Once again we just have differing opinions. People thought Egyptian Pharos where God's. Doesn't make it so.

It's not really a question of opinion, though. If Marvel officially classifies something or someone as a god within the context of their own universe, then that person or thing is objectively a god regardless of whether or not you agree with them. For example, Thor is literally a god, full stop.

Thanos IS a grey area, because he wasn't a god at birth, though he was part of a race that had been considered gods by some in-universe. But he's also been a god multiple times in-universe without question.

mooreandrew58 posted...
My step father is a huge marvel geek and even he says thanks isn't a god. Dude owns like 1000+ marvel comics so I tend to take his word

I own nearly double that. And if you throw in digital comics that I've read but don't actually own, you could probably double that number again.

So by your own logic that would make him automatically wrong and me automatically and objectively correct on any subject on which we disagree.

Yeah. Outer Worlds looks fun, but I dunno man. Been burned before.

Absolutely.

The real problem I have with it is the deep-seated fear that it's being pushed as a spiritual successor to the original Fallout games (because it does have more of the original Fallout developers working on it than any of the Bethesda games ever have), but it might feel like TOO much of a throwback to those games, without the advances made in gaming since then.

It's the same problem I have with Pillars of Eternity. I really loved the Baldur's Gate games at the time they were released, but the exact same game with a less-interesting setting released 20 years later feels far more obsolete and nowhere near as worthwhile. I want something that takes the good things and expands on them, not something which desperately clings to ALL of the old out of an obsessive sense of misguided nostalgia.

We've only seen a short early preview of gameplay, but the dialogue it in felt a bit dry and clunky - and Obsidian's already said there's definitely no flirting/romance (because they've openly admitted they hate the idea of Bioware-style NPC relationships in the past). Which makes me worry about whether they'll actually manage to make me care about any of these characters or the story in any way.

If goofy zeerust weirdness is all they really have to sell themselves on, it's going to be a huge disappointment.

But I'm not dismissing it completely out of hand yet. I'm willing to see what they have to offer once we get closer to release. But my paranoia is strong.

WastelandCowboy posted...
Excited for Cyberpunk 2077, but I seriouusly doubt it'll come out in 2019.

It's possible. There've been at least a few hints that it might manage to squeak in before 2019 ends, though it could easily get pushed back to 2020 or even later.

I mostly only brought it up at all because it's the only other game I can even remotely think of that I know is in development that interests me in any way at all. For all that this year had multiple titles I found interesting, the next couple years are going to be pretty barren for me, I suspect.

So this boils down to we define god differently. To me he's from the universe(not another plane/dimension) and mortal so not a god.

That describes most of the actual gods of the Marvel universe, though. Whether Asgardians or characters like Hercules, who are explicitly gods in the comics (even if the movies shit on the idea of Asgardians being gods as opposed to aliens). Ironically, the actual transcendent beings who exist entirely beyond the physical (like Death and Eternity) usually AREN'T referred to as gods by anyone. They're basically "beyond" godhood.

Thanos is actually an Eternal. And Earth's Eternals have repeatedly been referred to as gods or mistaken for them (the most common being Zuras, Thena, and Makkari - who are usually conflated with Zeus, Athena, and Hermes/Mercury, respectively). They even live on Mount Olympus. Even the ones who aren't usually considered gods still inspire tons of mortal legends (like Sersi, Gilgamesh, and Ikaris).

Thanos' brother is Eros (aka, the Greek God of Desire). And Thanos himself is specifically named to evoke Thanatos, the Greek God of Death.

Either way you clearly didn't pay attention. Hell I don't even read marvel comics and i know for a fact death is another character entirely. In the movie he's the last of a alien race.

The literal incarnation of death (ie, Death) is another character, but there are multiple gods of death in the comics. So that wouldn't prevent Thanos from being one of them (and some cultures in the setting certainly tend to consider him one).

Though if we're going by the comics, Thanos doesn't actually care about the universe at all, and certainly isn't purging it to preserve it. He's just killing people because he is literally in love with Death, who appears to him as a hot chick in purple robes. She's kind of an aloof bitch, though, and doesn't seem to love him back, so he keeps doing crazier and crazier things to try and win her over. Most of which never work.

