Haven't people been gone after before for LARPing/cosplaying Drow or shadows before too?

The D&D community is burning their entire house down right now, actually. Orcs and Drow are racist, therefore WotC is going to rework the game to eliminate race-based advantages and disadvantages entirely because implying there are biological differences between fantasy species isn't woke enough.

Not that the industry as a whole hasn't been going this way for a while - a lot of major game developers have been leaning into increased inclusivity and sensitivity (which is good) for at least the last five years or so, but they've been doing it in a way where they use a lot of SJW buzzwords (which is bad) and which tends to be somewhat of a thoughtcrime doubleplus ungood mentality (which is very bad... and somewhat ironic).

But that's what happens when you hire up all the unemployed liberal arts majors to write your material.

I suppose it's also worth mentioning that when you have a massive cast of young talent on a show giving them national exposure, it shouldn't be terribly surprising when a portion of them become stars.

It's also a case of, when you have extremely talented kids who are desperate (or their parents pushing them) to be stars, they're always going to find some way to try and achieve that. A lot of the kids applying to be on Mickey Mouse Club in the first place were always going to be people who, even if they didn't get on the show, would likely have found other ways to get into the spotlight.

Case in point - Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys originally auditioned for MMC and got accepted to be on the show before he wound up going with Backstreet instead. He already had multiple rods in the fire, as it were, and just went with the one most likely to pay off.

The ones you'd probably be expected to recognize (even if only by name and context) are Justin, Keri, JC, Britney, Christina, and Ryan... aka, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell (Felicity, The Americans, lots of movies), JC Chasez (from NSYNC), Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling.

Nikki and Marc are borderline cases - Nikki DeLoach was in a girl group (with Britney Spears, before Britney went solo), then became an actress (she's mostly been in low-tier stuff, with cameos in shows like CSI and more major roles in a bunch of Hallmark Channel movies), while Marc Worden did a few minor TV and movie roles but then moved into voice acting and did a fair bit of stuff (though most of his work falls under the heading of "Additional Voices").

No real clue what happened to most of the others, though some of them went into songwriting, and have that sort of "You don't know them, but there's a chance you've heard their work and don't know it" sort of cred going on. And I think the one girl is currently touring with En Vogue.

No, I'm acting like -I- would have to try to know stuff.

At no point have I really generalized anything I've said to anyone else other than me, or shat on other people for bothering to keep track of people they used to know, by whatever means, for whatever reason. I'm just pointing out why -I- haven't.

About the most I did was kind of poo-poo the mentality that everyone needs to have a Facebook page and that everyone with a Facebook page has to be Facebook friends with everyone they ever went to school with, because there are absolutely people who think that way. But not everyone thinks that way, so there will always be people who actually have to actively investigate what happened to people they went to school with.

This is arguably a problem with Internet discourse in general, though - people read more into what someone is saying than what they're ACTUALLY saying, personalize it, then treat it as something of an attack and react aggressively to something that was never actually directed at them in the first place. Then the first person reacts to what they perceive as an attack, and then everyone winds up on the defensive and just kind of insulting each other. Which is why most Internet discussions and debates usually devolve into little more than shit-flinging pretty quickly.

That's because context matters. People may oversimplify or conflate terminology and confuse the discussion in the process, but "cyberstalking" (at least when it's not being used in a legalistic sense) has always generally meant little more than going out of your way to use the Internet tools at your disposal to track down people you would otherwise not be aware of.

At its most basic level, that includes stuff like tracking down Facebook profiles to see where someone is and what their personal details are (married, kids, etc), but it also goes into things like name searches that give you addresses, phone numbers, e-mail accounts, etc. Even if you never USE that information to contact or harass them (which is where the legal definition of the term comes into play), you're still effectively stalking them (even if they never find out, and you never doing anything with it other than sate your own curiosity).

