plotting their own course everything fell apart because they simply weren't Big Picture type people.

I thought the problem was that they ran out of source material and then forgot who all the characters were.

It's still absolutely worth watching imo.

It's more that they never really understood who the characters were in the first place, but that didn't matter so long as they were following someone else's story.

When they had to come up with their own, they started leaning too hard into fan service (People like Arya? Great, she's a super-hero now. People like Tyrion? Great, let's keep him front-and-center), even when it didn't necessarily serve the story.

Plus, they've said in the past that Martin told them how the story ends (which I assume means Dany dead and Bran on the throne), but not how it was going to get there, which meant they had to be good enough at storytelling to fill in the blanks and actually get those characters where they needed to be narratively, by the end. But they wasted three seasons avoiding any real character development because they're bad at storytelling, and then realized at the end they only had one season left (which was shortened because they wanted to leave and didn't really give a fuck), so everything got crammed in at the end and felt ridiculously unearned and unjustified.

At that point, they should have been like "Ehh, you know what? Fuck it." and just went with their own, completely different ending. It's not like Martin would be able to do anything about it at that point, and if they'd followed their fan-pandering to its natural conclusion, they at least could have had an ending that felt shallow but which people actually kind of enjoyed.

Or they could have gone with the Dany/Jon/Tyrion having threesomes ending that book readers have been predicting for a while based on in-story hints.

Which they then fucked over by dropping that contract because Netflix offered them a metric shitton of money to make bad films and TV shows. It's the best (worst) of both worlds!

Oh, and I remember I loved going on the Shockwave, in spite of the fact that we'd heard rumors that someone got their head kicked clean off their body because of it (not sure if that was just BS or real - though either way it didn't stop us from riding it).

And at least one time I was at Great Adventure I basically went back and forth between Splashwater Falls (where you're absolutely soaked to the bone with water) and Freefall (where you go up about 70 feet and then drop straight back down at full speed), because I discovered that the wind-shear from Freefall basically insta-dried me off from Splashwater, and there were like no lines on either ride that day. And I was absolutely sick as a dog later that night, either from sucking down too much polluted water or from massive chills (or tainted food, or something else), so that was a personal story of misery and I still went back again after that.

As a side note, I also have a friend who goes to Disney World fairly often, and he went on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and it immediately caused him to start passing a kidney stone, which is apparently a thing the ride does waaay more often than you'd think any ride should. Or at least any ride that they continue to allow to stay open.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Thunder_Mountain_Railroad#Kidney_stones

He was in immense pain, had to be taken to the medical area, and he said it was basically the most painful thing he's ever experienced in his life (I can relate, I've had gall stones). And he's going back again in about a year or two (though I assume he won't ride the same ride again).

Also, I can't remember 100% whether it was Rolling Thunder or the Runaway Train, but I remember it literally broke 30 seconds before I got on it. I was waiting on line and a fat guy who cut in front of me was so fat he straight up broke the safety harness and they had to empty the entire train and kick everyone off line. Yeah they suck to wear. They make my face sweaty and they scratch at my beard and theyre always making my glasses foggy

These are more or less my issues (though not the beard - unless most stereotypical nerds these days I tend to keep my beard pretty neatly trimmed and I've never really had a problem). Overheating and glasses.

Also, they never really seat well on my face, so they're often shifting and I wind up compulsively having to readjust them, which is probably not great because it means I'm constantly touching the mask (and potentially my face) with my hands that have been touching everything else beforehand.

On the plus side, I don't have asthma, so I haven't really had any major problems breathing in them, though I do know some people who have. Regardless of how often adjl posts about how the oxygen level is the same and thus masks don't impair breathing in any way whatsoever.

Lots of those pre history viruses will not be able to infecte anything nowadays as most creatures are too different now then when those viruses were dominant.

You need to be more worried about the fungus spores/bacteria. As those can infected a wider range of creatures.

Ehh, modern humans (ie, homo sapiens) have existed since before the last glacial period reached its maximum, and even before that hominid species in general that technically count as "human" (Neanderthal, Cro Magnon, etc) were around. Obviously there isn't going to be anything popping out of the ice cap or Antarctica (unless Lovecraft was right), but there are plenty of places where tundra and permafrost has trapped relatively recent corpses that are starting to defrost. So something might still slip out that's ready to hop to humans.

And being different now isn't necessarily a positive - it can go hand-in-hand with humans having lost general immunity to diseases we used to possess. The majority of modern diseases stem from prolonged human/animal contact deriving from domestication, which means few pre-date agriculture/herding... but if something's been out of circulation for a while it might hit us harder than it would have millennia ago.

Bacteria is definitely an issue (anthrax being a common fear), but it's not the only issue.