Also, in the comics, while Thanos IS from Titan, Titan is literally just the moon of Saturn, not an entirely different planet in a different solar system. And he isn't the last survivor of Titan, Titan's actually doing fairly well for itself. He's just an exile from there because they consider him a terrorist, and he killed his mother. His father and brother are still around, though, and have worked with the Avengers in the past (his brother actually WAS an Avenger for a while).

Movie Thanos is basically a well-intentioned extremist because they wanted you to be able to sympathize with his motives if not his methods, because Marvel isn't fond of doing purely one-dimensional villains. "Guy who wants to have sex with death" probably wasn't going to work in the universe they've established.

But either way, the moment he has the Gauntlet, in either universe, he basically IS God.

(And the Gauntlet isn't even the only time he's basically been God in the comic universe - he's had the Cosmic Cube at least once, and that basically lets you rewrite reality however you want on a whim like a genie with unlimited wishes. And at least once he basically inherited the powers of the literal ultimate over-god of the setting and only gave them up because he had to in order to basically fix the universe and save it - otherwise he'd basically be god of nothing, ruling over a broken ruin.)

I mean, as heartless as the "snap" was.......there is no doubt that there would be CONSIDERABLE benefits to it.

Almost nothing that would actually matter in the short term. Things like reduced emissions leading to less stress on the climate change wouldn't be detectable to anyone other than scientists for decades. Reduced demand for resources wouldn't necessarily be noticeable, because resources would actually grow more scarce to the individual's perspective as the means of distribution fail. You would have situations like in the USSR near the end of the Cold War, where people wait all day on bread lines, while entire massive crops of wheat rot in fields because they can't be harvested or transported properly. Pollution wouldn't clear up overnight - it would improve over time by fractions of degrees, so it would be quite some time before it was noticeable to the naked eye even in the most overcrowded of cities.

Reduced population would be noticeable, and some of the more misanthropic or callous people might be glad that their commute to work is so much less packed now, except for the fact that there's a good chance the subway isn't running any more, and they may not have a job any more, and also their beloved pet disappeared (because the snap didn't just kill humans).

And again, most people probably won't be thinking "Man, now there's a much brighter future for my kids!" when there's at least a 50% chance your kids don't exist any more. Or your significant other doesn't. Or plenty of other people don't, and now you're armed and defending your house with guns because your one neighbor is now looting the houses of everyone who disappeared to stockpile resources for the coming hard times, while there's a cult forming down the street that believes the Rapture has come and those left must now prove themselves worthy of God's love, so they're planning to burn all the non-believers to death.

NO ONE is looking at this as a positive. The normal human response would either be panic or rage.

In a comic book universe, the most likely future scenario is that humans radically devote all of our resources to developing space flight and doomsday weapons and then flood across the galaxy like a plague constantly searching for whoever was responsible so we can vengeance-fuck their entire race into extinction. Along with anyone else who gets in our way.

GreenKnight127 posted...
The planet would be letting out a big sigh of relief.

At least until the general confusion, chaos, and collapse of society eventually leads to incredibly unqualified people getting their hands on nuclear launch codes and firing off a few due to the destabilized political situation and general level of terror.

Humans are at their most destructive when they're panicked. The desperation caused by the snap will likely lead people to become extremely quick to resort to violence to solve most problems. Worse, even once things stabilize (IF they do), knowledge of the new availability of excess resources would likely make us even more proliferate in wasting them than we already are, countering most of the potential benefits almost immediately.

And, of course, then we breed like crazy so in about 2-3 generations from now we're right back to the same population we were at before the catastrophe (it only took us about 40 years to double global population over the last few decades), only now we have reduced animal populations, so in some ways we're WORSE off than we were before.

For anyone who spends time actually thinking about the consequences, there is NOTHING positive about the snap.

I actually really hope in Endgame they have the balls to show some scenes where people around the world are actually kinda impressed and thankful for what Thanos did. Or at least acknowledging the up-side to some degree.

If they did it would make absolutely zero sense, because there are about a dozen people on Earth max who actually know what happened and why, and none of them are likely to tell everyone else. No one is going to be praising Thanos specifically.

