Injuries happen, of course, and deaths aren't unheard of, but generally the dogs are well-cared for and they do a lot to ensure dogs are healthy at the start and monitored for injuries and other issues by veterinarians at checkpoints along the race, and they penalize/suspend mushers if there are signs of abuse.
