Or RE4 overlapped more with BG3 than expected.

Probably, that sounds like a reasonable explanation for BG3 winning. TotK needed a minimum of 88% of Wonder's votes to win if RE4 went 50/50 for both games.

Almost certainly RE4's votes went more to BG3 over TotK.

TotK still hasn't won a single hour over BG3 during today's poll or yesterday's poll yet.

BG3 got 55.67% on TotK in yesterday's poll, so today's performance is an improvement for TotK. Wonder being gone means no more LFF to hold TotK back, but the LFF seems to be very minimal at best in the 4-way poll.

At the 6 hour mark in this poll, BG3 is ahead of TotK by 154 votes. In yesterday's poll at the same mark in the poll, BG3 was ahead by 218 votes despite that being a 4-way poll (although with some LFF from Wonder).

Today's poll is also 65 votes ahead of yesterday's poll at the 6 hour mark.

TOTK got thoroughly rocked the entire poll, falling to win a single hour over BG3.

BG3 started out terribly at the start, but improved significantly overnight and maintained it for the rest of the poll. Weirdly enough, RE4 had a good board vote and Power Hour, but that was mostly at the expense of BG3's horrible start.

Either way TotK is getting rocked by BotW. Makes me wonder how many Zelda games fit between them.

TotK really dropped a big turd with today's showing. It's probably one of the weakest mainline console Zelda games, ahead of only the likes of Zelda 1, Zelda 2, and Skyward Sword. I think even TP would rock TotK in a direct match-up between the two.

With the lead at 228 right now, I'd say BG3 has today's poll in the bag. That lead is too high for TotK to overcome with these vote totals.

Still hoping for a 1v1 poll tomorrow to see what the result would be without Wonder involved.

I am surprised Mario Wonder is ahead of RE4 for third place here, even with a Zelda game in this poll. Pretty sure no one before today was predicting Mario Wonder to be our third strongest game of the year. If that midyear GotY poll is even somewhat reliable, then FFXVI would be ahead of Mario Wonder for third place in this poll if it didn't get snubbed.

Ngamer posted...
I'm glad we have a ticket in, but I think it will go over better if we could give a full list of 8 snubs to run in a complete "extra games" poll.

So... what are the five biggest misses so far, after FF and Jedi and Hogwarts?

I guess you can throw in Super Mario RPG as another snub as well.

The easiest way to avoid big name snubs is to simply increase the size of each seasonal poll to 10 games (instead of 8).

For reference, the Metacritic scores for today's games:

92 - Super Mario Bros. Wonder
90 - Marvel's Spider-Man 2
89 - Alan Wake II
89 - Slay the Princess
88 - The Talos Principle 2
86 - Star Ocean: The Second Story R
84 - Forza Motorsport
78 - Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name

Super Mario RPG had an 84 Metacritic score, so it had an uphill battle to make it into this poll because this was a fairly stacked poll when it came to the Metacritic scores.

FFXV barely won GotY in 2016 as a game with an 81 Metacritic score. FFXVI had an 87 Metacritic score and was generally viewed as being a better game over FFXV, but it can't even make it into the GotY polls.

It doesn't help that Starfield isn't on PS5 due to Bethesda being Microsoft property now. So that limits its potential exposure a bit because non-Xbox owners have to play it on PC instead.

I don't like this format change. If your release date's too close to a powerhouse, it's just over for you even if you were also a powerhouse -- that feels more unfair than doing it by system/genre/new IP/remaster/whatever like most of our other ones have been. Also, they could have been doing this on April, July, and October the 1st but didn't (I suspect due to new leadership but still).

If there is a second-chance poll between the #2s and maybe #3s of these four seasonal polls ahead with the top one or two of that second chance poll entering the GotY-poll, that would help alleviate that for me.

Hopefully we get at least 2 games from each seasonal poll moving onto the overall GotY poll, because the next poll will have both TotK and FFXVI and you don't really want one of them getting snubbed from the overall GotY poll.

Another year completed, and it's time for a update on the status of our vote totals.

Year | Average | % Increase / Decrease
2009 | 85797 | -5.83%
2010 | 72588 | -15.40%
2011 | 56882 | -21.64%
2012 | 42981 | -24.44%
2013 | 36506 | -15.06%
2014 | 27323 | -25.15%
2015 | 21162 | -22.55%
2016 | 17492 | -17.34%
2017 | 14282 | -18.35%
2018 | 11360 | -20.46%
2019 | 10464 | -7.89%
2020 | 10483 | 0.18%
2021 | 9471 | -9.65%
2022 | 8362 | -11.71%
2023 | 7655 | -8.45%

The drop-off in vote totals from 2022 to 2023 was smaller than the 2021 to 2022 drop-off, despite 2023 being the first full year of Fandom's ownership of the site and Allen stepping down as admin. I am impressed the drop-off wasn't worse than it could have been as the Fandom era would likely be seen by our userbase as the least popular ownership to run this site.

Looks like "Winter" in the context of this poll means a release date at any time during January, February, or March since DREDGE was released on March 30th. Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless was classified as a winter game release because of the Japanese release date being in January, while being an October release in the US, EU, and AU. So they're also going off the first ever release date for the game (in the case of Disgaea here).

I think the only days to never have a Contest Match (or Bonus Match) are:

January 1st-January 15th
March 22nd-April 1st
June 10th-June 30th
December 25th-December 31st

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7915-

That was from March 27th, and part of the March 22nd-April 1st range has been accounted for by the GotD2 contest. If not for a slight delay to the start of GotD2's first match, that entire range would have been covered by that contest.

