Damn, you guys make a solid point lol. I was thinking like someone enters a depressive episode and loses his girlfriend, possibly because the girlfriend has been cheating on him or.just because he's angry, and then gets really into Yu-Gi-Oh to cope. Having the couple be into Yu-Gi-Oh and her cheating sending him into a downward spiral makes way more sense.

The worst thing that a vaxxed antivaxxer can claim to be - other than as an antivaxxer - is a hypocrite. But at least with them being vaxxed, they're marginally less likely to contract/spread the disease.

They're fucking idiots either way, but the vaxxed antivaxxers are slightly, marginally smaller pieces of shit than unvaxxed ones.

This whole thing is so disappointing because I want to support the drivers. It's hard, arduous work with tight deadlines, and the sheer act of doing the job takes a terrible toll on the body.

Everywhere relies on truck drivers, they're the backbone of the economy and with COVID everything has been hanging in a very tenuous balance - the supply chain has been like a coil being wound tighter and tighter, until finally the last twist of pressure causes everything to snap. Truck drivers make up most of that coil.

It's not a pleasant job and truck drivers may not end up being very pleasant, but it's an essential job that comes with a lot of sacrifice and hard work, and that's something that should be acknowledged, respected and compensated adequately.

But how the fuck do you defend a bunch of pricks who fly swaztika flags and harass homeless shelters to feed them?

Like I have my opinion on the work, and I have my opinion on striking for fair compensation. But these guys are the fucking worst. You really couldn't put your best foot forward? You had to fly a flag from Nazi Germany?

Of course there's a level of respect you want to grant a striking workforce to get adequate compensation for the work that you do. But honestly, fuck these guys. What a shitshow.

The thing about "curing autism" is that it's championed by external people who are scandalized and upset that their life dare be affected by an autistic individual and is usually expressed in ways that are harmful to autistic people.

Autism Speaks is a big case of this, with their efforts to find a "cure" and their emphasis on upset parents dehumanizing the supposed group they're supposed to be advocating for. Their influence has led to actively harmful treatments used on autistic people, such as "crushing" - where you get a big, soft, enveloping object like a bean bag or a thick quilt, and you sandwich your child between it and a bed to stop them from moving. The sensation, as described by autistic people with sensory issues, is said to be extremely distressing and traumatizing. That one made it into Sia's abhorrent movie Music, which used Autism Speaks as a primary consultant, and was widely condemned by autism advocacy groups as well as autistic people en-masse.

The thing is, we can go round and round in circles talking about a cure - "correction therapy", microchips in people's brains, bullying them to make them "normal". I don't think any of that is ever going to work. Rather, what we need is accommodation and understanding. Rather than paying attention to the upset mother who felt like her baby has never loved her, why not pay attention to the autistic people who grew up being othered, having people question their mental ability right in front of them? Why not ask autistic people what makes their lives easier, what treatment makes them happy? How their life experiences can be better?

Why do we listen to external groups who talk about a cure, who've pioneered treatments that autistic people have subsequently been traumatized by? Why do we talk about invasive surgery that alters the mind in ways that some autistic people find disturbing and crass?

Let's talk about disability aids, of which this supposed brain chip would be considered. There is already a market of privatised medical equipment being sold at prohibitedly high prices, where replacements could be anywhere between a few hundred bucks and a few grand if they were to be broken or were to wear out. The cheapest digital hearing aid on the market is $500, with midrange options starting at $3,000 (source: https://www.consumeraffairs.com/health/hearing-aid-cost.html). Prosthetic limbs cost between $5,000 and $12,000 (source: https://spendonhealth.com/prosthetic-leg-cost/). For a good wheelchair, one that can accommodate day to day functions for a reasonable amount of time, you're looking at thousands of dollars - and plenty of wheelchairs at lower price points are lacking in sturdiness and functionality, meaning that even getting around as a paraplegic or as someone who can't walk for extended periods of time is a pay-walled concept. Medical equipment is prohibitively expensive.

If we're talking $500 for a single, budget, low-range hearing aid - and upwards of $5,000 for a mid-range option and beyond - how much are these brain chips going to cost? And moreover, how much will it cost to maintain them? What if one of them comes loose or stops working - will the person need to get another round of brain surgery to fix the issue? And what is the cost going to be for not only the brain chip, but of the surgery required for it to be implanted - especially if additional surgeries are needed?

Again, I feel the need to emphasize - medical equipment is already prohibitively expensive for people who need it. I can't foresee this brain chip making that any different - rather, I see its intrusiveness as one way to potentially make this shit even worse.

I don't believe a brain chip would go in once and never have to be modified again. And the way people are talking about this thing, as if it's this miracle cure, sounds like people aren't thinking about the possibility of an autistic person having to get their skull operated on at great expense, presumably multiple times throughout their lives, to get this thing.

And here's the thing about the brain chip - it's almost certainly a con.

