I feel like, even if you're not there yet, you're significantly close enough that it wouldn't be a bad idea to call the suicide hotline. They might be able to fast track you some help, and if nothing else, they're trained to handle venting.

I hate making topics like these because there's an inherent attention-seeking quality to them, and I don't want to be defined as an attention seeker. But sometimes, this is the only platform I can come to with stuff like this - usually after I feel like I've worn out my welcome elsewhere.

This might get rambly, I'm really hungover and I'm going through a lot. I'll try to be as direct as possible.

My life has been falling apart for the past three months. It seems like it's getting worse every day, and I know that there's a rock bottom coming, and I don't know when I'm going to hit it or what it's going to be.

The way I would phrase it is like this:

I don't think I'm going to be okay, but I don't know what "not okay" is going to entail.

I'm barely functioning as it is, but the only reason I'm mentally holding it together to the degree that I am is because I have to. I'm only "okay" because there's nowhere for me to not be okay. I don't cry, I don't lash out, I don't express how I really feel anywhere because I don't feel comfortable or safe enough anywhere.

There is only so much of that I can take before the other shoe drops. And it's fucking terrifying to feel it coming, to have it hanging over me every waking hour, and have no idea about what it's going to look like until it happens.

And it's not like I'm just letting this happen. I have actively sought out mental healthcare services through every means at my disposal.

I organised some counselling sessions with my doctor, and I was meant to start them yesterday. I waited a month for these sessions, and there were days where I felt like the other shoe was gonna drop before I got to see a mental health professional. I was counting down the days until my first counselling session. I was counting down the fucking days.

I got a call at 10am on the day of my first session, saying that the counsellor had a health scare and had stopped practicing for the year.

And it's like I understand that there is a significant reason behind this occurrence, the person I was meant to see is not okay, nothing about this is about me. I have not been wronged.

But despite that, I needed these sessions. I need them. I have been waiting a MONTH, after two hellish months where I alienated all of my friends and lapsed back into heavy alcoholism, to which I'm convinced that time is of the essence to fix whatever the fuck is wrong with me before I destroy every significant relationship in my life. That month got so bad for me that I had my first anxiety attack ever, in my life. That month has been so bad that I had to console myself by COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS. And they CANCELLED on me, the DAY I had been counting down to. An entire month of my life, WASTED.

During that month, I saw my doctor to discuss interim treatment. I didn't want to axe the sessions, but I needed help as soon as possible. I needed something to get me over the edge. She told me that any mental health professional willing to see me is likely to have a month-long waiting list, so there's nothing she could do.

What that means is that when I see her again to schedule another counsellor, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER MONTH.

I barely made it the first time. Barely. Through eating like a garbage disposal and drinking like a fish, through days of lying in bed and hitting the bar, I managed to get to Friday, the 23rd of July, without the other shoe dropping.

So what the fuck am I going to do now?

I feel like I burned up all the goodwill in my life this past month. I've been stretching it for three months, and I've pushed it to its limit in the way I've been living this past month.

How am I going to wait another month for mental health resources I desperately needed more than a month ago?

I've gotten counselling through another organisation before, so I've asked them multiple times to look into organising some more sessions. The first guy I spoke to wasn't sure how to proceed on that front. The second guy, who I saw yesterday in the wake of my cancellation, couldn't find any video sessions which is what I need. So I'm SOL on that front.

I went to the hospital last Sunday to ask about a mental ward my sister went to a couple years ago. The nurse called them up after I explained what was on my mind, and both her assessment and theirs were that I was not in need of their services. They gave me their phone number just in case, and I have a couple helplines to turn to if things go sour.

I mean hell, I did call a helpline at one point. It's an Australian organisation called Beyond Blue. And it helped in the moment, but the lady kept stopping me to ask my age, gender, location and other details that I think were for cataloguing my demographic moreso than helping me. At the end, she gave me some important advice, but the crux of it all is that she could only stay on the line for thirty minutes before she had to hang up, and she gave me more helplines in case I needed further support.

