I watched all the episodes when D+ dropped. There are notable episodes from season 8-12 that are appropriate for jumping the shark.

But there is a season 17 episode where Abe becomes a matador. This was quite possibly the worst and cringiest episode I watched, and is when the show went from being just mediocre to mostly just bad for a number of seasons.
Oh yeah, that's a bad one. The opening where he goes to get assistive suicide - in a prolonged homage to Soylent Green - was genuinely really fucking disturbing. Like you were watching a blissed out Grandpa Simpson end his life.

I remember later in the episode where he's at odds with Lisa, because being a bullfighter he kills the bulls at the end of the fights, he pulls out a cow tail to dry his tears or something. Definitely a bad one.

The Armin Tamzarian episode was just another episode when I was a kid. Like it's not particularly good, I wasn't interested in the maudlin drama of it even as a kid, but to see grown fucking adults pull it out as "THIS IS WHERE MY CHILDHOOD SIMPSONS DIED" is absolutely ridiculous and it always has been. It's up there with grown-ass people complaining about Lisa being an SJW creator's pet who's always right. And shit like this is almost always from the American side of things too.

Here in Australia, the Simpsons is basically a way of life; try and find someone born between 1990 and 2003 who doesn't know at least one Simpsons quote. It was a 6pm staple on Channel Ten for decades.

The later seasons were definitely different, and the Treehouse of Horror segments becoming bland pop culture retreads became more and more apparent. But I watched up until season 21, and I only stopped because my mum got a new partner who hated the show and wouldn't let me watch it after I'd spent the past 14 years of my life watching it almost nightly.

That being said, there was a nadir of the show that just made me feel weird and angry. It's a season 18 episode called Boys of Bummer - Bart's little league team is in the finals, and the game-winning catch is on Bart's shoulders in the last seconds of the game. Bart fumbles it, and his team loses.

The entire town of Springfield proceeds to harass Bart verbally, emotionally and physically. After being put in the hospital after one of these occurences, Bart becomes so mentally fucked up by the unending abuse that to escape the harassment, he climbs out onto the ledge of the hospital to commit suicide. The mob outside tells him to jump.

It takes an incensed speech from Marge for anyone to even consider making amends, but by the end of the episode where they restage the little league game so Bart can make the catch and restore his confidence, the entire thing is so misanthropic and bleak. Everyone in Springfield bullied Bart to toe point of suicidality. What the actual fuck is that?

Also - this reminds me of an episode of a Kevin Smith podcast I used to listen to. It was his Batman-centric podcast of all places, because he had established a charity called the Wayne Foundation to help combat the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children in the US. Googling it, it seems like it's been inert since 2018, so I wonder what's up with that.

Regardless - and the following content is spoiler-marked for triggering content - he interviewed a woman who he essentially put in charge of the Wayne Foundation. She had been subject to sexual abuse throughout her teenage years, recounting a handful of her abusers. One of them was a man who took her to his place every few months and would like pay her money and buy her nice things, and he'd try to get her pregnant because the law of his state is that if a girl becomes pregnant by a man - including an underage girl - he had the right to marry her and keep her with him as his spouse. I'm pretty sure the woman recounting this story was like fourteen at the time.

She never got pregnant to him, and eventually she managed to leave - despite being a pedophile, he at least let her leave when she said she wanted to stop. Years later, when she was around 20 or so, they re-established contact and he was with another young teenager who he had gotten pregnant.

The trafficking isn't legal in that state, but once the teenager is knocked up, it's fully legal for a pedophile to get married to them. That's a law in an American state.

Yeah, child marriage is still legal in like 38 states or something. I don't know if there's a lower age limit - like clearly there would be, no-one is going to marry a three year old to a thirty three year old - but there is a subset of American teenagers who've been married to adult men and have to balance being a child wife and being a high school junior.

38 states is a rough ballpark guess, all I know is that it's significantly over half of US states - like it doesn't just eke out over the halfway point, it's probably closer to three quarters of the country than half. Even one state with a parental consent loophole for young teens is too much, but the actual number is beyond shocking all things considered.

