I'll play devil's advocate in this regard - while Prime 4 is absolutely in development hell and I understand that people want it sooner rather than later, I still think it's fantastic that between the game being announced and getting released, we got the next chronological installment in the Metroid series.

It really can't be overstated what a massive fucking pile of shit Putin is.

When Russia was invading Ukraine, there wasn't much else of a choice but to root for Ukraine to wipe out as many Russians as possible to defend their homeland. It was an invasion. It was an illegal occupation of Ukraine for the sake of vanity, and it was pointless and cruel. It led to thousands of needless civilian deaths for the sake of Russian vanity. At that point, the only thing you could do was hope that the Ukrainians had the resources they needed to wipe out as many invaders as they could to stop their home from being forcibly seized.

But the fact is that Russia sent waves of men into Ukraine to enforce the will of the country, to die pointlessly so that Putin and the Kremlin could boast about recapturing a former territory and being a stronger military superpower for it. And as you can read in this letter, soldiers being sent in understood the folly of what was happening, and at a certain point they understood they were going to die a pointless death.

Invading Ukraine was already a petty, evil act on Putin's part. You can be a smug fuckface and go "well actually there was tactical planning behind the invasion of Ukraine", but it was still petty and evil above all else. But Putin betrayed every Russian citizen he sent into Ukraine. The ones who lived became war criminals, and the ones who died died for nothing.

I truly hope the rest of Putin's life is full of pain and suffering. And for the record, this is why a world without war is the only way to honour a soldier - because regardless of who wins and who loses, every soldier loses in war. The best way to honour the sacrifices of those who died is to make it impossible to send their children in to die like they did. The world would be a better place without warmongering pieces of shit like George Bush, Dick Cheney, Henry Kissinger and Vladimir Putin

So I checked out my predictions in the "what are your Direct wishes" thread, and I realised I got everything I fucking asked for.

"BotW2 news, hopefully an update on the Life is Strange/Before the Storm remasters, and - total pie in the sky prediction - a Dark Cloud remaster. Or any PS2-era JRPG, to be totally honest."

Tears of the Kingdom. LiS/BtS are getting released at the end of September. Both Tales of Synphona and Romancing SaGa (and Front Mission 3 I guess?) are getting remastered. No Dark Cloud, but PS2 JRPG remasters? For days, son.

...to the surprise of no-one. I'm easily whelmed, and besides a brief post-Pikmin lull to talk about games they'd already announced, this Direct was all killer no filler.

People seem to be memeing about all of the farm sims, but I saw three of them that I would genuinely consider playing. Rune Factory 3, which looks like a 3DS port, is way more up my alley than 4 or 5. I really like the low-poly look. Literally the only way to fuck it up is if it's not 60fps.

The 4 player farming sim looked really good too, like a goofy party game. And fuckin Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life? That might be my first Story of Seasons game, if I don't pick up Mineral Town first. The idea of an aging population, including your main character, was super ambitious back in the day. I feel like they never really touched on this in the future Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games, and I really want to try it out.

They finally gave a release date for the Life is Strange remasters, which is one of the things I wanted. The Zelda tease was fantastic, you can see how Sheikah Slate powers have been integrated into the new setting and the new sky setting looks stunning. You can transition between the sky environment and Hyrule below, and it looks relatively seamless. I'm really looking forward to Tears of the Kingdom.

Besides that, I was generally along for the ride. New Theatrythm, I hope they upload a demo so I can give it a go. New Octopath, though I'm not a big fan of HD-2D. I hope that surprise launch they did for that other Square RPG is an okay play, and the Tales of Symphonia remaster is great. Here's hoping it remasters the Gamecube version, because the Chronicles release used the Japan-only PS2 one that was way worse.