I just think it's hilarious how the same people who were screaming stuff like "Trust the science!" and "The CDC knows more than you ever could, don't rely on your own feelings/thoughts/research and just do whatever they tell you to do!" followed along and hand waved contradictory bullshit like how they said masks weren't needed back when this started, as long as they were making people more frightened, but the second they say something optimistic and in the opposite direction suddenly they're a bunch of heartless idiots who can't be trusted.

Except that's not really the case at all, and most of the people complaining aren't really complaining for the reasons you're implying.

It's more a case of...

The CDC: Okay, the research suggests people won't need to wear masks if they're vaccinated.

Idiots: Hey, did you hear that? Everybody can take their masks off now!

The CDC: No, that's not what we said.

Idiots: Everybody can take their masks off! Woo! Party!

...

Idiots: Hey, wait, why are the infection numbers going up?

The CDC: Because you didn't actually listen to what we said. Also, everyone should probably start wearing masks again because you're all fuck-ups.

Idiots: Waaah! The CDC are evil and stupid!

It also doesn't help when the US can't even get to 70% immunized to at least get something resembling herd immunity because stupids gotta stupid.

But hey, I'm sure everyone will happily take personal responsibility and the blame for not getting vaccinated once we end up with a resistant strain and we wind up going back into another year-long lockdown, though. Everyone will obviously treat it with seriousness and the respect that it deserves, and will in no way blame literally everyone other than the people who are actually responsible for being fuck-ups. Or demand for it to end early because they're tired of being cooped up or having to be inconvenienced in any way.

I do not expect Jim Steph to stay silent.

They've also pointed out in the past that they're constantly losing subscribers and views and it often feels like beating your head into the wall over and over and over again for no real gain.

It doesn't really matter how loudly one person is shouting if no one else is listening. Or only a few people are listening, and they're the people who already agree with the premise and don't need to be convinced.

A lot of the audience left there (especially the ones paying into Patreon) tend to be a bit radicalized.

how would that be enforceable though? I dont disagree Im just trying to imagine what it might look like.

We've managed to mass-vaccinate as a society before - it's the main reason why smallpox is no longer a thing (at least until someone uses one of the lab samples to recreate it as a biological weapon and dooms us all, or it escapes from a frozen corpse as climate change defrosts a glacier or two).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox#Eradication

The problem, whereas once upon a time, people were willing to accept that sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the good of society (and millions of people a year survived who otherwise would have died), now we're at a point where almost no one trusts our own governments or the UN (or science), and the Internet spreads misinformation far faster than actual fact. So people are much more willing to push back - especially when you're dealing with a virus that seemingly only kills "old people" and "people who already have problems", so it's much, much easier to just say "well, if I catch it I'll just ride it out" or "ehh, it's someone else's problem".

It doesn't help that there really isn't a clear or worthwhile effort coming from above - as much as people shat on Trump and his administration for not handling the problem effectively, it's not like Biden's done much better. Though it's also not clear that either of them could have done a much more significant push in a highly politicized environment where more than half the country is going to hate you no matter what you do.

I'd probably be more depressed if I wasn't already so cynical.

Things will never get any better while people are split down the middle like this.

The problem is, that split doesn't just apply to Covid - and it's never going away because neither side is really willing to understand or compromise with the other, and the Internet only exacerbates and radicalizes extreme positions. No one's ever really going to listen to or accept the other's position when everyone views everyone else who disagrees with them as "the enemy", and dismisses them out of hand.

The split is likely to continue getting much, much worse over the next few decades, not better.

People blamed Trump for causing the divide (and the hostility), but it was already growing long before that. The blowback of the last five years was more a symptom than a cause.

My parents did it when I was a kid.

Basically, as their finances improved, they wanted to move to a larger house. But they didn't want to move out of the neighborhood because most of their friends and close relatives lived right there. So they just moved like four streets over.

I could see an older couple who are done having kids downsizing for the opposite reason, saving money and making it less of a hassle to clean/maintain the house because it's smaller. I could also see older couples wanting to move out of a house with an upstairs to a one-story house so they don't need to constantly climb stairs if they have health issues. But they might not want to move out of the neighborhood, because they're happy enough there, know everyone there, or otherwise just don't want to go somewhere else.

Has there ever been a magic tank? Like a character/class/job that its main focus is a tank that uses mostly, if not all mage to tank for the party?

Not necessarily going to be able to answer for MMOs (because they're shit and I avoid them as much as possible), but...

Arguably, barrier mages in DA:I could be seen as magic tanks, because their main effect is to restore shields. And it would definitely be possible to build a tank magic user or even a "gish" (hybrid magic/melee class) in D&D.
