It removed the GTS with no alternative and the online features are actually not functional.

With the Switch allowing you to create multiple user profiles and each profile being able to have its own save file, you could easily abuse the GTS to trade between save files on your own Switch (especially to farm Mystery Gift events). So that's probably one reason for not having it. Although doing this requires both Switch user profiles to have an active NSO subscription, so it's not very practical in theory to do.

But another reason is that they will probably lock the GTS behind a Pokemon Home pay wall instead. This will mean you'll have to pay for a Pokemon Home subscription (or maybe a one-time purchase) to have access to a trading feature that functions like the GTS.

Remakes/Remasters poll today:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7836-

Of particular note is Resident Evil 2 not being in this poll. This suggests that Allen doesn't consider it to be a proper remake and would also imply that it should be allowed into the next GotD contest. However, Link's Awakening did make this poll, which would provide possible evidence of being disallowed in GotD.

There have been loads of polls showing that an overwhelming majority of GameFAQs play numerous new games per year, we can stop repeating that they don't now. Though that does make the site's obsession with the 90's even more alarming.

I think what's hurting modern game strength is also the rise of indie games during the 2010s. This means you have more games competing for our time spent playing games. As a result, the biggest games struggle to get high playrates (for a modern game, anything above 50% playrate is considered high) and you need high playrate to make up for the lack of nostalgia on any modern game.

Disco Elysium doing only slightly better in today's poll compared to the PC poll could be explained by Disco Elysium being a PC exclusive for now. The game is scheduled to come out on PS4 and Xbox One sometime this year, but it remains PC exclusive at the time of the GotY polls. That really hurts it in a poll where most of the games are multiplatform.

People just whine a lot about that first point and start looking for every little thing to complain incessantly about because they're still mad about the lack of national dex.

Even though the games are already out, people are still spamming #BringBackNationalDex on pretty much every tweet made by the Pokemon official twitter account. Even on tweets unrelated to the games, such as those related to the TCG and anime.

It really feels like people are misusing the #BringBackNationalDex hashtag to complain about other issues with the games besides the Pokedex cuts.

Looks like this year's Mobile poll will end up with better vote totals than last year's Mobile poll. Last year's poll had only 4007 votes with the top game being Dragalia Lost, with Fortnite and PUBG Mobile as the second and third place games. This year's poll doesn't look as strong on paper (due to 2 less games compared to last year), along with lacking Pokemon Masters, but it's still on track to beat out last year's poll in vote totals.

Last year's poll had 466 votes at the end of the first hour, while this year's poll has 534 votes by the same point in time. At the very least, we are expected to get at least 4500 votes and might even break 5000 as well.

The only Metacritic score I see for Pokemon Masters and Mario Kart Tour are for the iOS version of the game. In fact, Pokemon Masters has a slightly higher Metacritic score than Mario Kart Tour and doesn't make it into this poll. Pokemon Masters has a 62 Metacritic score, compared to a 59 for Mario Kart Tour.

RE2 could literally win 4 polls during this entire set of GotY polls, and that isn't even counting the overall GotY poll (or any Final Vote polls). This is assuming RE2 makes it into the Remasters/Remakes poll. Once you include the overall GotY poll or any of the Final Vote polls, RE2 might be able to win as many as 5 or 6 polls.

RE2 winning so many polls is bad because it means having to pull some of the second place finishers from some of these polls to be included in the overall GotY poll. Otherwise, we would have far less than the 8 games that would normally appear in the overall GotY poll.

As we've had for the last 3 years of GotY polls, there should be a Remasters/Remakes poll this year, so CTR didn't really have a need to be in the PS4 poll when it could have been held back for the Remasters/Remakes poll.

At least Mortal Kombat 11 made it into a poll, but the lack of KH3 sucks because it might have decent strength for this year (along with appealing to the GameFAQs audience).

RE2 made it into another poll again, so KH3 would have had a difficult time winning this poll even if it had been included here.

Prior to the Wii U, the problem with friend codes is that they didn't send a friend request to the other person, meaning both you and the other person had to add each other to become friends. On the Switch, adding someone through their friend code will give them a friend request, and they can easily approve you without knowing your friend code.

Seems like the answer for Link's Awakening is "significantly weaker than the original". Three Houses would have already gotten trashed pretty badly by the original Link's Awakening, so the remake is another step down from whatever strength Three Houses would have in a contest.

With another year completed, I can provide an update on the status of our vote totals.

This was our first year since 2009 where our vote totals dropped by less than 10% compared to the previous year. Before 2019, we had 9 straight years of vote totals dropping by more than 15% compared to the previous year, which I thought was probably unsustainable and would eventually level out at some point. We are not at the point where I can safely say for certain that vote totals have finally stabilized. I need to see at least 2 full years of fairly stable vote totals before I can make that call.

The wiki page on this subject has also been updated as well:

Actually, MK11 is missing, too. Is Allen planning to put them on the 360 poll because it's got nothing else going for it?

This is possible, I suppose. Even then, it would do worse in the Xbox One poll than the PS4 poll (though it'd probably lose to RE2). We've seen in the past that most voters only vote for a game on the system poll that matches the system they played it on. This means that those who played KH3 on PS4 poll would only vote for it in the PS4 because that was the system they played it on, while very few would actually cross over and give it a vote in the Xbox One poll as well.

