I've been saying it for years: best Metal Gear gameplay, worst Metal Gear story.

I like it and Peace Walker a lot. I dislike how much it trashes PW's elements like Huey and Strangelove, but it's such an involved gameplay experience that I can play for hours and hours. Saying that, Metal Gear Solid is probably the best game in the Solid series as far as story/gameplay integration goes, and 3 probably has the best story in the series.

I have a laptop from 2016.

This thing is budget. It was budget when I got it, and the years have not been kind to it. It can run Valheim, but only at 1fps. That's not a joke or an exaggeration - one frame per second. I use it to play Runescape and watch the Blacklist. The battery is fried so it needs to be plugged in at all times, and I've had to buy a new charger because the old one deteriorated.

For the past year, my laptop has been scheduling automatic updates. Initially I didn't install anything because I just wanted to play my games and watch my shows. But eventually I was like "fuck it" and I made time for the updates.

I swear to god, they take hours. Somewhere in the ballpark of three hours, when this is just like my nightly chill-out machine. It downloads, it restarts, and it begins applying the patch.

My laptop is so fucking old and budget and stock that the newest updates aren't compatible with it. So after three hours, the whole computer reboots with the same software it had before.

Windows keeps scheduling updates. I have tried to update multiple times, and it is genuinely impossible. It never works. Hours, wasted on this horseshit.

And the worst part is that it keeps interrupting whatever I'm doing to say "we're going to update in 20 minutes, would you like to update or postpone for an hour?". I have to stop what I'm doing every hour to stop Windows from automatically resetting my computer and installing software that won't install.

TopicIs 21 the right legal age for smoking?
MrMallard
08/17/22 5:41:48 PM
#11
On one hand, tobacco is the one narcotic I don't get. There is zero advantage to smoking other than it having a calming effect, but even that comes with time as the smoker adjusts to the act of smoking and in metabolizing the narcotic element of tobacco. It's mixed with ammonia and all other sorts of additives, it's proven to contribute towards/outright cause lung cancer, and the tobacco lobby is one of the largest and most evil lobbies in the American political system.

That being said, there are a few factors in play that I would say make 21 either a reasonable enough age to be able to smoke, or even a bit too old. Namely, the ability to serve in the military.

Like let's be clear, when you're considered old enough to sign a legally binding contract by yourself or to go overseas and potentially die for your country - you're an adult. In the eyes of the law, you are considered an adult when you do those things. Those are life-changing acts that, in theory, rely on an individual having an informed enough opinion to understand the potential consequences of those actions.

To be able to do those things, but to turn around and go "oh no you're too young to drink or smoke", seems remarkably pedantic, arbitrary and even condescending. You want to feed a kid into a meat grinder or saddle them with crippling debt before they're even out of high school, sure. But don't smoke or drink the silly juice, you don't have your big boy pants yet.

Granted? I'm influenced by the culture I grew up in. You can drink, smoke and gamble here in Australia as soon as you turn 18, and that's specifically because we decided in the early 20th century that if you're old enough to go to war, you're old enough to drink and smoke. It's a courtesy if nothing else - if you're going to make adult decisions, you're going to be treated like an adult. And it's not always a good thing, but it seems like the right thing to do in those circumstances.

So here's my take:

For health reasons, 21 is fine. But making people wait three more years after they're otherwise considered adults seems arbitrary, and maybe if you're allowing them to fight and die for your country, you can let them partake in these legal narcotics.

Or - the more radical opinion - raise the recruiting age to 21. Make it so that anyone under the age of 21 needs a parent or guardian to sign off on important documents like contracts. Justify the higher age cut-off to smoke.

Smoking is a public health issue, but it's also an issue of personal freedom. I've gone into this a ton in regards to my posts about legalising pot, where I'm pro-legalisation and pro-decriminalization but I'm critical of the potential negative health effects that weedbros say don't exist or aren't important. I regard tobacco in a similar way - there's clearly a public health concern, but over the past hundred years or so, the right to smoke has been a big thing in our culture and that right is tied closely to the legal age of adulthood. We live in an era where younger and younger people are being held to adult standards and being expected to make those informed decisions that are meant to be made by grown, level-headed and mature people. But the ability to drink or smoke hasn't caught up, and while that might be good for the sake of the body's continued development, it still signifies a lack of respect or a sort of hypocrisy in how we treat younger people. Give us blood for oil, but take a sip of bourbon and you're a delinquent.

In summary:

imo, the question is both health-focused and age-focused, and while 21+ is probably the better cut-off point, I'm of the opinion that drinking/smoking age should be tied to military recruitment age. Either lower the drinking/smoking age, or raise the age at which you can consent to join the military.

Oh you motherfuckers are in for it now.

Fearless - Jet Li movie about a famous martial arts master. Great movie that incorporates elements of wire-fu.

Human Traffic - a movie from a small but passionate trend in British film-making, reflecting the club culture and the youth of the day's struggles as they navigate that grey area between childhood and adulthood. It stars John Simm and Shaun Parkes (the first revival-era Master of Doctor Who and the navigator character from the first two Mummy movies), and it's an okay watch. If you liked 24-Hour Party People, you might like Human Traffic.

Castaway on the Moon - a Korean man jumps off a traffic bridge in Seoul after losing his job. Rather than dying, he washes up on an island underneath and begins to survive in an overgrown jungle-like environment. He's noticed by a shut-in with a telescope, and she begins to sneak out of her apartment to drop bottled messages to him. Really good movie about isolation and connection.

10/10. It may be the one truly perfect kid's show.