It's helplines, helplines, helplines, all the way down. We can't help you, but here's a helpline in case you need further support. Even the helplines give you helpline numbers.

So I've exhausted all of my options. It's out of my hands. I've seen my doctor. I've been to the hospital. I've gone to an organisation within my reach. I've called a helpline. And nothing has come of it. I haven't gotten the help I need. All I need to do is wait another month for the chance of seeing a mental health professional, go to the hospital if this progresses, and call a fucking helpline for immediate support if I need it.

I don't know what "not okay" is going to look like. I'm already not okay - I need to say it. I'm not okay. I'm the least okay I've ever been. And I'm not going to be okay.

I'm not going to be okay. Don't read too deep into that, but I'm not going to be okay. I'm trying to get the help I need to be okay, but I'm not and I'm not going to be okay.

And again - I'm holding myself together, I'm cognizant, and I'm aware of the safeguards I can employ if this progresses further. I understand that saying "I'm not going to be okay", especially in the way I just said it, can imply a lot of dark stuff.

I want to make a point of saying, for the sake of any users who are worried about me or any moderators who may take that as a threat of self-harm, that I'm not talking about suicide. I'm not in a place where I'm considering killing myself. So please don't take "I'm not going to be okay" as me threatening self-harm or suicide, because I'm not. I'm just venting about my mental health, which I have a record of doing.

It's like I said before - I don't know what "not okay" looks like. I know it's coming if I don't get immediate help - which I'm looking for - but I don't know what it looks like or what it's going to manifest as. But I want to make it clear that I'm not talking about suicide or self-harm, either implicitly or explicitly.

To cap off this shitshow of a post, I need to vent about one more thing.

An online friend of mine got married about a month ago. Two weeks later, her husband died.

I'm worried about her, and there was a period during my own downward spiral where I removed myself from the equation and focused on her. Her wellbeing, her survival, became my focus. If she's not okay, I'm not okay.

But that's selfish. That's not respectful of her or her grief at all. And I'm so worried that I'm going to drive her away or make things worse during one of the worst times of her life.

The fact that I've tied my own issues into the death of her husband is beyond fucked up to me. I just want her to be okay, but I used it as an excuse to remove myself from my own problems.

I'm worried that I'm going to implode, and it's going to harm her just as much if not more.

But his behavior devolved to the point that he slagged off Johnny Knoxville and started sending Jeff Tremaine and his family death threats for putting him in rehab, and I feel like Bam might even be cut out of the final product due to the bad blood he stoked between them.

Things have been ramping up since Trump got elected. Users fell whole-hog into conservative shitposting, other users flew further left in response, and with events like Caution getting unmasked as a racist and the subreddit getting set up by his ilk the userbase has continued to fracture as time goes on.

Over time, you've probably seen more lefty users reach a fever pitch and inhabit a more combative shell whenever you see them - including me. I try to keep a lid on it or isolate it to a single post or topic I want to make, but I get ass-blasted and I hamfistedly post about my virtues - sure. The reason why you might see lefty types of posters fly off the handle a bit more now is because the right wing shitposters post in blocs, actively bait controversy more often than not and are pushing more extreme rhetoric over time alongside the rise of politicians like MTG.

Not to mention the excuse we have for gimmicks - like we have a guy who banks on his own controversy regarding the claim that he met his wife online when she was 14 and he was 19. Anth0ny stopped with his ant thing what feels like years ago now, the WWE gimmick has always posted in a blue moon and goatthief's whole thing stopped being about supposedly stealing everyone's goats in favour of playing into this massive drama machine between Tails and the rest of GameFAQs. The only thing even resembling a gimmick nowadays is the guy who claims to have groomed his wife as a teenager, who derails topics about pedophilia and the age of consent knowing damn well how people are going to respond to his presence in those threads.

