I was the reverse back when I went to Scout camp in the 80s. We had archery and shooting (with BB rifles), and I was never really good at archery at all (and thus didn't really enjoy it), but I was pretty good at shooting and enjoyed it way more.

Ironically, years later (in the 90s) I got much better at archery, by essentially doing it "wrong" (holding the bow sideways). But it never really became a thing I enjoyed more than shooting.

I haven't read anything new for a while. But I just reread An Edible History of Humanity and Prisoners of Geography, and reskimmed GURPS Alternate Earths 1 & 2.

Yeah I'm getting some like Mary Sue vibes from Aloy. She sees a recording of herself, next to a recording of who's most likely her mother, and an image of a DNA strand between them with a 99.5% match, making it extremely obvious to the player who the woman is, but also for some reason Aloy understands it even though she has no idea who this person is, has never seen them before, said nothing to indicate that she could be Aloy's mother, and Aloy presumably has no idea what DNA is and probably can't read English, but she looks at this for like 1 second and instantly understands it. Yeah okay.

To be fair if I saw a magical projection of someone who literally looks exactly like me, and I've spent my entire life wondering who my parents are, I'd probably start jumping to conclusions as well.

The real questions we should be asking is a) would Aloy even know what she looks like (has she ever seen a mirror, or a clear enough reflection in water or metal to accurately represent herself?), and b) how do they look identical in the first place when different life experiences should have led to variations (ie, Aloy breaks her nose and it'll heal with a slightly different shape, years of different nutritional intake probably leads to different height and body shape, years of intensive exercise should leave Aloy looking way more hench, etc)?

As for the "probably can't read English" part, that's a combination of "translation convention" and "Aloy has a magical computer that translates shit for her".

He's probably talking about those game systems people have been putting out for like 20+ years, where it has like 80 different older games in it because the people making them just straight up steal the software as if copyright didn't exist. The ones that are generally made by shady black market companies in China, and where they usually only manage to sell them for a few months before Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft/etc threaten to sue and they disappear (only for a new one to come out again a year or so later).

Which is presumably why I assume he was asking if it was okay to talk about, because it technically falls under "illegal activities" per the ToS.

No one gives a shit about Stanley Ipkiss. The first movie didn't succeed because of the character, it succeeded because of Jim Carrey. And they offered him the role in the sequel but he didn't want to do it.

Recast Stanley Ipkiss with pretty much anyone else and it fails. So you're right back where you started anyway.

And it's not like Stanley was even the main character of the comics. He was actually the villain of the first story arc and then died. So the idea of having different people wear the mask wasn't even a new idea for the sequel movie. It could have worked, if done correctly.

What really killed the second movie was a) Jamie Kennedy, and b) the stupid baby.

Write a better script, with a more sympathetic main character (and cast a better actor to play them), and have it focus more on their internal struggle more than just the slapstick sight gags, and people probably would have liked it. They could have even - oh, I don't know - just adapted one of the actual comic storylines. There were like six other stories they could have used, pretty much all of which were better than the original story they wrote for the sequel film.

I never renamed my new one. But my old one used to be "Master Control Program".

It could be, if their standards for "ok" are fairly low.

Some people will consider a movie okay if it's basically just two hours of pretty lights and loud sounds, that kind of makes you feel excited like a roller coaster while it's happening but which doesn't make you think in any way (and which actively hopes you don't think). Usually the kind of movie where "turn your brain off" is used as a positive. The kind of movie you think you remember kind of enjoying, but barely remember and never think about after a few days.

Other people loathe those sorts of movies, and react to them far more negatively.

It wouldn't be the first site on the Internet where I spent way more time than was healthy, only for it to close and never speak to any of those people ever again. And almost never think about until someone makes a topic like this and then I think back to the late 90s and early 2000s like they were a lifetime ago.

Only real difference with GameFAQs is that I've been here longer than anywhere else (which is disturbing when I actually stop and realize I've been here for 20 years). But that just means it'll take a bit longer to get out of the habit of absent-mindedly checking the site out of total inertia.

