Doubtful. Injuries happen, of course, and deaths aren't unheard of, but generally the dogs are well-cared for and they do a lot to ensure dogs are healthy at the start and monitored for injuries and other issues by veterinarians at checkpoints along the race, and they penalize/suspend mushers if there are signs of abuse.

And while the extreme conditions of the actual race are a different story (though the breeds are well-equipped to handle the cold and long distances), from personal experience being around teams of dogs during Iditarod training, they seem to fuckin' LOVE the running and pulling.

Peta taking the edgelord slant is such a weird comms strategy. If they were level headed and reasonable, they may actually grow a serious following.

It just feels like all their comms are run by leashair sophmores who come from sheltered upper class households.

This is much crueler imo. Dogs have instincts to perform a job, Huskies have enough energy to run hundreds of miles a day as a result. People who limit them to an apartment and a walk once a day are just as much in the wrong and limit the dogs life and make it go stir crazy.

Life expectancy for a sled dog is 14-15 years. Life expectancy for a household Husky is 12-15 years. Take that as you will.

I don't see why any animal would enjoy serving people as a tool.

PETA is a pretty fucked organization because like another said yeah they'd likely just euthanize the dogs anyways, however it's illogical to think animals actually enjoy being our work/hobby slaves. They do it because of training and obligation.

I mean, it's what they're bred for.

It happens with all kinds of dogs. Get a greyhound and keep it where it can't run, it'll be miserable. A lab that no one plays fetch with will go out of its mind with boredom. And if a dalmatian can't drive a fire truck, it starts drinking heavily.

Entirely wrong. There's training, sure, but also literally thousands of years of genetic manipulation via breeding to make them want to serve. In this specific case, the dogs are also bred with the desire and capacity to run literally hundreds of miles in cold weather. They're more comfortable in the snow than out of it.

The cruelty is in taking dogs that are bred for specific jobs and trying to make them act as housepets. People who don't know about dogs shouldn't get to fucking have dogs.

So being a work slave is in their DNA is your argument. If only capitalists could tap into this power. Like I don't know how you think they could actually be bred with the literal desire to be sled dogs. Bred for the ability to do it well? Sure. Bred to be overly loyal to a species that domesticated them and so are noticeably subservient? Sure. Bred for a specific occupation? Nah.

Like I said, physically I don't disagree, but to say it's literally in their DNA that they want to pull over-weighted sleds is silly.

And I have trouble accepting that them being bred to be slaves means they actually want to. Like I said, training and obligation.

Have you ever actually spent time around "working breed" dogs? Seen how they act when they get the opportunities to burn off a ton of energy vs when they don't?

I think there's a pretty big flaw with the whole "Well I don't want to pull a sled so a dog must not want to either" logic.

I don't really look at anything a dog does and wants and think "Wow I wish I could live like that" personally and that goes for both wild and domesticated.

It was a moose. A deer wouldn't be an issue, easily scared off by a pack of dogs. An angry moose could have killed them all.

Apparently 3 dogs died in the race this year, first deaths in five years.
