Saints Row 2 is arguably still the best in the series, because it struck a good balance between goofy and serious. It was the GTA we needed before GTA5 came out.

Saints Row 3 took some getting used to, but its driving and shooting mechanics are very solid. It's aged pretty well compared to 2, though the humor is very on-the-nose. The fourth game is kind of shithouse IMO, but for 5 bucks? Snap that shit up I guess. Definitely not going to hurt to get both titles.

I'd say to start with Fallout 3, and if you like that then try New Vegas.

NV is rated highly among the Fallout fanbase, but 3 is a great beginner's game as well. Very open, decent mood. Not great story, but it's pretty good otherwise.

If you're receptive to streams or let's plays, I recommend watching Vinesauce's full stream of it. Otherwise, you should be able to get everything you need from cutscenes.

The game has pre-chapter briefings as well as regular cutscenes. If you want the full experience, then find a "Full MGS4 movie" video with those briefings as well as the usual cutscenes. Gameplay, aside from three or four iconic moments, is more or less secondary.

Sayori's death was pretty horrifying. I saw it coming from a mile away, but the moment was awful to witness either way. The art was very distressing and the music really fucked me up.

My guess would be childhood trauma, but I think there's also some reason related to them being kids at the time. Kids can see and be harassed by Pennywise, but I think there's something about Pennywise that makes adults forget that he exists - it just leaves them with a lingering sense of trauma. Maybe they convince themselves that Pennywise was never real, or are so frightened and/or worried about looking crazy that they stay quiet when he comes back to menace the town.

This wouldn't apply to the Losers Club because they made a concerted effort to fight Pennywise, and they essentially won. They also make a pact to defeat Pennywise again. And don't they have like Shining powers? That could also be a factor.

I think in the long run, like looking at gaming as a whole, this could be a serious contender for the greatest title of all time. Like in 2050, if we look back on gaming as a whole, this could be seen as a real stand-out moment in gaming history. A game that aged like wine, that is just a really fucking good game all around. But there are certainly games that are more important than GTAV, the game itself isn't devoid of flaws, and there are games that excel in departments that GTAV doesn't. Really, the "best game ever" is completely subjective - and yeah, "one of the greatest" doesn't mean "the greatest".

But shit dude, if you ask me, GTA 5 is in the running.

Online has been fucking copy/paste content for the past year and a half, almost two years.

It's kind of funny that this After Hours update is apparently being such a pain in the ass for them to develop since it actually has some new work being put into it. They've delayed it internally at least two times now.

That being said, I still play it so they must be doing something right or everything else must be doing something wrong.

Yeah, fair enough - I've heard similar comments in the past. As an aside, I play on PS3, and the hacking in Online is really out of control - both of my characters had their ranks boosted by hackers, and received millions of fraudulent dollars. I kinda wanted to just experience the grind, and hackers ruined that - though I'm not complaining entirely, since I've gotten some really neato stuff with the hacked cash.

Interesting insight with the After Hours pack. I wouldn't deny that Rockstar's focus on Online has been a bit polarising, and I could understand people's frustration when it comes to their handling of the online service. I enjoy it a lot though, and I access it on a legacy console - that's something worth commenting on.

For what it's worth, I have some legitimate grievances about the game. It can be a pain in the ass to play, like it's a bit rough getting between save points without grinding. It's also very clunky, being a PS2 title with some very PS2 camera controls. The main point of contention I have is that I have the PS2 classic on PS3, and PS2 games run like shit IMO - I don't have a great TV to begin with, and the game hasn't gracefully aged in the graphical department. There are legitimate reasons why I dropped the game when and where I did.

But for the last year or so that my PS3 has been out of action, I've regretted leaving Nocturne at the point that I did. I'm posting about it here because CE plays a big part in my experience with the game.

When I first started posting here, I made a pretty well-received pair of threads about the Mass Effect games. I had never played them before, so I liveblogged my first playthrough - the first thread got to 500, and people were helpful and chill and cool. It was a very positive experience, and so once I was done with ME3, I thought about doing the same with other games - turning "Mallard plays *blank* for the first time" into a recurring series.

The follow-up thread was "Mallard plays Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for the first time", or something along those lines. In which I... played Nocturne for the first time. Very self-explanatory.

The thing is, Nocturne was a much denser game to get into than Mass Effect. I spent a lot of play sessions level-grinding and not getting to any story beats, and the pressure I felt to post about the game really burnt me out in the end. Along with the game running like a stale dog turd and phasing my console to another plane of existence every time I went to play it, that made me really want to stop.

So the thread crashed and burned, I stopped playing the game and I went on with business as usual. It kind of sucked, like when I went to play Bioshock for the first time.

Since then, my first PS3 kicked the bucket and I got a Switch last Christmas. I like the console a lot, but it doesn't have many RPGs at reasonable prices - and I found myself thinking about Shin Megami Tensei, just wanting an interesting RPG experience to play. I recently got a second PS3, and Nocturne was one of the first titles I downloaded.

The current plan is to take it slow. Balance Nocturne with my other games, like Borderlands and GTAV. Give the game the time it deserves, throw it on while I listen to a podcast. Stuff like that.

It's aged very well - the core mechanics (driving, shooting) are rock solid, the "party switch" mechanic was a novel idea and is still very good (would I be wrong to say that it's been unmatched since, or even untouched by other video games in a similar manner?), and the online is arguably one of the most cohesive, content-rich and entertaining online services in a console game. The graphics might be a bit rough compared to stuff like God of War 2018 and stuff, but I would argue that it still looks fantastic for a game made 5 years ago. Like shit, by the time San Andreas was 5 years old, it looked crusty as fuck and it was a bit rough to play. GTA5 is really hanging in there.

People have genuine grievances, and that's fine. The game certainly isn't flawless. But I think it's one of those games that is going to go down in history as one of the greats.

Personally, I like the music a lot. Marble Hill Zone has the best song in the whole game. It's a fun little tech demo game that became the foundation for better games later down the line - same as Crash Bandicoot, imo.

Mind you, the article was written because a guy was working on some ISIS shit and got arrested. Dude was an outsider who moved from Sydney sometime in the early 2010's, whereas there are families who have been a part of the community for so long that I went to kindergarten with their kids. I kinda understand why there was a fervour going around, but the article itself painted my town as a melting pot that was about to boil over and erupt into violence, painting every Muslim in my town as a terrorist waiting to strike - when that wasn't at all the case. Using one fuckface's crimes to paint a whole community in a shitty light, because it gets clicks.