And to the average person, the "decimation" is absolutely terrifying and horrific. Not only did most people lose at least one person who was extremely close to them (so person tragedy is a thing for pretty much everyone), but you're also dealing with the absolute terror of not knowing WHY or HOW it happened, and thus living in constant fear that it might happen again.

What if another few hundred million people vanish tomorrow? Will you be one of them? If your family survived the last time around, will they go next time?

Plus...

GreenKnight127 posted...
Maybe TVs in the background with a journalist talking about how there are no more food shortages around the world. How traffic has dramatically decreased. People in Hong Kong can see the stars in the sky at night for the first time in 100 years. War and conflict dramatically decreased. Pollution at an all time low. Trees growing in places where trees never grew.

Newscasters would probably be far more inclined to talk about how nearly every aspect of the world's infrastructure is at the edge of collapse and all of human civilization is on the brink of total ruin.

Imagine everything that needs to happen to keep the modern industrialized world running. Now imagine all of the people whose job it is to accomplish those tasks are simply gone. You may not even have newscasts, because half the people running the TV station are gone. Worse, since the decimation didn't guarantee that only the superfluous half of the population are gone, you might have scenarios where literally everyone who can work a transmitter are part of the missing 50%.

It's worse than that, though. Westerners don't realize just how many delicate systems need to continue working to keep us all alive, and how utterly fucked we all are if those systems fail. General power outages are almost a certainty. Transport of vital goods likely fails, causing food and fuel shortages. Medical treatment becomes more difficult. General infrastructure support and repair likely fails. Law enforcement suffers from disorganization and lack of manpower, while riots flourish.

And because the effect is universal, there is no outside force to send aid to help those in need, because everyone is in need.

Thanos made 50% of the population disappear, but a hell of a lot more than that would die shortly thereafter. At best, you're looking at a martial law scenario where it takes months (or years) to recover. At worst, you're looking at a Mad Max future where most technological nations revert back to tribal barbarism. Think Walking Dead, just without the zombies.

The Outer Worlds is an interesting concept, but I've only got wary optimism at best for it, based on what I've seen and heard. I might get more excited for it as it gets closer or after it's released, but for now... hmm. And Wolfenstein: Youngblood is something I'm paying attention to, but I wouldn't describe it as "anticipated" at this point.

The only other game with a future release I care about at all is Cyberpunk 2077. Pretty much every other confirmed game for 2019 that I'm aware of either doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, or is something I assume is going to be outright terrible and I'm actively hoping for it to fail (like Anthem).

Depends.

Does outing the secret and destroying their reputation actually accomplish anything of value, or are you doing it solely out of a petty need for revenge against someone who may not even be still alive to care (if you're doing it years later)?

Does preserving the illusion of their worth somehow inspire others to be better people or accomplish worthwhile things, or is it a mostly a neutral-value reputation that doesn't mean much beyond serving as that person's legacy?

Supposedly the two who did the collab with AH are going to start their own channel together, because they're still cool with each other. They just didn't feel comfortable continuing the old brand all things considered.

There's at least some rumor passing around implying that might be part of why they did the collab with AH in the first place - they might be angling to start an independent channel but attach it to the Let's Play network (the same way Cow Chop, Game Attack, and Kinda Funny are), or start their new venture fully under the Rooster Teeth umbrella from the beginning (the way AH, Funhaus, and Sugar Pine 7 are). So since they would have had to come in to talk to Geoff (and potentially Matt Hullum farther up the chain), they might have just filmed a few videos with them to get some content out of it.

Imagine being someone that kink shames others lmao.

It's easy to imagine that, since it describes of 99.99999999999% all the humans who've ever lived.

"Don't kink shame" is very much a modern concept, and almost entirely exists because of how powerfully the Internet has desensitized us to sexual material in general. But even that mentality still mostly only applies to people online talking in a relatively anonymous environment.

In the real world, it's still pretty taboo to just blurt out in front of your friends or coworkers or random strangers on the train that you love masturbating to people dressed in animal costumes, or licking women's armpits, or videos of women dressed as nuns getting fisted by midgets. And most people are absolutely going to shit on you for being a weirdo. And god help you if you happen to let it slip that your kink borders on pedophilia (even if it's just hentai or older women dressing up like and acting like little girls) - that sort of thing gets you put on lists.