Think about what Elon Musk has been doing for the past few years - when a child's soccer team got trapped in a series of underwater caves in Brazil, he gunned for Tesla to jump in and conduct the rescue operation - and when the head of the actual rescue party refused his help, he called that man a pedophile. He just tweeted about how leftists think everyone who disagrees with them are synonymous with Hitler. He made a tweet in favor of the US government conducting a coup against Venuzuela. He's a shit-talker and a con artist, and his role at Tesla is to say this controversial shit and keep his name in the news - he doesn't do anything aside from being a fuckwit and lying.

He justifies this idea with "another company was gonna do it worse, I hate the idea of AI taking over the world so I decided to step in and do it first so I could do it right". He talks shit and makes these provocative headlines, like "New Cyborg Brain Chip Fixes Autism". Much like almost everything he claims, I don't believe this is in good faith. I would ask anyone in this thread to get in contact with autistic advocacy groups and communities where autistic people discuss their life experiences living with autism - maybe I'm wrong, but the exposure I have to autistic people in my life skews heavily towards this being another way for supposed advocates to "fix" them, which carries a stigma of them being "wrong" which is a stigma that they dislike. I can't speak for all autistic people, but that's what I've seen.

So let me sum up my thoughts on this.

  • This brain chip idea bleeds into a pervasive narrative of "fixing" autistic people, which has existed for decades at this point and carries a negative stigma for autistic people themselves.
  • The conversation could instead be about how to better accommodate autistic people and make the world a better place for them to live as they are. They have ideas on how to do that, if people would listen to what they have to say.
  • The chip would almost certainly be considered a "disability aid", which is a field of accessibility options marred by prohibitive cost as it is. Not only are you looking at surgery, which in itself gates this treatment off from a lot of people who don't have the time or money for that, the chip itself poses an unknown cost and unknown effectiveness which may entail more surgery later, driving the price further up. No-one is talking about the physical, mental or financial cost of this procedure.
  • After all the shit he's talked, are you really going to trust Elon Musk - noted insider trader, slanderer and general antagonist - to create a piece of technology so precise and perfect that it can interact with the biological circuitry of the brain? I genuinely believe this is a con.

The first revival season is a perfect starting point, because that entire season is a microcosm of the Doctor Who franchise.

You're introduced to the Doctor, a manic adventurer who constantly runs into trouble in his time machine. He has a perchant for picking up random travelling companions who accompany him on his travels, and beasts he often runs into include interplanetary ghosts, genocidal alien conquerers donning tactical armor, alien shapeshifters, a hivemind that can infect and control plastic, and occasionally the odd human being.

You're introduced to the Daleks, which are one of the most consequential alien foes the Doctor has ever faced. You meet Jack Harkness, who - until his actor's shitty antics were uncovered last year - was a beloved character in the show, and you become acquainted with all the toys in the Doctor's toybox - the biggest one being the sonic screwdriver, which opens doors as well as locking them and acts as something of a plot device when the Doctor needs to get out of a jam. And at the end, the Doctor regenerates into another person. It's a shakedown run for anyone who's not familiar with the series, and a nostalgic refresher for people who had missed the show in the 18 or so years it had been off the air. All the building blocks of the franchise are in that first revival series, and later seasons took that lead.and ran with it, introducing other classic monsters and characters as well as introducing new ones.

And while the first season has aged somewhat, it's still contemporary to a degree and it's down-to-earth in a way that makes it easier to get into the space adventures. Later seasons go full "sci-fi fairytale", especially once the showrunner changes, so the first season acts as a grounding point and the next seasons lean further into the time-travel and the intergalactic stuff as you get more and more immersed in the show's universe.

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/01/24/politics/newt-gingrich-jail-time/index.html

As the House's January 6 committee continues its work to get to the bottom of what happened before, during and after the riot at the US Capitol, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a warning for them: If Republicans take over the House, you could well be arrested.

Yes, really.

"I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down," Gingrich told Fox's Maria Bartiromo. "And the wolves are going to find out that they're now sheep and they're the ones who are in fact, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they're breaking."

Which raises a simple question: What laws does Gingrich believe the members of the committee -- which includes two Republican House members -- are violating exactly?

...

The closest Gingrich got to actually explaining himself was when he told Bartiromo that the members of the House committee were "literally just running over the law, pursuing innocent people," adding that "it's basically a lynch mob."

I went searching for what the heck Gingrich was actually talking about and came across an op-ed he wrote last Thursday entitled "The Wolves Will Become Sheep." The piece reads like a longer version of his riff with Bartiromo. In one section, Gingrich writes:

"The January 6 Select Committee is in the process of potentially bankrupting scores of Americans who worked for or supported President Trump. They face financial ruin defending themselves against the committee's attack. The legal costs of fighting subpoenas and the further cost of legal counsel if put under oath by a hostile congressional committee creates a real burden. That financial burden is compounded by the psychological stress of being under assault by the House Democrats -- and potentially also the FBI."

His solution? A new Republican majority should form a "Select Committee on Congressional Dishonesty and Abuse of Power" to examine the work of the January 6 committee.

Again, though, what is the crime that these House members have committed that will mean the "real risk of jail"? Is it, as Gingrich writes, abuse of power?

