Injuries happen, of course, and deaths aren't unheard of, but generally the dogs are well-cared for and they do a lot to ensure dogs are healthy at the start and monitored for injuries and other issues by veterinarians at checkpoints along the race, and they penalize/suspend mushers if there are signs of abuse. And being in Alaska, the performance in snow is a real plus, and if it ever needed to go to a Mazda dealer for any work that'd be a huge time + cost sink.
