I can think of so many examples, myself included who was a nerdy dude, really poor sense of style, somewhat timid, etc. I started hanging out with this dude who dressed really well, he got me into style. I dropped maybe 250 bucks buying a new wardrobe. (clothes that were actually fitted and looked nice) I cleaned up my face and hair. Got some new shoes. Suddenly I started getting so much more attention from women, more looks, more respect in general. It was an amazing turnaround. I had a few female friends and even they were like damn you look good. It wasn't fake by any means, but it allowed my personality to come out and I actually became a social butterfly. This happened in second year of college and suddenly I started getting invited to all these parties and events.

It just takes that effort, some knowledge on style, and a few hundred bucks. But it can change your life.

Our ICU is completely full and more than half the patients there are COVID. These guys tend to stay for at least a week if not several weeks. It completely clogs up the system to the point where critically ill patients are overflowing in rooms where they are probably getting suboptimal care. And often critically ill patients are stuck in rural ERs for days at a time because all hospitals around them are full. And trust me you don't want a critically ill patient, or any patient for that matter, to sit around in an emergency room for days at a time.

No one is really talking about this point but I am most definitely seeing this right now. And yes I have seen patients die because of this.

MaddenDude--

Seems like the more expensive a house is, the more bang for your buck you get. In california at least 700k-1mil affords you a decent house in general (not including the high-end neighborhoods in select cities) but it really feels overpriced. 1 to 1.4mil affords you a pretty nice house as well and it feels like the price is somewhat justified but still on the high end.

Once you get to the 1.4 or 1.5 mil + range, you actually feel like you get your moneys worth. If you had to plot value vs price i think the point of inflection will be at the 1.4 mark.

I sympathize with them but its hard to empathize. I always ask if they are vaccinated and aside from 2 people, all have said no. (And those 2 left the ICU and went home within a week, and they had serious medical conditions that involved their immune system being suppressed). And part of admitting to the ICU means I have to ask questions like, would they want a breathing tube and chest compressions if they weren't able to breath on their own or their hearts were to stop. And I also have to ask what family they have, spouse, children, parents, etc, and if they were unable to make medical decisions for themselves, who would they prefer making them? Thats when shit gets real for them. The most disheartening thing is, with severe covid in the ICU specifically, theres a high chance they will need the breathing tube and be incapacitated to the point where family members are making decisions for them. So in my head, the question isn't "if" its "when".

I know several of them are Trumpers but they've been pro mask, pro vax, and pro listening to doctors.

But I guess I found the real bad apple, she's like the oann / qanon type of Trumper. My wife is pretty close to her. We've been long distance from her family since we've been married and I don't start conflicts with anyone in her family just out of respect that I'm some dude who is mostly away and just visits occasionally for family events.

But since we're moving closer to them, I need to warn my wife my patience is gone and I might just say something insulting to her face, and I won't gaf. I don't want to associate with people like that. Her other Trumper family members aren't necessarily Trumpers, they're just Republicans who admit trump sucks and admit that they vote republican because of tax benefits to their small businesses. So at least I respect that they keep it real. My best friends are the sale way and I can agree to disagree with these people. But the extreme right wingers can fuck themselves.

I'm sure that's true, I'm sure they do follow the evidence. However, you cannot deny that a doctor would lose their license if they said the vaccine shouldn't be used on the general public. They'd be ostracized like crazy. That fact alone should make you question things. Even if you agree with the vaccine narrative, you should still take a moment to think about it.

Even if you're right, if you're given a choice between agreeing or loss of livelihood, you never had a choice to begin with.

The vaccine is not a narrative. You're just making up bullshit and your examples are stupid. No medical decision is without risks. A doctors job is to evaluate the risks, benefits, and alternatives of every medical decision and advise their patients with that knowledge. You can be even a bottom tier doctor and realize the risk/benefit of the vaccine overwhelmingly favors getting the vaccine. Advising patients against it IMO would be malpractice and I think you should lose your license for it.

This argument we're having is a perfect example of how the average person has no fucking clue what their talking about when it comes to healthcare.