I guess I can't say for certain, given I've only been posting regularly since 2016. But I hear what you're saying, and I think this schism you're sensing is the continuing fallout in the wake of America's political radicalisation. The same way people have to contend with anti-maskers and emboldened racist Karens in real life, the past 5 years of polarisation has brewed animosity and extremism in online communities at an unprecedented scale, and it's sending everyone - both MTG-adjacent conservative users/shitposters and jaded leftist users who contend with them - fucking nuts.

You can see she went in to hit the recording woman, realised she was being recorded and started sobbing and screaming in the middle of the store. The woman stopped recording, thinking that her tantrum had stopped, only for the woman harassing her to start screaming again as soon as the camera was put away.

I don't know how you can defend this sort of behavior from a grown ass adult. She acted like a fucking five year old, while the woman recording it all did so to have a record of this treatment - a choice that was proven to be justified by the fact that she put her phone away, only to be accosted all over again.

You can go "but recording her like that is harassment! maybe she did nothing wrong and the black woman instigated all of this!" - and yet you see the white woman go to take a swing, instantly start sobbing and wailing like a toddler having a tantrum when the phone comes out to record her behaviour, and then rush the woman recording. The worst thing you can say about the woman recording is that she wasn't impressed by the behavior and made a few comments to express her displeasure - she treated the staff respectfully and calmly, especially compared to the woman being recorded, she explained herself and what happened and why she was at the store to begin with, and she asked for security in the wake of all this without devolving into the mindset of a screaming child.

You can't see this video and not think that the main subject of it is anything but a shit-stirrer and the instigator of all this. You see her take a swipe at the woman who's recording it, and then she chases her around the store while screaming at her. How that is defensible to some of you people is mind-boggling.

What we know is that the subject of the video gave the police an exaggerated statement, the woman who recorded the video was able to back up her own statement with the footage, and she's got a GoFundMe with which to pursue legal action. It's also reasonable to assume that the store had a video camera which captured the entire incident, meaning that if she does pursue legal action, she might be able to subpoena the footage.

Honestly, what the fuck happened to America where some entitled moron can lie on the floor in the middle of a store and bellow her lungs out - and not get removed by security or told to leave by the staff? What a revolting human being.

Tbf, game movies are usually made to sell to an audience that would never play the games. I don't think a lot of gamers understand that the movies aren't made with them in mind. That's why despite gamers constantly complaining about how video game movies are made, they never change. They're not aiming for gamers approval. They're aiming to bank off a new audience without having to write an original story

There was a point in high school when I wanted there to be a Metal Gear Solid 3 novelization so I could give a copy to my history teacher. 1 and 2 got written, but 3 didn't because the guy who wrote the first two died I think.

It's like, removing the trappings of the video game format and distilling the tone and feeling into a book - James Bond that occasionally gets super bonkers - would be an awesome way to share something you love with someone who wouldn't be conducive to the video game experience.

Like there'll be concessions sure, but I think Oscar Isaac has a lot of range and he'll be able to pull off the jaded soldier with the weight of the world on his shoulders pretty well. He can be cheeky and dry as well.

The voice is a concern, but ultimately we're getting his Solid Snake with its own merits and qualities. Even if they dubbed over him with David Hayter, it wouldn't be a 1:1 representation of the character we know and love. I've heard him peak his voice as a cocky pilot in Star Wars, and I've heard him in that wacked out tone he takes in Annihilation - there's room there for grit.

I don't care that much. He comes across as kinda short in MGS, his canonical height varies between 5'10" and 6'0", and I feel like a shorter dude would probably be the better candidate for a sneaking mission in the first place. You can get into tighter spaces.

What I care about is the acting and the physique, and I think Oscar Isaac has a good track record with both.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been attached to the project for a couple of years. The Metal Gear Solid movie has been in development hell for years, but Vogt-Roberts has been vocal and active about the movie the entire time that he's been involved. I think he signed on around 2017.

The first lifecycle of the movie was predicated on the back of a prominent Sony executive making statements to the press and nothing further, in that familiar "it's in the works, we'll tell you more going forward, stay tuned" sort of way that never yields results (ala Prey 2 and the like). Since then, the movie has changed directors, and this guy has been very proactive and vocal about his role in the movie's development, which makes me hopeful.