I did a quick search for "is abuse of power a crime" and pulled up this language from the Department of Justice: "A simple definition of the abuse of power is the misuse of a position of power to take unjust advantage of individuals, organizations, or governments. Abuses of power have been variously described as white-collar crime, economic crime, organizational crime, occupational crime, public corruption, organized crime, and governmental and corporate deviance."

So, it appears as though Gingrich is alleging that the committee is taking "unjust advantage of individuals" in their probe. But, how? By subpoenaing individuals close to Donald Trump to find out what they said, what he said and when? By asking them to come testify under oath and, in a few rare instances where they refuse, by filing contempt of Congress charges?

That feels like very thin gruel. Gingrich, no dummy, knows that. He's just throwing red meat to the Trump base -- consequences be damned.

But suggesting that members of Congress will be jailed for doing their job is a little much even for someone like Gingrich, who has made his name in recent years for making outlandish and unverifiable claims about opposition to Trump.

inb4 "bluh CNN bad source leftist shill" - I cut all the unnecessary snark from the article, and it doesn't change the fact that this happened.

People tend to get upset over the perceived overuse of the term "fascism" nowadays, but throwing your political enemies in jail on trumped up charges is a hallmark of fascism and here you have a Republican suggesting that in the event of a Republican win, that's exactly what they'll be doing.

With Hillary and "Lock Her Up", there were shades of this - but all they had to go on were slander and exaggeration. Hillary's emails and shit were not a jailable offence, and Donald Trump couldn't follow through on his campaign bluster to have her arrested.

This bluster is much more close to home - after all, in the wake of Trump's election loss, he empowered his supporters to attack a building where Congress was sitting for the inauguration of a new President. It was an insurrection - it was an attempted coup. People erected a mock gallows. People brought flex cuffs and guns. And now you have scum-sucking sleazeballs like Newt Gingrich saying "the government is abusing their power in prosecuting anyone attached to January 6, and if we're re-elected we're going to put them in jail".

The Republican party has been radicalized by the Tea Party's abject insanity, and they've been emboldened by Donald Trump's popularity and the toxic support of internet trolls and white supremacists. And you may roll you eyes and go "look at the leftist calling everyone a Nazi", but what you're seeing in behavior like this is the roots of fascism taking hold in one of your two main political parties.

And you can see it in other politicians. Before Marjorie Greene-Taylor was elected, she was a qanon nutjob who recorded herself yelling threats at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez through her mail slot. Ted Cruz is a populist fuckface who slides further to the right in response to his allies insulting him and his wife to his face. The fact that a millionaire Mormon is more of a moderate than most of the Republican party right now is fucking insane.

I wanted to talk about this because dipshits have been downplaying this horseshit for years now. "It's not that bad, you're blowing everything out of proportion, stop making a big deal over nothing". Republicans are floating the idea of jailing members of Congress for prosecuting extremists who attacked a sitting Congress. Between the people who were gathered to inaugurate a new President and the people who erected gallows and brought guns to attack and potentially kill politicians they didn't like - with people trying to POINT OUT WHERE THE RIOTERS' BIGGEST TARGETS WERE - the right has sided with the gun-toting attempted murderers. And for the crime of daring to prosecute them for attacking a sitting Congress - Republicans and Democrats, who were certifying an election - Republicans want to send congressional members to jail.

It's been said a hundred times, but it bears repeating.

This is what fascism looks like.

This reminds me of a Mountain Goats song, he and John Vanderslice had this EP that was like an incomplete rock opera about an organ harvesting colony on the moon where you spent six months on the moon harvesting organs from clones, then six months living in the snowy plains of Colorado completely isolated from all human contact with every human luxury imaginable available to you.

John Vanderslice's songs all feel kinda samey as far as structure goes, but John Darnielle's songs all hit very different moods. The song this reminds me of is the first track of the EP, Surrounded - mostly due to the line "and six fresh feet of snow" and nothing else.

https://youtu.be/ebqb0ZKykuA

If you're interested in how the story ends, the narrator of John Darnielle's songs keeps breaching the rules of the organ harvesting ring, so they put the character in a thermosuit and send him back to the moon to harvest organs, only for the character to begin cracking open clones and eating their organs instead of harvesting them. The last line of the last song is "I know that sleeping bodies hide / sweet things inside".

So? Let him have his tattoos.

I posted Birdplane for a reason. It's silly, but it's because the lead singer sang a song about being trans.

Whether they're trans or neurodivergent or ugly or whatever the fuck, let them do what they want to their bodies. It's like with the lady from Jackie Brown, Lett her grow old and fat and content. It's none of our business.

Honestly I have to stop drinking. I got shitfaced, fell asleep then drank until the sun came up. Probably not gonna live to 50 the way I'm living. Emotionally I kinda wonder if I'm gonna make it to 30.

You mean evangelical Christians are mostly massive bigots? Color me shocked.

Also, if you want to mod me for this - I grew up in a largely Christian society with Christian ideals of decency. I get to punch up at a power structure I've lived under my whole life.