The CDC has shown that they'll just make statements that are popular and doctors can't go against the grain or they'll lose their jobs, possibly their license. If it wasn't so politicized and people didn't try to shame so hard, I'd definitely take those things into consideration. But it's hard for me to trust a situation where 99.9% of doctors choosing between agreeing with it or losing their livelihood.

As for the 2nd part. Yeah, it does happen a lot, but not when you're healthy. It's used when you've already contracted an illness and the fully approved options didn't work. This is different from that.

None of that is true. Doctors follow the evidence, thats it. We are able to read the actual studies ourselves and determine whats good and bad. Theres a reason why Doctors/Pharmacists have the highest rates of vaccination and the rates decrease as you go down in education like physicians assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, MAs, etc. Theres a reason why Doctors were the first ones in line to get the vaccine when it was available.

I was someone who was apprehensive about getting it because I just don't trust a vaccine that's not FDA approved.

I get this viewpoint but the FDA allowed its use under emergency use authorization. Theres plenty of great data to support the vaccines safety. The CDC and 99.9% of doctors are advocating for it. I just don't get how you are actively ignoring the major governing healthcare agency and all healthcare professionals, just because another government healthcare agency hasn't yet fully approved it.

Also I don't think people realize that when you're hospitalized, doctors use medications to treat you all the time that aren't FDA approved for that indication. Thats especially the case with COVID.

"Surplus of ventilators" is one of the worst takes I've heard so far.

Its not about ventilators, its about beds. What makes this the worst surge yet is not just that so few people are vaccinated, but the fact that people no longer fear it. Its been over a year and so if they haven't gotten it up until now, people think they're safe and it won't effect them. So everyone is still going about, having large gatherings, not wearing masks.

What that means is that not only are people getting COVID, but people are coming to the hospital for all sorts of things. During our earlier surges when there were complete lockdowns and mask mandates, people were still scared. Hospital admissions for non-covid things were way down. Elective surgeries were all postponed to make beds.

I'm in a large hospital in the south. During the worst covid surges we were able to accommodate and take care of everyone that came in. This surge is taking off rapidly and we're completely full. I'm literally the doc on the phone receiving requests to transfer patients in, for covid or non covid things, and my answer is unfortunately no because we have no beds.

All people have to do is get the vaccine and we would literally be over this shit by now.

Its because when I was younger and naive, I used to think, maybe that person who is giving me bad customer service is just having a bad day, I don't know what happens in their lives, I should be a decent person and be nice to people regardless of how they treat me.

Too many idiots who don't get the vaccine. Now every hospital is full.

I know this because I get calls all the time from smaller hospitals to transfer their patients to us. Some of these places are several hours away and across state lines. It's always the same story.... I ask why us so far away, and they say we're the 6th or 7th place they've tried and everywhere it's full.

So just think about that. Sure a vaccinated person will be fine and an unvaccinated person is playing Russian roulette and mainly hurting themselves. But now our ICU is over half filled with covid.... Mostly young people. And we don't have rooms to take care of non covid critically ill people who are stuck at small rural ERs or rural hospitals and cant get the care they deserve. I guarantee you people are dying this way. Just today I moved mountains to bring in this 50 something year old lady who was sitting in a rural ER for days, grossly mismanaged by some NP, and about to die.

Every major hospital in a 400 mile radius seems to be full.

Im also getting non stop calls from outside hospitals calling to get their young covid patients to a large center like ours and we don't have any beds or any more ecmo machines available.

And 100% of these young people are unvaccinated.

One of the attending physicians posted on Facebook urging people to get the vaccine and literally our own nurses in the icu responded to it about how the vaccine doesn't work and the government is lying to us about how it works and they never tested it properly.

It absolutely blows my mind. I wouldn't care as much but what bothers me is that now we're getting so many covid cases filling up our ICU it blocks beds for people with other critical illnesses. And covid patients in the icu stay for at least a week if not months at a time. It's a long disease course when they are critically ill and some of the most resource demanding patients.