Even the occasional miss like The Valley is perfectly reasonable cartoon fare, and the excessively detailed animation and the charisma that oozes out of the screen is unmatched. Episodes like Appa's Lost Days and Iroh's section of Tales of Ba Sing Se set a high bar that the last ten years of American animation has been trying to meet, and we're seeing shows like She-Ra, Infinity Train and The Owl House that are getting up there, but nothing really beats those watershed moments.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has lows that bottom out at like a low 7/10, and the highest peaks of the show changed the landscape of American animation forever. It might as well be perfect.

I've only ever seen screenshots, I'd watch a video dissecting the movie but I don't think I would ever watch it by itself.

Scanning the plot synopsis, it seems like they turned it into a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk story, with the Mishima Zaibatsu being replaced by the Tekken Corporation and a city built in its name, called Tekken City.

Why not?
If users could use reclaimed terms that are still used as slurs as long as they belonged to the group reclaiming them, there would be a lot of other egregious suspendable/bannable terms that GameFAQs would let slide on a case by case basis. As far as I can see, GameFAQs still cracks down hard on slurs with a long history of reclamation, because those terms used in a vacuum are both hurtful and against the ToS.

You also can't verify a user's legitimacy based solely on what they say, due to shit like when right wingers say shit like "as a black man I think BLM are bad for the black cause" despite not being black. So rules like this stay in place to avoid the potential for abuse by bad-faith actors and to ensure a level playing ground for everyone.

Saying the right is the party of science is like saying vegans are the party of red meat

That being said, there are valid criticisms of the impact of commercialism/corporate interference in the field of science. The issue being that right wingers would either entertain conspiracies about the earth being flat and using that cause to "challenge" contemporary science rather than actually commit to a reasonable and ethical discussion of the sciences and what they need. Of course, it's mostly corporate entities empowered by Republican legislation that's been able to outright fuck with scientific studies.

At the end of the day, you can challenge my preconceptions about the right-wing being anti-science by naming a left-wing creationist.

Toy Story 1 is awesome and established so many classic characters, but after seeing 2, 3, and even 4, it's...weird to go back to 1. Not because of the CGI or anything, but just how...mean everyone is to each other. There's so much hostility and conflict in Toy Story 1, it's not nearly as cozy to watch.
To me, Toy Story 1 is a much more barebones story compared to the later movies. Like tropes aren't bad, a strong foundation makes a strong movie, and frankly the rest of the movies benefit from Toy Story being such a strong foundation to build on. But it does make going back to the first movie more of a chore.

The conflict in Toy Story 1 seems to have brought everyone closer together in the subsequent movies. Mr Potato Head, upon falsley condemning Woody as a murderer, outright says "what have I done?" when he realised he almost caused Woody and Buzz to either be lost forever or destroyed/thrown away. The whole story arc of TS1 is Woody overcoming his jealousy of Buzz and working to bring him back to Andy. So of course future movies would have the group being much more close-knit - they worked all that shit out in the first movie.

I honestly agree.

When She Loved Me went above and beyond. I like how the toys had to escape Andy's room and look for Woody, I liked Woody's conflict between his commercial legacy and his love for/duty to Andy, and the whole thing with Buzz 2 and Zurg was really interesting in regards to the Buzz Lightyear lore, a great way of contrasting Toy Story 1 Buzz with Toy Story 2 Buzz, and really fucking funny to boot.

Toy Story 1 is a great story with a great premise, but Toy Story 2 takes the entire thing over the top.

It's a reason, but it's not an excuse.

If you want to hide behind "this is how I was raised and it's all I know", that's your business. But it's not like a card you can pull whenever you face backlash for expressing that opinion. Your only options are to either look further into it and try to see where other people are coming from and make your mind up from there, or double down on what you believe and continue living your life regardless of what other people say.

You don't get a pass for being brought up ignorant. You can add context as to why you feel that way, but that's no excuse. Either work on yourself and decide on what your priorities are, whether you still feel the same or if you can understand the opposing point of view, or keep your shitty behavior to yourself.

She served no purpose in the game at all iirc. Then again, everyone introduced after CS was shoved into the story for fetish reasons, or to fill in a GG proxy.

Mai was absolutely used as fetish fuel too. It is so weird how Bb began as a really high concept time-loop story with some light anime tropes, to a gross pedo-joke and incest-gag ridden mess. Not only that, but the characters who werent used as fetish-bait were useless to the plot, like Bullet. Or they were from some dumb visual novel tie-in. And still served no point.

BB started as one of the coolest stories, and quickly turned into one of the very worst works of fiction Ive ever seen in my life.
That being said, I feel like BlazBlue was basically the contemporary shonen anime counterpart to Guilty Gear's 90's hot-blooded shonen stylings. We went from classic rock references and like immortality and the destruction of an entire country in the backstory, to a main character named fucking Ragna the Bloodedge.

It probably had merits of its own, but BB aways felt like it was filling a void. Guilty Gear is the original and the best, and BlazBlue - for all its merits - is second best.

I would absolutely recommend Guilty Gear for a relative newcomer. Not because it's particularly easy or user friendly, but because it's really fucking fun and cool. If you're concerned about price, grab Accent Core +R the next time it goes on sale - it'll be cheap, and it'll be stylish as fuck.

They rode the emo phase well. The kids who listened to the Killers were basically echo millenials who finally had a pop rock group for themselves. Before that it was Green Day, and before that era was Blink 182 and so on. I think pop rock died just around when The Killers came out. Don't remember any memorable pop rock bands after that. Music generally got really pop or rappy after that I feel.
My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco and Fall Out Boy though.

I'll bump this one more time. I was on the road yesterday and had to work with changing cell signals, so I'll probably have a bit more time to mull things over.