They were worthless from the beginning, it was the biggest scam idiots fell for in recent memory.
I'm in two minds about this. The crypto space is extremely toxic and stupid and people who bought into all that shit and perpetuated it are stupid at best and evil at worst, but the thing about crypto and NFTs and all that being predatory is that it aggressively advertised itself in the hopes of reeling in marks, which it did.

I feel like it's less that idiots fell for NFTs and crypto, and more that an aggressive strain of grifters latched onto it, tied a bunch of pseudo-intellectual jargon and culture war bullshit into it to appeal to the most impotent crowd of people they could find suffering from the Dunning-Kreuger effect, and kept people in those spaces through the use of negative feedback loops and lies.

Like the concept of an "NFT" was popularized through a rash of overinflated tech articles that began blowing up out of nowhere, then the first high-profile NFT was the one they gave out at the Oscars a couple months later with Chadwick Boseman's face on it. Then the space became overinflated with your Bored Apes and pixel things, companies like DC pandered to it by offering Batman cowl NFTs etc. etc.

Elon Musk is a far-right grifter, but he's somebody who exists in the mainstream who actual real-world people have looked up to, for better or for worse - I used to be best friends with a guy who put the guy on a pedestal for being "cool" enough to get a role in Iron Man 2. He was using his massive platform to push crypto jargon like "FUD" and "to the moon" and ultimately validate this horseshit for years. People who take Musk seriously tend to be really callous, fringe and annoying, but until he was exposed as a fraud to anyone who cares and his base of dick-riders dwindled down to the true believers, he had a lot of mainstream support and he used that to lure more people into this shit with dogecoin and his continued coverage of crypto and NFTs. There was a pipeline.

A lot of people poured a lot of money into NFTs and lost it all. I don't feel so bad about that because if you willingly stuck with the crypto community to get rug-pulled multiple times, I feel like you would have to buy into the self-aggrandizement and active malice that comes with the crypto community. If you lasted past the environmental concerns, the fraud and the rampant othering of critics as "FUDders" while you gambled for thousands of dollars, then at best you were still being a shithead. Entertaining the thought that you were gonna be wealthier than you'd even know what to do with it, and that other people were brainless sheep who deserved to miss out on the train and go broke, is really shitty and unsympathetic, and I'm glad you lost your money.

I still feel like there was a concerted effort to blow this up into the movement it became, and I think influencers like Elon Musk and Logan Paul used their brand to lure a lot of people into falling for this entire load of horseshit. I think they encouraged the sort of behaviour that led to people becoming toxic and insular the way that cryptobros did - they actively directed people to that culture and fed into it.

NFTs were popularised by a bunch of artificially inflated bombshell articles about The Next Big Thing, after the media missed out on Bitcoin and the entire cryptocurrency landscape exploded the way it did. They were easily manipulated by a bunch of bad actors, and the fervor was so hot that months after this forced trend was announced, the Oscars publicised their use of NFT gifts and helped legitimise the space into what it became with the help of charlatans like Elon Musk. This was a push by a bunch of bad actors who rode a wave of mixed publicity to the top, and a bunch of people who wanted to be smarter and richer than they were capable of being falling into toxic spaces that fed their negative traits.

It's still on those people for being edgy, contrarian dickheads in the name of owning the libs or getting rich quick or whatever, but I have a lot of misgivings towards the broader cultural push that led to NFT mania. The fanbase were idiots, sure, but they were actively manipulated by bad faith actors. It's a cycle of shit all the way down.

It used to be The Blacklist until my laptop died. I also started a Family Guy rewatch back in January when I got COVID that lasted until my laptop died.

The Blacklist is a good show for one season, a pretty good show for the next two, a great show for the fourth season and then each season after that gets worse and worse. You watch it for the characters past a certain point. Kind of a "Chris Carter Effect" kind of show where they keep stretching out the myth arc until they string you along for too long and you don't give a fuck any more.

Nah, original Dark Souls fans are the worst. Bloodborne fans might be clamoring for a sequel, but you also have talent coming out of that fanbase with the PS1-style Bloodborne demake that came out.