Regardless of how a generation of children raised on the Internet might believe otherwise, the entire idea of society as a whole enforcing shared morality and norms on everyone (and using guilt, shame, ostracism, or outright emotional, mental, or even physical abuse to enforce it) exists for a reason, and it's hard-wired deep into human behavioral instincts. It's basically how we've socialized children into society for thousands of years, and how we tend to maintain society as a whole. WHAT is being demonized or shamed may change, but the methods for doing so almost never do.

The nail that stands up tends to get hammered down, but if you hammer that nail through your penis people are going to think you're a freak.

Because that makes perfect sense.

Generally speaking, the test is supposed to be whether or not you know the rules of the road and drive without running down pedestrians or hitting trees, not whether or not you can properly work a clutch or shift gears. Taking the test in a manual trans car does add a level of unnecessary difficulty.

Once you pass in an automatic, they don't really care whether or not you know what you're doing when it comes to manual transmission, because if you fuck that up it's mostly only your own car that's going to suffer for it, which makes it your own problem.

Granted, one could argue that having to deal with manual trans after the fact creates an extra layer of distraction that could cause accidents in general that might harm other people, but the same could be said of things like radios and hands-free phones, and we still haven't banned those yet - or added them to the driving test.

In the Tremors topic that is currently floating around on the board somewhere, I referenced an old movie from the way back dim and misty, and went to Youtube to look for a trailer to post. Imagine my absolute surprise when I found the entire movie on Youtube:

I feel like I should demand that everyone in this topic watch the movie as homework, then be ready to come back and take a quiz on it. The trailer makes it look a bit cheesier than it actually is, but it's been one of my favorite movies ever for years now (and I hate the fact that they never released it on DVD, only VHS... of which I have two copies). I love the writing, I love nearly every performance (and it helps that nearly every major actor in it is someone I also like from other things), and I love the concept of the setting (which very likely somewhat inspired my later love for Mage: the Ascension as an RPG).

(Of course now I've talked it up, so it will never live up to the hype, you'll all dismiss it, and then I'll be forced to hunt and kill you all.)

Nice. This is actually one series that went ultra-cheesy that I will actually still watch. Too bad they can't get Bacon or Ward back in the series. Or Reba.

I always feel kind of sad that Fred Ward wasn't more successful than he was - I pretty much love his performance in every movie I've ever seen him in.

And he's the star of what is basically one of my favorite movies ever (that like three people on Earth remember ever existed):

No one cares about how many times you take your test. And honestly, stressing over it just increases the odds you're going to panic and fail it anyway.

Just chill and relax. Personally I didn't even bother taking my test at all until like six months after I was eligible, and no one gave me shit for me. A couple of people failed, and no one gave them shit for it.

As much as Hollywood has been telling people for years that owning and being able to drive your own car is the ultimate teenage milestone aside from losing your virginity, it's not as huge a deal as it's made out to be.

Bumblebee A Transformers Story looks really good.

From everything I've heard from anyone who's seen it, it's apparently the best live-action Transformers movie by far. Probably related to the fact that it's the first one Michael Bay isn't directing. And because it's a prequel, it can ignore most of the stupider elements from the other movies.

He's basically been the main star of all the later ones.

I knew they made at least a couple with him, but I was kind of surprised to see they made #6 recently, because I saw it on TV while flipping through the guide.

Zero isn't an option since by all accounts, mathematically and otherwise, it includes all possibilities including those seemingly impossible.

Except impossibility, by definition, only includes things which literally cannot occur, because the moment they CAN occur, they are no longer impossible, merely improbable.

So zero would be the only possible valid answer for your poll.

The interior would be a mix of fantasy and scifi, because I like stone corridors and fully furnished dungeons but I like fancy indoor plumbing, comfortable accommodations, and high-tech electronics/appliances.

An old pretentious artist friend of mine I stopped talking to years ago painted his room when he was a kid with some sort of gravel-y paint that looked like stone, so the walls looked like castle walls. And he had lamp sconces that looked like torches. It was actually kind of cool.

