die hard could have just as easily been a normal office party on a friday night or something

Yeah, but then you lose the entire subtext that he's estranged from his ex-wife, and that he doesn't really interact with her or the family much, and that she's extending an olive branch to him because "it's the holidays". You also lose some of the subtext of why he's so nervous (hence the whole subplot where he loses his shoes and is barefoot the whole movie, which Hans then exploits later).

There's actually a lot of Christmas elements in the movie. They don't need to be there, no, but they're still there. And saying you can take them out and still have a movie is true of most Christmas movies as well, so it's not really a valid argument (A Christmas Carol doesn't have to be about Christmas, it could just be about any old miser being misery at any point during the year, etc).

Pretty impressive for a movie that came out in July.

Because there's no such thing as theaters that show movies at times other than official first release.

I mean, I saw Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back in a movie theater in 1983. And I used to have a theater near me that would show movies months later but for like 1/4th the price.

And there's a theater near me that recently showed Godfather I and II one after the other. And I think they did a Back to the Future night with all three movies as well.

And I know one theater near me that shows Rocky Horror Picture Show every Halloween.

I wasn't bothered by it or anything (I'm agnostic, he certainly wasn't going to offend me). But it got irritating as fuck when some of the more annoying angstheists would parrot back stuff he said like it was a magical charm that would set religious people on fire.

Like I said, though, that seems like it's a phase that has kind of passed. Or maybe I've just stopped paying attention to most of the more annoying people online.

ParanoidObsessive

My truck has room enough to seat 6. Front and back bench seats can hold driver and passenger comfortably up front (with space in the middle to squeeze an extra person in slightly less comfortably), with three in the back (and minimal middle hump so it's not a problem for footroom).

It's actually better than my car - that only has bucket seats up front and a bench seat in back, for 5 seats (but the middle back seat is basically a write-off because it's on the center hump, so it's terrible for anyone other than small children).

My old truck could seat 4, sort of - it had driver and passenger bucket seats and two jumper seats behind them that could fold down out of the side. So if you wanted to squeeze kids or small people in (or just didn't care how uncomfortable larger people are going to be), you could - though the jumper seats sit sideways, so that might be an issue for injury if there was an accident.

Almost any older comedian you ask will tell you that either Carlin or Richard Pryor are the funniest comics ever.

I don't know if I'd agree, but I definitely prefer Carlin over Dangerfield. I was never really a huge fan of Dangerfield, whereas Carlin was incredible, especially during his middle period (when he was less hippie than he was in his early routines, but not quite as bitter as he'd get in his later work).

The only downside with Carlin was when stupid people would quote everything he said like the holy writ of a philosopher (especially the political stuff), but that phase seems mostly over at this point (probably because a lot of the younger idiots on the Internet barely know who he is anymore). So I can go back to loving his bits about language and social mores.

The argument in the OP is that a Holiday is any day where everything shuts down. In the US that's only 2 actual days - Thanksgiving and Christmas (I can't remember if things shut down for the 4th of July)

Depending on how you define "everything shuts down", those two days don't count either.

And if all you mean is "official/government business shuts down", there are more than just those two days in the US.

I've probably spend tens of thousands of dollars on Amazon over the last decade or so, both on new products directly from Amazon as well as used stuff from individual sellers, and I've never once had a problem with the service.

Any time someone has sent the wrong product, or not sent a product at all, or otherwise messed up an order, I file a complaint and it's almost immediately corrected or addressed in some way (either the right product gets shipped or I get a refund).

Amazon seems extremely good with customer service across the board.

There's other stuff here and there - I played Apple IIe games a ton as a young kid because my cousin had one, when I was older I used to play Sega Genesis with my one friend, in high school I played a lot of PC stuff, and then in college my one roommate had a Sega Saturn (we actually had a Saturn, an NES, SNES, and PS1 all hooked up at the same time, to three different TVs, all on one entertainment center in our living room - and there were times when people were gaming on all of them at once).

I've occasionally played things on other consoles as well (N64, Dreamcast, GameCube), but that was less common.

And if we'll recall, this is exactly the thing I pointed out from the get-go with TFA, and how it's slavish adherence to safe mediocrity would virtually guarantee the whole trilogy being tainted and doomed to fail.

And I disagreed at the time - and I still disagree now.

Nothing about VII makes failure inevitable. There are plenty of ways it could have gone that would have worked quite effectively. Fuck, give me a weekend and I could probably write a better spec script for Episode VIII and IX than what we got. This isn't rocket science.

The real problem was a lack of unifying vision. Allowing three different directors (even if one of them eventually backed out) to shoot three different barely connected movies written by three different people, and without a central authority directing traffic in any way, and with no attempt to rein in excessive deconstruction.

