new Junji Ito series coming to Netflix in January - HANGING BALLOONS PROMISED (along with Tomie and Soichi)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPNo4QttuWI

I haven't read all his work yet - I haven't read any of the Tomie or Spiral stuff for example, criminal I know, but I knocked out a majority of his repetoire during a binge a few years back and never went back to finish everything off - but Hanging Balloons is a personal fav, probably #2 among the short story repetoire next to Enigma of Amigara Fault. Now if we could get that, or even Hellstar Remina in the series, man... can't get my hopes up (see: the much-maligned Junji Ito Collection series)

Understandable, that was still close enough to the glory years (or still in the glory years from some viewers' perspectives, I can imagine)

Scanning those past brackets, puts current year results a bit more in context. Death Note squeaking by two contest legends (and Infinity Train), Animaniacs/Looney Tunes/Bebop making similar depth runs in the past.

I guess Gravity Run/Evangelion is more of an outlier here, feels like they get fed to the Futurama/Animaniacs winner, but that's what I thought Death Note's fate would be so I guess anything's possible...

Thanks! So maybe that was also part of the Yu-Gi-Oh appeal last year, to prevent a 3-time Futurama champ, or maybe just coincidental? It + Bebop today the only past champs still alive in the quarterfinals.

Oh wow, nice for Death Note, probably getting fed to the Avatar juggernaut next round anyways but still. Anything's possible.

I was thinking recently how interesting it is, looking at anime vs. typical U.S. television productions. If a tv show's successful they'll run it into the ground for 6, 7, 8 or more seasons, milking it for whatever they can until the product at the end is so degraded in quality vs. the earlier glory years. Hardly anybody fondly remembers tv shows cancelled after 1 season with 13 or 22 episodes, only Firefly comes to mind? Same "declining returns" principle could apply to animation too though maybe there's more longevity room there.

Meanwhile the anime world is replete with these 1 or 2 cour series that remain legendary for years if not decades later. Was thinking about that with Paranoia Agent and its very unexpected but very nice run here, we're a long way from 2004. Though I guess the contest is heavy on 90s/early 2000s representation so I shouldn't be too surprised.

Just finished catching up on Wednesday shows.

Survivor: very happy with that elim, but also realized I don't think I care for any castaway other than Cody which can't bode well for me??? I guess I can also root for the continuing Gabler trainwreck, lol

Amazing Race: very happy with that "elim" too, and following on/countering previous comments, I felt that team was the least edited and I didnt care so no loss from my perspective. One other tidbit I meant to post in here but didnt: in last weekend's preview, a member of every team appeared except Abby/David and Quinton/Mattie so wasnt worried about losing a team I like. Unlike Survivor, still have many options remaining...

Lastly, the song during the dance is an absolute bop, I rewound episode to listen to it again and was grooving in my chair, lol.

Oh I definitely dont prefer dubs, dubs fill the lower tier of what I've watched but I'm trying to force more dubbed series into my queue. If only for not having to focus 100% on the video for some light multitasking...

Apparently there is a dub (and 13 eps, I guess an OVA?) so will give that a shot.

You know what series never got a dub so wouldn't require this question? Legend of the Galactic Heroes, available now on HIDive!!

(...I still need to wrangle 3 users to pool their series nomination with me, damn it!)

Probably dangerous to add more series to my queue with so many still left to be ranked, but I like the Sunday Without God concept (only seen something like it once before, the Paradise X comic series) and want to see how it plays out. Only 12 eps makes that manageable too so gonna pick it up.

Dub, sub, or doesn't matter?

My only experience with Demon Girl Next Door was saving it as part of a trade pact in SMFAS, knew nothing else about it. For some reason I assumed it was a romance comedy, literally the girl next door as love interest for a generic high school protagonist?

Well you know what they say when you assume, that writeup set me straight and really paints the picture of a series that sounds like it has a lot of heart to it & is a lot of fun! Learn something new every day, as they say.

Roba, don't worry about it, I never should have made that post in the first place. Like you said, it's almost certainly that episode 1 thing!