TopicPSA: There is a difference between 'no taste' and 'bad taste'

"No taste" means that the person is incapable of discerning good quality from bad, and thus their views are effectively random. "Bad taste" means that a person considers bad quality good and good quality bad.

There is an argument to be made that the moment you use the word "taste" at all, you are effectively attempting to quantify something that is 100% subjective and without any inherent quality of any kind, thus rendering your entire argument completely invalid and worthless.

Context generally matters, though. There is a MASSIVE world of difference between someone saying "This movie is good" and "I enjoyed this movie".

(Incidentally, situations like that are a large part of why the concept of E-Prime exists.)

disruptive posting violation according to this one mod.

Considering it has been for more than a decade, that one mod is absolutely correct.

They usually only drop the hammer on it if it's clear that you're deliberately boosting every topic by a specific user, or if you're bumping a lot of fad topics. And they're definitely more inclined to take you down if you bump it just by posting something no-content like "bump" as opposed to actually responding to topics with more in-depth replies.

But it's always been considered disruptive.

I'd choose breaking up, because I don't want anyone I'm in a relationship dating or fucking anyone else.

Unless by "dating" you just mean hanging out with someone who is a non-romantic friend, but that's not really dating, per se.

Here's a question that occurred to me yesterday:

If you could create a new home, based on an existing fantasy/sci-fi/etc style, with money being no object, what would you choose to be the template?

Keep in mind, I'm talking physical appearance only, so if you choose the Enterprise from Next Generation you don't get to zip from planet to planet in a starship, nor do you get holodecks, replicator tech, or any of the other goodies. If you pick Rivendell from LotR you don't get magic or elves, and if you pick the Death Star from Star Wars you don't get to blow up planets.

We're just talking the aesthetic look of classic geek-related sets and locations from across all media. Which look really sums up what you would consider an ideal sort of place to live, if you had total freedom of design and construction?

Also, I'm from even farther in the future than either of them, and I'm going to tell you that it doesn't really matter because the Thousand Year Space War starts shortly afterward, and there's no time to worry about movies or video games when the Blood Knights show up and start scorching the planet.

it isn't

It's the largest settlement in the game. Starlight's about the only place that comes close, and most of that never gets used by anyone anyway. Sanctuary starts out overdeveloped and probably gets worse if you actually spend any time building anything.

Little shit was in sanctuary the whole fucking time!

That's why I mentioned Sanctuary in my post. I knew there were at least 2-3 different doghouses there in odd parts of the map, and it's the largest area in the game, so it's really hard to find people there if you don't know where they are. With Dogmeat, you can at least delete all the doghouses but one and then move it somewhere specific, so you always know where to look for him.

What's worse though is when you're looking for a specific NPC in Sanctuary, but because of the very specific way in which you built structures, and the very unyielding AI path the game gives certain NPCs, they wind up bouncing up to unreachable areas on the roofs of buildings. I think I spent an hour looking for Preston once only to realize he was actually stuck BEHIND a wall and totally unreachable until I went into the editor and moved the wall out of the way.

Sensual_T_Rex posted...
Well at least you've got him back. I love Dogmeat, he's the best companion in the game.

I think Fallout 4 was the first Bethesda game with companions where I actually took the companions with me.

They're usually so shit in games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim that I'd rather just go alone than constantly having some asshole leap in front of me while I'm shooting or meleeing with my giant flaming sword or completely ruining all presence of sneaking. Even their only real purpose (acting as a mule for all the garbage I'm carrying that's pushed me over encumbrance limits) isn't enough to motivate me to want to bring them.

It wasn't too bad in Fallout 4, though. And if I remember there was no auto-killing sidekick NPCs bullshit (which was another reason I never took anyone in other games).

I mostly just traveled with Piper in Fallout 4, though. Mainly because I was trying to get into her pants.

There are no Roman documents of Jesus. The only actual "evidence" of Jesus ever being a real person is the Bible, and you cannot use Source A to prove that Source A is true.

Most people who cite Roman history are pointing to the fact that the Bible seems to accurately represent the political situation in Judea at the time, and Pilate WAS a real documented person.

Granted, that doesn't mean much since Captain America has stories where he meets Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Barack Obama, and that doesn't make Cap a real person.