KH3's chances of winning the Xbox One depends on whether RE2 or Sekiro make it into the Xbox One. Out of the games which could appear in the Xbox One poll, the main competition would be Gears 5 and Borderlands 3. Gears 5 probably does poorly, though.

Also no KH3 huh

That's really weird because it isn't like KH3 was a disappointment when it comes to the Metacritic score. Here were the Metacritic scores for all of the games in today's poll:

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - 83
Control - 82
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled - 83
Death Stranding - 82
Devil May Cry 5 - 88
Outer Wilds - 82
Resident Evil 2 - 91
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 90

For reference, Kingdom Hearts III had an 83 Metacritic score, which was higher than 3 of the games in this poll (and tied with 2 others). So it's really difficult to pin down an exact reason for its exclusion from the poll. I also looked at GameFAQs user ratings (another metric used by Allen for these polls) and Kingdom Hearts III had a 4.00 / 5 user score, which was higher than 4 of the games in this poll.

Hard disagree. It's an early-year release (so more time for people who didn't love it to forget about it) that's not quite in GameFAQs' wheelhouse and that some people simply won't vote for no matter how much they loved it, because it's a remake. I still think Three Houses is the easy favorite in neutral circumstances, while RE2 will likely score second.

Looks like being an early year release simply didn't matter for RE2 in this poll. It's easily beating down the second place game here. I guess this was such a weak year for games overall (especially on the PS4) that it didn't matter that RE2 was an early year release.

I was able to use a currently running Japanese Mystery Gift code event to get a Beast Ball prior to the post-game.

It also took longer than I expected to get a Modest or Timid nature on Eternatus, but I ended up getting Timid on back to back attempts (the first one had poor IVs on the non-31 stats). I eventually settled on keeping one that had 19/31/21/31/31/31 IVs, as getting 5 IVs would already be a huge challenge without the ability to control the nature with Synchronize.

Back in early October, an update to the game added "Multiplayer with Friends" to the game. It supports both Multiplayer Versus and Multiplayer Co-op. Most of us would prefer Multiplayer Co-op if we can get a multiplayer session going, but Multiplayer Versus is an option if there's any interest in that.

If we do Multiplayer Co-op, the preferred level difficulty should be Expert. I think that provides the right balance between getting a decent challenge in Co-op without being too difficult (since Super Expert is more likely to have unbeatable levels in a Co-op setting).

Here's an explanation for how Multiplayer with Friends works:

One person acts as a host, and up to 3 other people can connect to the host to play in a lobby. The host will need to add all of the people to his/her Switch friend list who want to play with the person hosting a lobby. The host has the ability to set the game mode (Multiplayer Versus or Co-op), level difficulty, and also has the option to play any levels that he has downloaded or created. The lobby may also be password protected, but I don't see much use for that when other people still have to be friends with the host anyways.

For those interested in acting as a multiplayer host, please provide the following information when posting in this topic:

Switch Profile Name -
In-Game Name -
Switch Friend Code -
Connection Type (Wired or Wireless) -
Max Download Speed -
Max Upload Speed -

The information regarding your internet connection is mainly to help identify potential candidates to act as the host. The ideal candidate to host should be based in North America since that region makes up a good majority of our board's userbase. Depending on how many people are interested in doing a multiplayer session, we could also have a second person hosting a different lobby in the event we have more than 4 people who want to play together.

I have not decided on a specific date for when we should host the multiplayer session, other than avoiding December 24th/25th because of Christmas. If I had to choose a date, I would recommend Friday or Saturday night at some point between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM EST.

Gigantamax Snorlax GET!

Managed to pull off a successful 5 star raid using only the AI supports. I ended up with a Lax nature and Gluttony ability on the Snorlax.

I went out of the box with my Pokemon choice for this raid by going with a Skill Link Cloyster equipped with Choice Band. The advantage of a 5 hit move is that when a shield is up, the first hit takes out 1 bar of the shield while the remaining 4 hits can chip away at Snorlax's health if the shield hasn't been taken down yet.

Cloyster's absurd physical defense also allows it to easily tank anything Snorlax could use against it, so that was another positive aspect in its favor for this specific raid.

Meltan and Melmetal are not capable of breeding, so you can't get more Meltan that way. Meltan also has no possible evolution method in Sword/Shield, as it can only evolve in Pokemon Go.

So the only way Meltan can be obtained in this game is through a Mystery Gift distribution or being made available through raids. They'll probably make it available through raids in the future.

it's bizarre how people latched on to her of all pokemon. I get Gardevoir, Lopunny and Braxien, but Hatterene? what is up with this fanbase

Hatterene has an overall body shape similar to Gardevoir, if you ignore the actual body being really small (once the clothes have been removed). But the most important thing was the Psychic/Fairy typing, which it shares with Gardevoir. Both of those factors led to the obvious comparison to Gardevoir.

Drednaw > Chewtle

Chewtle looks kind of dumb to me, but Drednaw is a significant improvement over Chewtle.

Hopefully this update will get some people on this board back into Mario Maker again. We still haven't managed to organize a multiplayer gaming session for Super Mario Maker 2 yet, despite the existence of Multiplayer with Friends for the past 2 months.