There's also the fact that they've secured Oscar Isaac as Snake - naming their lead star makes me hopeful that development is ramping up, that production will hopefully start by the end of next year and it'll come out in the next two years.

I guess I'm excited because there's actually some sense of momentum and passion from the director, and I want that to manifest in the form of a final product.

I remember Guantanamo Bay being a big deal when I was a kid, and rewatching Boston Legal has refreshed me as to its significance during George W. Bush's presidency.

I'm surprised there's not a lengthier "Controversy" section on its Wikipedia page.

For those who don't know or remember, the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp was an area where terror suspects were detained without trial. Doctors and humanitarian aid workers would get caught up with members of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, as well as other innocent people - the US offered cash bounties to people for dobbing in alleged terror suspects, and they detained and tortured people indiscriminately without trials for years on end. Confessions were often coerced through torture, and people who pled their innocence were detained for longer and tortured without the right to an attorney or a trial.

When detainees in Gitmo killed themselves after months of sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation and sensory deprivation, the US government rules it as asymmetric warfare being committed against the United States for the sake of psychological damage against its soldiers. This demonized them as evil insurgents even in death, even in the wake of the US's war crimes committed against them.

The way the US government got away with this was by labelling all prisoners "violent insurgents" and "enemy combatants". If they were referred to as "prisoners of war" - which they were, considering they were detained during the course of the Iraq War by one of the sides fighting that war, under the suspicion that they were opposing combatants - the US would be beholden to the Geneva conventions. And if this torture camp was hosted on US soil, the prisoners there would be protected by the Constitution - but Gitmo was based in Cuba, offering them no protection under international law or under American judiciary law.

One of Obama's campaign promises was to close the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp. To his credit, he managed to shrink the camp down from over 200 detainees to just under 50. But Guantanamo Bay is still open today - Trump actually signed an executive order to keep it open indefinitely. And now it falls to Biden to close it, which he has indicated he wants to do - but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Gitmo is truly one of the ugliest stains on the world that America left in the wake of the Iraq War. It's been three presidents since it was established, and it's still operating today. It arguably paved the way for today's America - where your human rights can and will be withdrawn whenever it's deemed convenient.

Since 9/11, America has been in a constant state of war. Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and now they're on the wrong side in Yemen. You're in a cycle where you're fed this forever-war, this great clash for freedom and safety that amounts to antagonizing middle-eastern countries and siding with genocidal regimes in Saudi Arabia and Israel. At what point has America stood for peace in the past 20 years? The past 30, even?

This year will be the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The Patriot Act only expired in December 2020, and Guantanamo Bay is still open. American life changed so drastically in the wake of 9/11, with so much power over your information and safety going to the government, and a lot of it remains in place. But there is still room for the American people to heal and move past this dark era in American history.

Close Guantanamo Bay, even as a symbolic gesture. For Christ's sake, make an effort to close the book on the Iraq War instead of parlaying it into more and more conflict. The western world has become so paranoid and jaded that there's an enemy out there waiting to strike at any moment - and of course, the world should be keeping an eye on North Korea and the like. But there has to be more that we can do for the sake of peace. Peace has become a dirty word, but if western society can take measures to try and scab over some of these wounds, I genuinely think we would all be better off. And a great step to take would be to finally close Guantanamo Bay for good.

Most of us have forgotten about it, or we just don't care. But it's loomed its shadow over us for long enough, and it's time for it to close. In the spirit of reconciliation and peace, Guantanamo Bay should be shut down for good.

You have eight year olds who are jaded to the fact that mass shootings happen around them. The fact that you can't see that as sad, instead deflecting to China and Russia as worse examples of violent nations, is pathetic. They're irrelevant to the conversation, because we're talking about America.