That happened with Cracked. Back when it was still good I checked it about once a day to see new articles. Then once it turned shit it took a while to try and break myself of the habit... I'd still kind of forget myself and check the site a couple times a week... then maybe a couple times a month... then it eventually got to the point where I just literally never think about it (again, except at times like this).

I'm not even sure I could remember all the sites I used to obsessively check multiple times a day for years that I haven't been to for years now. Message boards, online games, various services - there are a lot of sites I used to consider vital that I can barely remember now (and usually only recall when I find an old index card in my files with account/password info written down on it for a site and I'm like, "Oh yeah, that was a thing.").

Ironically, GameFAQs wasn't even my first site for video game hints and walkthroughs. I used to go to the GIA gaming site before that site closed. And these days I don't even really use the FAQs or game boards - I find way better info and discussion on YouTube, wikis, and Reddit. If not for PotD I'd probably have been gone long, long ago.

In theory I'm supposed to be a Devils fan, but back when I still cared about hockey (see other topic), I mostly rooted for the Islanders in the East.

In the other topic I mentioned my two Avs jerseys - I also have an Islanders jersey. It's from the era that everyone else seems to hate, but I've always liked best:

I just like the teal more than the usual New York blue (which might be spurred by the fact that I dislike most NY sports teams in general, so looking like the Mets, or having the same blue as the Rangers or the Giants, isn't really going to appeal to me much. Could be worse, though. Could be the design with the Gorton's Fisherman on it.

Avs were my team back when I still watched hockey. I'm actually looking at one of my two Avs jerseys right now (I've been cleaning out my closet to see what I want to keep and what I want to give to Goodwill).

Of course, the last time I gave a shit about hockey was 2004. The lock-out absolutely killed any interest I had, and by the time they finally came back I just didn't give enough of a shit to get back into it.

Considering someone else did all the actual hard work to build everything in the first place and he was mostly a glorified janitor, that's not really an argument in his favor.

Maintenance is easy. The hard part is actually adding to the existing code - which he almost never did, and when he bothered he'd usually fuck up three things by accident for every one thing he changed deliberately. And about 80% of the changes he made were either completely unnecessarily or mostly unwanted. Most of his changes came across like the most minor things he could occasionally change to justify keeping his job, like a cubicle worker who spends all their time goofing off but suddenly tries to look busy the moment the boss walks by.

If upper management had actually been paying attention and knew anything at all about running a site, he'd have been fired a decade ago.

But I don't watch on an account either. Which makes me wonder how long before they disable public viewing without an account entirely to further control usage. I could see them doing that in an attempt to lock down blockers ("If you get caught using one we'll ban your account!").

It wasn't even believable in 1990, considering the movie made nearly half a billion dollars profit. And regardless of how insane the marketing budget was in 1983, they weren't spending $400 million dollars on it (even the the most overhyped blockbusters NOW barely spend that much). And a lot of the marketing for RotJ was synergistic (ie, Burger King paying for the right to give away RotJ glasses with meals - the studio is making money off that deal, not losing it).

And that's just taking theaters into account. Once you start adding VHS and DVD sales into the mix, there's tons more money in the equation.

It's one of the huge dangers of taking points on the backend or a percentage of net profit in a movie contract - there's a good chance you're going to get screwed. Which is why most of the actors with clout will take a percentage of the gross instead.

I didn't say it was universally panned. I didn't say it was objectively bad. I have no personal opinion of the game because I haven't played it (or Botw either, for that matter). I also haven't played BGIII.

But from my perspective, without ever having sought out information or reviews on either game, I've heard tons of people crapping on TotK for being repetitive and lazy, and I'm not sure I've actually heard a single negative opinion of BGIII. TotK barely blipped on my radar when it came out, while I still see people talking about BGIII. Even when dipping into the GameFAQs game boards I saw tons of posts on the TotK board complaining about the game while most of the BGIII board posts were way more positive.

Just from my viewpoint, solely via pop culture osmosis, one of those games is dramatically more well-received than the other.

Like it or not, that's a factual statement - and literally nothing you say or do will actually alter that in any way.