The peak of "git gud" and calling other people scrubs was probably the initial explosion of popularity that the first game had. The DS1 fans shit all over DS2, then DS3 wasn't as good as DS1 (as well-received as it was), then you have people like a former friend of mine who couldn't grasp that the point of Bloodborne was to be more aggressive than your usual Dark Souls builds. The main annoying contingent of Soulslike fans for Sekiro were people going batfuck ballistic over the thought of a FromSoft game having an easy mode, which imo is a way bigger and stupider contingent of game fans than just people buttmad about Sekiro editorials. Then Elden Ring and pretty much everyone loved it as far as I can tell.

I think the group of people who are still the most ride or die for Dark Souls 1 over every other FromSoft soulslike game are the most annoying fandom out of any Souls game. They were initially one of the most toxic fanbases in general, then later games were never good enough for them.

I've seen illuminaughti discourse for a while, like her content is all about scams and cults and her video background used to be this prominent, pulsating star of David, so people were concerned about it potentially being an antisemitic dogwhistle. I can't speak to that one way or the other, I'm just bringing it up.

I checked this out when another CEman posted it this past weekend. That thing about Oz having his home foreclosed on is crazy, because her name isn't on any of the paperwork but she had him sign a confusing legal document that she claimed would save her from going to jail for embezzlement, which is something that Oz told her happened to his mother when he was young.

I don't remember the specifics, so apologies if I've got anything wrong, but my understanding of the situation is this:

* Blaire - the content creator Illuminaughti - got Oz to take out a bunch of risky loans and make a series of poor financial decisions because her credit was shot and she convinced him it wasn't a big deal and he could easily pay it all back.

* The financial stuff she was encouraging him to do, sometimes by withholding affection and floating the idea of breaking up, began to add up. This is while her videos were making something like thirty times what his videos were making. The debt crept up to almost $200,000 which Oz couldn't pay back and Blaire wasn't helping him with.

* Eventually she spins a story about embezzlement and how she could go to jail if Oz didn't sign this legal document, which resembles an event from Oz's childhood that he was shaken up from. By signing the document, Blaire obtained control over Oz's debt.

* This gives her the power to foreclose on Oz's house to recoup debts incurred, which apparently isn't worth a whole lot towards the debt he owes her, and he's been worried about her foreclosing as a retaliatory measure for speaking up about how she's treated him.

* Oz began to work for her on her videos, where she would pay him barely enough to make the debt repayments she was having him pay her - basically, she was giving him the money he was using to repay his debt to her, and only a fraction more than the debt repayment funds for him to use on food and bills and stuff.

* After appearing in a video during the initial Illuminaughti fallout, Blaire contacted the bank to foreclose on Oz's house. If he can't fight this, he'll be kicked out just before Christmas.

I'll give you this, I'm pretty fucked off about the timed exclusivity. I've got a friend who grew up loving Mario Galaxy, and he should be able to pick up a copy of 3D All-Stars if he wants to play it again on Switch. With that, the Fire Emblem game you mentioned and Mario 35 going back in the vault, at least they haven't tried it again - but honestly, yeah. Fair point.

Internet is another point of contention, though at least with friend codes, you can friend local players with a more streamlined system. But yeah, friend codes are pretty hefty. I also thought it was bullshit when online play was free for one and a half years, only for them to start charging in September 2018. I will at least say that at least they only made it $20 USD (thirty bucks for me), because frankly I wouldn't have paid the $100+ PS+ or Xbox Gold if I had those consoles and I'm sure as shit not buying a $700 console just to pay over a hundred bucks a year to play online. My current plan is to get a PC by the end of next year. But the charge was completely arbitrary and it was a stupid, shitty move.

So many Switch games are the best-selling instalments of their franchises. Like the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 shifted close to 10 million copies, but the Switch version sold over 50 million. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is in the top 20 best selling video games of all time at 42.79 million sales. Smash Ultimate is the best-selling fighting game of all time at 31 million units. Breath of the Wild has sold less than Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but it's still sold over 30 million units in 6 and a half years, and Tears of the Kingdom - which came out in JUNE - has already sold 18 million copies.