Don't change anything you're doing here, this is literally the best topic on B8 and I look forward to the daily rankdowns (and also encountering all these series I've never heard of before, lol) so please don't do anything differently.

Only thing I could recommend is to bury anything possibly spoilery within a paragraph, if it's not at the start or end of a block of text it's more likely to pass over. But otherwise people should expect to skip over any series they feel the need to, I've been doing that with no issues otherwise (especially the dramatically-low Darling in the Franxx ranking, I still feel compelled to keep it in my queue and watch it... will read the writeup on the log site afterwards, lol)

Ah if I was scrolling down and saw Steins;Gate I would've skipped the writeup but I scrolled up from "last new post" and my eye caught one sentence in Kurisu writeup I probably shouldn't have. Hopefully something that comes into play earlier than later in series (but also what I get for always being 10-15 years behind on my first time watching classic series!)

Excited to watch S;G in a way I haven't been since, well, probably LotGH which ended up being my #1 all-time. Need to watch Ergo Proxy first based on my viewing queue though, probably starting that this week. Really need to just find the time more than anything...

Also liked the Death Note/Light writeup and am glad to see L wasn't in the top 100 list, super overrated character imo. Light was so good even when the show weakens in the final stretch

3 contests ago Gen, it was XXI where Seph and Cloud were something like 38 and 37 and Cissnei was 34 (hence the delightful Lea comic).

But yeah, those days are long gone, but also should be the expectation I'd save any FF7 character, though I'll probably never shake that. If I'm back earlier next time it's literally just going to be the ladies I save (and I can safely say that since Yuffie is still hard booted, phew). So whatever happens, happens.

I believe there's some playable moogles that haven't been in yet.

Did somebody say...

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/3/7/AAC56kAADwdp.jpg

In Final Fantasy VI, there are 10 moogles in Narshe that are temporarily playable.

finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Ten_Moogles

Because they're named characters, they are eligible to be nominated into SMFFFC. So why not nominate all ten into the contest at once?

For peak efficiency and to avoid any mishaps, I figure the best way for MoogleQuest XXV to work would be knowing the list of who wants to nominate the moogles ahead of time. So if you "pledged" to participate, I'd be tracking the pledges and determine who needs to nominate which moogles (double and single noms) to satisfy all conditions, and then when the nomination topic goes up I'd give you the list of moogles you need to nominate. With enough "pledged" members, we can use our nominations to get all 10 Narshe Moogles into the contest!!

(Alternative option is you just do your own nomination of moogles and some of us just work around what others have done to "fill in the blanks", as it were, though the more coordination that occurs the better our chances of pulling this off!)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/3/8/AAC56kAADwdq.jpg

It's a challenge to see if it's doable, and I think there's a great opportunity here for users who never nominate any characters during the nomination process to pitch in on this quest. Though I feel like those users probably aren't the ones popping into the nomination topic when it goes up or this results topic almost 2 weeks after the contest ended, but you never know...

And hey, even if you do normally nominate, but you're feeling good about the current slate of characters you'll need to support, why nominate in more to add to your workload? That's 1 double + 5 single nominations that'd be going to waste otherwise, which could instead be donated to the cause!

Worried about some character you support getting booted? There's 10 freebie hard boots right here to lessen your worries!

https://i.imgur.com/mJWWbRi.gif

I'm sure you have questions:

Ok this is ridiculous, why do this?
Why climb a mountain? It's a fun challenge just to see if we can do it!

How many "pledgees" do we need to pull this off?
It depends how much we want to push our luck on this - it would naturally be heartbreaking to only get 8 or 9 Narshe Moogles in instead of all 10 in at once. It's truly a one-shot deal for all 10!

The entry cutoff this year occurred with 8 noms, so if we aim for that at a minimum - and time/structure the nominations in such a way to win any tiebreaker possibilities - it looks like 12 users would be the minimum needed.

At "84" combined noms, that'll give 8 noms to six moogles and 9 noms to four; the six moogles would each receive 48 of the 60 "single" nominations as the first action, in order to satisfy the tiebreakers ("number of nominators, and then by nomination order") with the remaining 12 singles and 12 doubles being allocated to the remaining four. Though that is assuming perfect "pledging" with coordinated nominations, the ideal scenario for sure.