No child should be thinking "I've got my head around this whole mass shooting thing, it's happened to me twice", regardless of their age or nationality. No adult citizen should be thinking that either. And the reason why is because they shouldn't be subjected to mass shootings at all.

That's an awful burden to put on anyone, let alone an 8 year old.

I used to watch a lot of fight videos on Reddit, and one of the ones that pissed me off the most was one where a black kid was getting teamed up on by two white kids. They're hitting him, and there's this circle of white kids watching it happen including the one recording - and after they've both ganged up on him, he fuckin breaks - he throws one of them to the ground and pushes another one over or whatever.

And it's at that point, when he gets the upper hand and fights back, that a fucking KAREN-ASS WHITE SOCCER MOM steps in and starts screaming and ends the fight.

She got in as soon as it looked like those white kids were in trouble, and it's hard to imagine her back was turned the entire time this black kid was getting ganged up on. It boiled my fucking blood.

Corduroy was one of those textures I couldn't stand as a kid, like suede or running your nails across a car paint job. But that's lessened over time, and now it's such a fun and sexy look y'know.

I'll look around and see if there are any resources I can find for homeless folks, just in case.

Edit: I found a Tumblr that specialises in information about moving out of home, and they have several posts about what to do if you find yourself homeless. Stuff like finding a place to crash if you can, but worst case scenario you can sleep at the beach during the daytime and stuff like that. Real rough-going sort of stuff.

Hopefully you've got enough support that you won't have to take extreme measures, but if the worst case scenario does happen and you do become homeless, this post might be able to help you.

So I just looked it up. My understanding is this.

There's this thing called Unicode, where each code corresponds to a different character. Like A would be Unicode :1:, B would be Unicode :2: etc. And then it'd roll over to a, which would be Unicode :27:, for example. Then at the end of all that, you have question marks and apostrophes and all that.

And then the next font would begin. And the next one. So on, so forth. It's like when you hit the Alt key and enter in a couple numbers to get a character you want - that's Unicode.

The thing about Unicode is that you can't use a font you don't have downloaded to your computer. So, say you type in a code for a font you don't have. That's how you get those blank squares - your device doesn't recognise that character. So to use those codes, you need a compatible font.

In Unicode 13.0, emojis were added. You can type in the code, and each corresponding emoji will show up. But that's only if your device has a corresponding image to display in its place.

There is no universal set of emojis. And so, each big company has developed their own set of emojis - their own "font" - to display those codes.

That's why emojis look different between different operating systems, or on different platforms. Each emoji is inherent to every device that uses Unicode, with that device's Emoji font dictating exactly what emoji you see on your device - and it's each image in each font that's trademarked to their respective companies, if that's how it works.

So my understanding is that emojis themselves aren't trademarked, but brands have their own unique set of emojis and that's probably where any profit comes in.

Though that poses the question: who owns the iconic emoji designs that we all know? The original cry-laughing emoji, the original poo emoji?

That's a good question. I feel like due to their ubiquity, they might be open-source or public domain or something, or the company that owns the copyright either doesn't profit at all or profits very little, caring more about saturation and accessibility.

It's like, either emojis are trademarked by a big company or a subsidiary of a big company who can throw their weight around for branding like this, or emojis are so popular for branding because brands don't need to pay a licensing fee.

Because it's like - there's a high budget summer blockbuster emoji movie made by the same studio that made Into the Spiderverse. There are waffles, they're on every modern mobile phone, and they're on butt plugs. You can't throw a rock without hitting something emoji-branded.

I'm leaning towards open-source, because there's no way in a million years that a company approves their branding for both a hundred-million dollar all-ages movie and a line of butt plugs.

It looks cool, but I'm worried about the stick placement. Reaching over the dpad to use the sticks looks like it's gonna involve a lot of finger strain. It just doesn't look comfortable. Similar problem with the buttons, the A button is right on the edge of the console.

I get that you need the mousepads, and it makes sense since Valve have been trying to make that magic happen for years now. But there's gotta be some sort of compromise for the sake for ergonomics.