According to this site (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/), the Nintendo Switch has sold almost 130 million Switch units and has sold over one billion games. It's outsold the Game Boy and every single other home console, though the Nintendo DS did sell 154 million units. Next to the DS and the PS2, the Switch is the third best-selling games console of all time.

Personally, I've really enjoyed the Switch years. The Wii U/3DS years just felt kind of weird. The Wii/DS years are probably the height of Nintendo's success overall, but then you have people complaining about waggle and underpowered hardware. The GameCube years were tainted by people being pissy about Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, and for all its great, groundbreaking games, the N64 was kinda outdated on launch because they sacrificed storage space for power. For every Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie, there was a Tetrisphere. At least as far as market share and brand recognition go, the NES and SNES were probably some of the best years of Nintendo's life, especially back-to-back.

Like for me, it's probably a combined NES/SNES, then the Switch, then the Wii/DS. Every generation has had great games, but early Nintendo was unstoppable, the Wii era printed money ass over tit for Nintendo and the Switch is probably the best mix of the two.

Can't wait for something new, and I'm confident it'll at least be revealed in 2024, but man I've enjoyed this gen.

James Bond and Mickey Mouse were created by bigots.
The James Bond we know is so far removed from Ian Fleming's bigotry that you might as well attribute the cinematic James Bond to Albert Broccoli. The movies - while extremely chauvinistic for their time, at least the earliest ones - actively cut back on a lot of Fleming's views.

Disney has its own problems, like all of their "first gay characters" being either so vague that you can ignore it or so clearly sectioned off from the rest of the movie that you can remove the scenes for foreign markets. But as an amorphous conglomerate, they've moved away from whatever bigoted views Walt Disney might have had. The focus on Disney today is probably more to do with their influence on the legal system (copyright law specifically) and the increasing monopolization of the Disney corporation in the world of media and beyond.

Fleming was a bigot when he was writing the books, and the movies - while products of their time and not perfect - cut a bunch of that out. Walt Disney has been dead since the sixties, and even then you associate the man and his vision with cartoons that are less bigoted than Looney Tunes and with his Disney resorts trying to emulate the cartoon idealism of the movies they've made.

JK Rowling is more pertinent because she made this massive beloved multimedia franchise, and then she went "I think transgender women are an affront to womanhood, I think they're rapists and misogynists and if we don't weed them out nobody will be safe". She used her massive platform to spread pure, undistilled transphobic bigotry to her entire base, she was able to uplift and empower more radical transphobes who undergo more political measures to legally discriminate against transgender people and she uses her massive Harry Potter fortune to contribute to the UK's ongoing campaign against transgender people.

People know James Bond through the more whitewashed movies where he's not as big of a jerkoff. Disney was a lot of things and his corporation is fucked on a bunch of different fronts, but even then, "Walt Disney was an anti-semite" is kind of a recent thing in the zeitgeist - I remember Family Guy being one of the only recent things claiming that.

Harry Potter is both recent and profitable. JK Rowling is still here preaching bigotry and using her money and influence to negatively affect the group she's being bigoted towards. The media, from the books to the movies to the video games, directly affect her through royalties and residuals that she receives directly. You can't say that for Ian Fleming or Walt Disney - they're both dead, and their influence compared to the media they produced has waned. Whereas JK Rowling and her transphobia are inextricably linked to this day.

Death of the author is one thing, but when the author not only clearly and loudly states their position on something and uses the money they make from the property to fund whatever the fuck they're saying, there's still something wrong happening that people can contribute to through their support. You can look at her work and draw your own conclusions, but the continued monetization of her work gives her money and power to pursue her bigotry. "It's death of the author, James Bond and Mickey mouse have a history of bigotry" - and yet the bigoted voices behind those characters are dead, and the money they make don't go to furthering the bigoted agenda of their creators. I can't see those arguments as being made in good faith.

Not a typo, I'm talking about the previous MK release. I've been playing it a lot on Switch.