To be even more safe, an extra 13th user would let us get 9 nominations on each moogle so coordination would be less of a need in that case.

We have rules against deals involving future contests, doesn't this break that?
No? No deal is being made here, I am literally giving you nothing other than the joy of participating in this challenge!

"But I want to nominate in [some character softbooted this year / hardbooted 2 years ago / long-forgotten trash from the raytan era / Wakka]"
Stop thinking about it, it's not worth your time.
Look into my eyes.
Nominating in lost causes and frivolous characters is temporary.
THE GLORY OF 10 NARSHE MOOGLES ALL ENTERING THE CONTEST AT THE SAME TIME IS FOREVER!

So, are we going with the GBA or SNES names?
If we're at the point where we need to make that decision, we've already won!!!

Alright that's the post... there is now a non-zero chance I replay FF6 before the next contest and name Locke "MartinFF7" so I get that screenshot perfect.

Anyways, some food for thought over the next 7 months or so!

Martin I'd like to remind you that you rooted against Aeris in last year's final

Yes thanks for that... for me every year is about rooting for a long-deserved winner and that year was Kefka's! Just edging out Aerith who had her own "deserving" claim since he had the deeper contest history. Every year other than my first year when I didn't know any better, oh to dream of another depth Cissnei run...

Strictly in my opinion, the Lightning-Squall-Kefka-Ramza stretch has emptied the cupboard of characters that I "feel" like deserved a win, other than my own of course. Or maybe that's all just cognitive dissonance on my part but hey, we'll see what next year brings and what new challengers come up to the mat. I certainly feel about Aerith the way I felt about Lightning or Kefka in those years and there's no competition there!

Speaking of new challengers, I am really more interested in the nominations topic, let me make that post I keep putting off...

hey, so I don't know if this was settled, but in the nominations topic there were discussions on switching Days 1-10 to be 1/1 rather than 2/2? Was this further discussed over the course of the contest/was a final lefty declaration made? Any chance Days 1-10 could be Day 21-50 1/2 style instead, gimme those 4 hour rounds...

20 rounds of FoG does sound pretty terrifying if that's where it ends up going, though certainly easier to administer and less overall time expenditure. Lot more holding though. All the more reason to nominate in TEN NARSHE MOOGLES, ah I need to format and post that at some point.

So here's some more stats I was alluding to... this morning, I guess? time flies.

We've had 5 finals in the leftystats era but I've really only cared about the last four (also no stats logging for XX so I'm not digging through those topics), I took a look at who saved which finalist in each of the past four finals.

First thing I wanted to see: the most successful, those who saved the eventual winner in all four instances. There are FIVE users who saved the eventual winner - Ramza, Kefka, Squall, Lightning - and also went 10x with saves on each of them, naturally.

So it's at this point I did venture into the cesspool of the XX Finals topic to see what their votes were as a tiebreaker, and 2 of the 5 dropped off:
-v_charon did not save in the finals: can't blame him, but a tiebreaker fail as a result
-Xuxon saved Cid P 10x in the finals: the correct choice for saves given, but wrong choice for the tiebreaker

Which leaves us with these 3 users who not only saved the winner in each of the leftyera's 5 finals, but gave their full 10 save allotment to the winner in each instance:

Robazoid

MZero

swordz9

Congratulations for the consistency and achieving your desired outcomes five straight times!!
(Robazoid technically gets an asterisk for also giving 1 save to Delita, not to mention the coin flip Ramza choice, but we'll let all that slide I guess...)

So Xuxon and v_charon join them in being 4-0 over the last four finals, at least. Now how about the other end of the spectrum?

Well as luck would have it, there is only 1 user who went 0-4 over the past four finals, regrettably: StifledSilence! Granted he only gave 1 save in XXII to Delita but for the purposes of this analysis, still counts!

If there's some small solace for him here it's that - again looking back at the XX horror - he did go 10x for Fang there, so he's at least 1-4 over the past five years, but yeah... let's make that 2-4 next year!!!