There are definitely elements of VII that made following up harder than it might otherwise have been (though ironically, they're not necessarily the parts aping New Hope the most). But there were multiple ways they could have built on that foundation, before Rian Johnson deliberately severed every single thread and then kicked over whatever was left before setting it on fire.

Last Jedi is the real poisoned well in this particular equation, not Force Awakens.

I don't understand anyone who says it's got 1-3 good games. You must be incredibly picky.

If you ignore any games that are available on other systems, and just stick to exclusives (which are mostly first-party Nintendo games), it has an extremely weak library. If you dislike the mobile aspect of it, it can leave you with absolutely no reason to ever want the system.

Conversely, if you love the mobile aspect, then the availability of non-exclusive titles on a portable system may be a huge plus, and thus it will seem to have a much stronger library to you.

As an example, for someone who dislikes the idea of the Switch, Skyrim being on it really isn't going to be a selling point. But for someone who likes playing on the go, they may love the fact that Skyrim is on the Switch, and count it as part of a strong collection of games.

Ultimately, like most things, it depends on what you're looking for in gaming. Personally, if someone gave me a Switch for free, I'd probably give it away to someone else or sell it. There's pretty much zero there to make me want it. But I can also understand why other people might love it.

The phrase balance isn't really supposed to be taken literally. The force isn't a set of scales. It just means that things are in their natural healthy state.

That only works if you consider the Dark Side to be unnatural.

But the thing is, you can't have life without death. Decay exists to recycle things into new forms. The brightest lights cast the darkest shadow, and conversely, light is meaningless without shadow to define it.

It's way more interesting to see the Dark Side as a natural (if terrible) aspect of the Force in itself, which has to exist in order for the Light Side to exist. Two sides of the same coin, each having a purpose, each being necessary. With the only problem being when one or the other of the two falls out of balance, growing too strong and potentially overpowering the other.

It also makes what happened in the prequels almost clever - the Jedi wind up getting blindsided because they mistakenly assumed the prophecy meant one thing, when it actually meant another. Too many Jedi (without an equal number of Sith to counterbalance them) had unbalanced the Force, so something had to come along to reset the scales. Cue the new balance - two Jedi in hiding, two Sith ruling.

Of course, something clever and interesting has no place in the prequels, so of course Lucas poo-pooed the idea. And then talked about how he wanted to double down on midichlorians if he'd done the sequels himself.

And it wasn't good, either, precisely for just being a retread. But at least it more or less functions as a movie, in comparison to the other 2.

I said at the time it would work well as a base to build on, and to redeem the bad taste the prequels left in people's mouths, if it led into the next two movies and helped set up an effective trilogy. So my ultimate opinion of VII was going to depend entirely on what they did with VIII and IX.

Considering how the following movies did absolutely nothing worthwhile with any of it, it sort of makes TFA much, much worse in retrospect. Because it wasn't nostalgia to set up a new beginning, it was hollow nostalgia with absolutely no substance, no direction, and no point. It wasn't world-building, it was masturbation.

The Mayan calendar "ending" doesn't really mean much more than the fact that MY calendar "ends" every December 31.

And even if it DID mean what everyone said it meant, and that the world would literally end when the calendar did, it wouldn't matter because there's at least some evidence to suggest that the New Agers did the math wrong, and the last long count didn't end in 2012 anyway.

If they assume this is a slam dunk (which they may, because it's a mistake they've made before, and they never seem to learn from it), and that they can run pretty much anyone and win, they may fuck themselves over hard.

At least a few of the candidates currently in the running have very little chance of beating him, no matter how badly people may think he's going to lose. Dems need to be smart and field a candidate that won't alienate half the country.

There are certainly options that make a win for them likely. Whether or not they're competent enough to make that choice is in question. We'll see.

I don't quite remember, but can you even get to that pit without the game itself straight up telling you the fall will kill you unless you get at least one of the gods to help you?

I seem to recall that yes, you can say "Ehh, screw the gods" and just jump in, but the game kind of makes it very clear that it's a stupid idea. It's not something you can just stumble over before you know what it is.

On average. In practice, some places everyone is a half-sibling, some places blood don't mix at all.

No. Literally. As in literally literally, not figuratively literally.

On every single human being alive today's family tree, if you go back far enough, you will hit someone who is in every single tree. By the technical definition of the word, we are all cousins. The only relationship you will ever have with another human who is NOT your cousin is if they're even closer in degree (parents, siblings, children, etc).

And I'm not talking Biblical stories here, I'm talking legitimate science. Look up Y-Chromosome Adam and Mitochondrial Eve. Every human alive is related to every other human.

And they just put it in to pander to SJWs who hate every movie that doesn't have LGBTQIAN+ shit.

That's not really a defense. If anything, it's stronger support for being annoyed by it.