Basically you have to perform 25 fatalities on the core roster of MK11, not including the DLC additions. There are twenty five characters in the launch version of MK11, including the pre-order DLC Shao Kahn and the unlockable Frost, and doing 25 fatalities on every single one of them adds up to 625 fatalities.

You gain a key item that's their decapitated heads, and by putting them on a spike in the Krypt you unlock a chest with gear for them. Unlocking ten chests (250 fatalities) unlocks one level of Shang Tsung's treasure room, and getting all 25 chests unlocks the second level of the treasure room.

What's more, there's a key item that unlocks another part of the Krypt hidden behind a specific character's fatality chest. I had to reset the Klassic Towers until one of them had Cetrion as the first opponent, and then I had to fatality her and quit out like 15 times to get an amulet.

The game has an AI fighter option, so right now I'm just watching Baraka now through dudes and hoping he doesn't perform a Brutality instead, because they don't count for the chests. It's really annoying and tedious.

Smash was probably my favourite gaming event ever. Like I bought it, didn't like it and didn't play much of it - it was my first Smash game - but those fucking reveals were hitting on every level. You'd watch a Direct and wait for the Smash reveal, and outside of the occasional fart like Byleth, it always delivered.

I went back and saw Max Dood's reactions to the Smash 4 reveals and DLC and stuff, because I wasn't as into the directs and stuff like I am now. The trailers aren't very good. Like seeing Mega Man is hype, but they're very short and they don't have much context. Each of the Smash Ultimate reveals felt like their own little movie.

Like the King K.Rool trailer became a meme and they reused it for Banjo because of how well it went over, and that got kind of old - but the part where Donkey Kong and K.Rool are like gunning for each other and they're both like snarling and tearing at the ground to get more speed is fucking incredible. The Castlevania reveal absolutely fucking owned. For some reason, Mario and Luigi were killed by Ridley and Death respectively, like what?

I don't like the game itself, but that stretch of DLC character reveals was fucking awesome - and then they made a second wave of DLC and kept the reveals coming for another year. That span of time was very fun to be a Nintendo fan.

I have no idea why TC's opinion has warranted almost 400 posts of heated debate.

Huh. Subway doesn't have a mascot in Australia, it was Fogle and then nothing.

The commercials just focus on the food and the green and gold colour scheme.

Dealt* mb

Like they wanted to differentiate themselves from the unhealthy fast food places and their hyper-colorful cartoon mascots like Ronald McDonald and the Burger King, so they went with a human interest story about a guy who lost like 200 pounds by eating Subway sandwiches.

That guy ended up being one of the most prolific pedophiles of the century so far. Dude had terabytes of child porn - terabytes, in the late 00's and early 10's.

They really put all their eggs in one basket, but the basket was made of like woven uranium threads and bat piss.

transfering progress is not a new concept, please stop clowning yourselves.
True, you could transfer saves as early as the PS1.

I get how TC feels considering that these games are adapting a single video game from the late 90's. "It's a different game what did you expect" dude expected his game experience to carry over because both of the games are Final Fantasy 7.

Yeah I did actually like that georgia gold one.

I am ashamed to admit it, but the double down is probably my favorite thing they ever made. Every time I got it, it was a juicy chicken breast that had that good ratio of breading to meat.

Its for the best the double down stays a limited time thing......I really do believe a lot of people will kill themselves with that kind of unchecked power.
In Australia, we have the Zinger Stacker burger all year round:

I live in Australia. Look in Canberra, Sydney, Adelaide. Your top fried chicken place is still gonna be KFC. I'd bet the same is true for the other capital cities and smaller towns - I live in a small town with a KFC, McDonalds and Subway re: fast food.

I would try Popeyes, personally. If they tried to set up Chik-Fil-A I'd hope some bastard burned the fuckers to the ground.

Globally, KFC is stills on top. But even here the quality has been slipping and people are kinda repulsed by the brand. Someone got maggots in their chicken a couple years ago, that shit spreads. It's still popila, but no-one is challenging it.