I was going to put everyone's finals records over the past four contests in username alphabetical order, but I imagine you all remember how you voted in the finals, right? So decided to tier you instead based on your number of finals appearances and outcome records, in descending order while grouping the 4, 3, 2 and 1 finals-saving appearances together. The dilemma was whether to go through the same XX exercise with everyone in scope but nah, I really can't.... just keeping it to the last four finals for now.

As a sidenote, of the 44 users who've saved in each of the past four finals, we're averaging 2.2 wins, above average. So uh.... yay team?

So here's the success records over the past four finals for everyone who saved in the Ramza/Aerith final, excluding some users who only showed up to save Aerith 1 time, you're dead to me, and if you couldn't show up a 2nd time you're probably not reading this right now (and if you are - you're no longer dead to me but more saves next time please!!!)

FinalistAerith

Too soon!!!!

Ah that does remind me that I never did my Aerith-saver-thank-you post and I was planning to do like individualized thank-yous to each person that saved her and that would've been beyond even the level of cringe I'm known for posting so, passing on that idea.

But I still wanted to thank everyone who went 10x for her in the finals, we kept things kind of competitive for a bit. To TotallyNotMI for carrying the torch as always, and Kaelee with the steady stream of Aerith savers from the casual early rounds through the crazy late ones. To Pokewars, Suprak, and MWC as the primary traders when I returned, and the additional traders who joined in for the stretch run.

And lefty.... I remember trying to figure out if he had a double-trade arrangement with someone since he was getting Tifa and Aerith every round, I couldn't believe it, living the dream of being on the same team as lefty, hahaha. Ideally we're all back at it again next year!!

So thanks again to Team Aerith (and Team Tifa headed by Koala and BCT, naturally), sorry I wasn't a part of the journey/daily grind, but seems like you did great in my absence so I haven't learned any lessons about my not being here potentially causing great misfortune.

TotallyNotMI, hope you'll be back for the Third Time's run but if you weren't I wouldn't blame you, I was around for 1/10th of the contest and I was tired at the end so I know you have it worse. Ideally I can pitch in more next year, I don't know what my life situation is going to be next summer so can't commit, but ideally I'm in earlier in the process if not from the very beginning. Hopefully we get the team back together and maybe some new pickups!

Now gonna paper over this sentimentality with a giant wall of text stats dump: user success in finals during the lefty era, gimme a few minutes to format that.

For the poll: Other - The Morning Star

For the contest, feel bad since I wont participate so just a single nom and if it doesnt qualify then probably for the best:

Lucifer (The Prophecy)

It's a deep cut but Viggo Mortensen is just so good for how briefly he's there.

this is always the funniest part of the contest because people have dreams and ambitions about next contest that mostly fade away within like 20 rounds

Yes nominating in 10 Narshe Moogles to be booted within first 20 rounds is the dream and ambition.

I had a "MoogleQuest XXV" post drafted ready to go sometime before the finals but someone was seeking an auto at the time and I didnt want to step on it with my giant wall of text. Cant post now either, maybe later... also got more stats for later too

Year of the bottom ten newstats sounds fun

but what about leftySTATS?

Oh that could be interesting w/ the pretty small sample sets (also semi-unrelated but I had an idea for something fun that I already had mostly covered but will need to expand upon now, probably gonna take some more time...)

Ok, leftySTATS but per usual, only characters w/ min 4 appearances (out of 5 possible opportunities to appear)

1. Barret
2. Aeris
3. Kefka
4. Seymour
5. Garnet
6. Squall
7. Cecil
8. Ramza
9. Rikku
10. Lightning

.
.
.

10. Hope
9. Noctis
8. Steiner
7. Vayne
6. Cindy
5. Setzer
4. Balthier
3. Rufus
2. Relm
1. Zack

Of course 1 good or bad showing will spike the average in either direction eg the Ramza win leapfrogging him into the top 10.

One more bad Seifer, Umaro, Reno, Elena or Wakka is good enough for leftystats worst place. Gimme that Wakkamption run!