New Kirby port, new Pikmin - someone in the official thread complained about the Pikmin Bloom coverage, saying it was like having your child kidnapped and then having the kidnappers contact you 20 years later showing your child working as a prostitute, seconds before they announced Pikmin 4 - and that Fire Emblem game looks cute. Doofy protag design for sure, and frankly I would have preferred a goofy musou, but a dumb fanservicey All-Stars game with Marth, Lyn and other Fire Emblem mainstays looks like a fun throwback title. If you play Fire Emblem and/or aren't a cantankerous weasel who's still ass-blasted about Awakening being too easy and the other one removing the touching minigame, how did you like the Engage announcement?

Like at the end of the day, I genuinely feel like that Direct had a lot of good stuff in it. I'm sure there's some stuff I don't remember off the top of my head, and yet look at how much I've written about this Direct already. It was fun to watch, a bunch of new stuff got announced that I was happy with, I got some of what I wanted from the Direct from the start, and they dropped Tears of the Kingdom's title and gameplay. I'm happy.

That's exactly what I liked about this Direct. A Rune Factory I might actually play, a fan-favorite Harvest Moon game getting remade, and a genuinely pretty fun 4 player co-op farming sim.

If you're not into that I totally get how that would be a bummer, look at Gamescom's slew of Dead Space clones, but I can honestly say that this batch of farming sims made me very excited.

I think both critic reviews and user reviews are useful tools in making up your own mind. It's not a matter of looking at an aggregate number and deciding to buy something, it's a matter of taking the best and the worst reviews from both sources and comparing them - see what lines up, see what's wildly different.

For example, I bought Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighbourville after looking at the Metacritic reviews from both critics and users. Things lined up pretty well - fun, interesting character design, large PvE areas, a bevy of offline and online content, but with a capped 30fps on Switch and less content.

I wouldn't have had the same experience with the Last of Us Part II, because the reaction to that game was nuclear from the first full trailer of Ellie kissing Dinah. Actually discussing that game, talking about pros and cons, was impossible for the longest time. In the end, I thought it was a high 7/10 with Ellie and Dinah's relationship being a highlight and the ending fatigue being a significant downside. But the game was either a 10/10 for being the closest that a game has gotten to cinema yet, or a 0/10 because Joel dies and Abbie is too buff for the amount of food she eats as revealed by an in-game meal chart and because it's a shoehorned woke pile of shit that ruins everything that was great about the first game. There was no winning that argument, and it was next to impossible to actually find a reasonable dialogue and compare positive and negative points without running into some sort of buttfuck crazy extreme.

But for the most part, taking both critic and user reviews into account is a good way to inform yourself. Compare reviews, see what lines up and make your own decision.

Sony will probably have the bigger blockbuster titles.

Nintendo will probably have a handful of good ports, and a little bit of BotW2 news if we're lucky.

I'll probably enjoy the Nintendo presentation more.

I have no problem with Christians. I have some very specific issues with Christianity, mostly relating to the church and its effect on the broader culture, but Christians themselves are like any other cultural group or denomination - they're equally prone to being dickheads as they are to being reasonable, decent people. You could say the same of you and me.

I respect the fuck out of personal faith, but the world as a whole would be better off without people "in charge" of the canon. Read the stories, follow a strong moral code in line with the text, speak about it with like-minded Christians even. The second you introduce a church into the equation, the whole thing goes to shit.

The British monarchy is built on genocide, and every Windsor who stands by this deeply racist institution is complicit in the crimes against humanity that allowed such wealth and power to become concentrated under one family - using divine blood blessed by God as their justification for subjugating other cultures and stealing everything they had.

So yeah, a lot of people hated the queen. She, and everything she stood for, fucked a lot of innocent people in the ass.

The fact is that we often have people in our lives who don't share our views, whether they be friends or family, and that's not wholly indicative of your own values. They can also be good people to just talk shit with, leave your morals at the door and have a banter.

I prefer to have friends who have similar values to me, but I live out in the country and I don't have a lot of close friends. The few I do have views that I outright do not agree with. But company is company, and there's always that line where you have to stand your ground that they've only hit once or twice.

I did have a friend who fell down into that Ben Shapiro alt right dogshit. I didn't stop being friends with him over that, though it was really fucking disappointing. I stopped being friends with him because he was a backstabbing piece of shit.