Bumping into someone, or hearing gossip about them because you live in the same small town, or seeing what they're up to because you share Facebook friends, or other passive means of learning what they're up to really isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking more about the impulse where you find yourself curious about someone you haven't really thought about for years, and then actively choose to go looking for information.

Considering most YouTubers are 100% in the right when they're complaining because YouTube as a whole is a massive dumpster fire, your comparison just makes me assume that Twitch is also fucking up left, right, and center, not that the streamers are the problem.

Personally, I assumed we were probably see more Twitch fuckery going on soon as the news came out that Mixer crashed and burned, because it left Twitch in a position of greater power in regards to the users ("Well, where else are you going to go? Ha ha, fuckers!"). Stories like this coming out now just sort of underline that for me.

If they wouldn't touch him because he was making money, pulling viewers, and they didn't want to risk losing him to a rival platform (and helping legitimize that competition and potentially screwing Twitch over), but the moment they feel confident that competition is no longer a threat they're willing to whip their dick out and start swinging it around, it shows pretty clearly that the whole thing is just a scummy business move rather than anything motivated by actual decency, ethics, or morals.

I suspect they'll cut a lot more borderline cases soon, and we'll see them close ranks once again the next time someone tries to push an alternative streaming platform.

If anything, that's the real problem behind that mentality. It's not the people they actually manage to get fired/ostracized, it's the people they terrify into silence or conformity by virtue of constant harassment to the point of bordering on terrorism.

Not everyone feels the need to have a Facebook page and obsessively keep track of all the people they went to high school with for the rest of their lives. Some of us just move on.

It also doesn't help that I didn't really HAVE "a" high school crush as much as I had about a half-dozen minor high school crushes, so it's not like I was ever all that super-obsessed over one single girl anyway. But I never bothered keeping track of any of them after we graduated, and I've been in a relationship with the same girl for more than 20 years at this point, so I really don't have those whimsical "Whatever happened to so-and-so?" moments where I'd feel the need to care.

I assume most/all of them went to college (or didn't), eventually met someone they liked, maybe got married (or didn't), maybe had kids (or didn't), and are either happy, sad, or dead right now.

It kind of does, though. There are YouTubers from like a decade ago who just up and vanished at the height of their popularity who people STILL bring up in a "what ever happened to...?" sort of context.

If you openly say "Hey guys, I'm deliberately stepping away from YouTube because of X, Y, and Z", it keeps people spending the next few years trying to figure out if you died of some illness or got murdered or were kidnapped and brainwashed by some sort of cult.

Ironically, depending on your ego and what you want out of the situation, walking away without a goodbye might actually be the more valuable option, because it will help perpetuate your reputation even after you're gone. While an actual goodbye is more what you'd expect from actual human beings who may genuinely care about their audience and the people in it and give them something resembling closure instead of just severing all ties like a bit of a sociopath.

Harassment's on the upswing in general, and the entire YouTube economy is a massive dumpster fire. People who managed to turn it into successful careers in the past are finding it harder and harder to generate revenue every day.

When you reach the point where you're working twice as hard to make half as much money, you probably start to think about giving up on the whole thing. And if you're already sitting on a giant pile of "fuck you money", it's a lot easier to get out now when you're still relatively on top and can exploit what's left of your entertainment cred into other projects outside the Internet than sticking around until you've used up most of the good will and prior attention and are just a has-been looking for loose change.

Now's probably a perfect time for someone like her to get out. If anything, I'd absolutely say it's a case of this:

Based solely on what we know right now, probably the PS5. Unless Sony announces something in the next year or two that is a massive clusterfuck of bullshittery or Microsoft pulls a minor miracle out of their ass (in other words, the exact reverse of what happened last time), I don't really see a need to switch this time around.

Nintendo's been out of this race since 1996, as they haven't managed to do a single thing worth buying a console for in my eyes since the SNES.

From what I've heard, the implication seems to be that there's actually going to be strong PS4 backwards compatibility, but I've also heard some people talking (maybe just being wishful) about limited PS1 or PS2 compatibility.