February 29th is another date that has never had a contest match, since our only contest which covered the entire month of February was the 2010 contest. 2010 wasn't a Leap Year.

In the overall results, the biggest change from 2013 was Europe doing about 4% better, with North America doing almost 4% worse. South America has also gone up since 2013 as well, while Asia has dropped off slightly and Oceania losing more than 0.5% in the past 10 years.

Asia and Oceania largely have similar trends, faring best during the night vote and dropping off in the morning. Both options fare worst during the ASV. Asia has a less severe drop off in the morning and holds up better during the ASV compared to Oceania, which can be explained by Asia covering a larger number of time zones than Oceania.

Europe fares worst during the board vote and SNV, best during the FNV, slightly below average during the morning. Europe also has a poor ASV. Compared to the previous 3 continent polls, Europe has seen a significant change to its trends. For comparison, these are Europe's trends from all 4 continent polls that I have tracked poll updates for:

Time | 2010 | 2012 | 2013 | 2023
EBV | 2.44% | 2.25% | 3.21% | 7.93%
PHV | 1.98% | 2.99% | 3.25% | 12.01%
FNV | 18.30% | 20.50% | 23.31% | 37.16%
BSV | 41.24% | 40.93% | 38.90% | 20.41%
DSV | 15.78% | 18.08% | 16.65% | 20.86%
ASV | 11.75% | 13.47% | 13.14% | 15.60%
SNV | 2.16% | 3.36% | 4.73% | 7.69%
Final | 15.51% | 17.48% | 17.89% | 22.00%

Although Europe finished around 4% higher in 2023 compared to 2013, it failed to properly translate into a stronger overnight thrashing of North America. Europe's best hours in the 2023 poll failed to exceed 50%, when it had previously achieved a 50%+ hour in both 2012 and 2013. Europe historically did best during the BSV time period, with the FNV as its second best time period. The 2023 poll was a departure from the previous polls where Europe significantly beefed up its terrible board vote and Power Hour (though still below average) and also performing slightly better during the DSV, ASV, and SNV. The biggest change for Europe was a huge drop off in its performance during the BSV, but it still finished about 4% higher than the 2013 poll because it got better in every other time period instead.

In the hourly trends, Europe's best hours happened from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM during the 2023 poll. In the polls from 2010/2012/2013, Europe's best hours were from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM. This difference could be explained by the 2023 poll being a weekday poll, so the European voters are waking up earlier than usual. The 2010/2012/2013 polls were all on the weekend instead. Another oddity with Europe in the hourly trends is a huge lull in its early morning performance, before surging again during the early afternoon hours.

North America performs best during the board vote and SNV, and still has an above average Power Hour. It performs worst during the FNV, and has an above average morning vote and ASV. This poll being on a weekday has a huge effect on North America's trends compared to the previous weekend polls. On the weekend, North America holds up far better with the FNV, but does worst during the BSV. A weekday poll favors a greatly improved BSV for North America at the expense of a weaker FNV.

South America performs worst during the board vote and FNV, and best during the BSV, ASV, and SNV. South America's trends do not appear to be significantly affected by whether the poll was on the weekend or weekday like what was seen for Europe and North America.

We just had a continent poll today, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/9352-

A lot has changed in the 10 years since our previous continent poll. Before today's poll, I always suspected the Europe vote had increased during the past 10 years with a decline in North America, and it seems like I was correct. I'll post trend charts once this poll ends.

Thanks for hosting this project again. It was fun.

Gen 9 still has the 2nd part of the DLC coming up, so we should definitely wait for that to be released for a month or two at least. After that, I wouldn't mind doing Gen 9, but I'm guessing others would want to wait for Gen 10 to be announced in case there's another pseudo-spinoff game or whatever.

I'd prefer waiting for the Gen 10 announcement before starting the Gen 9 ranking. Assuming The Pokemon Company is sticking to another 3 year cycle for Gen 9, we could reasonably anticipate the Gen 10 announcement to happen on February 27th, 2025 with the Gen 10 games due for release in late 2025. There could still be a mainline game in late 2024 that might introduce new Pokemon, so I prefer if the Gen 9 ranking was held off until 2025.

I dont think GameFAQs as an individual entity is a thing someone could buy, its too entangled with Gamespot at this point.

were a subdomain, we dont get priced individually

I guess you'd probably have to buy GameSpot in order to buy out GameFAQs as well, as GameFAQs is on a GameSpot subdomain.

I've always been a big proponent of the theory that not purging the boards prevented a lot of conversation and community engagement, and I while I still think that's a factor, it was many different things. Looking back on it, the big drop off started in mid-2010, which is exactly the time that smartphones took off. Would a GameFAQS app have helped? Maybe.

That drop-off began in 2010 and is still in progress even today.

Actually Luster only mentioned "one rule 34 site". He didn't specify which one out of his several he was referring to.

Yeah, I know of 2 other rule 34 sites as well. And I couldn't specify which one it was... for obvious reasons.

If the design was just a LITTLE better (either more white or more red, instead of the weird 50/50 design), the speed and strength could've made this my top fave of the generation (despite the mono-typing).

Well, you should be glad that Cinderace isn't yet another Fire/Fighting type. One of the few times the mono-typing is fine given the alternative could have been Fire/Fighting (an overdone starter typing).

Zamazenta really should be listed under the Steel Rank (as should Zacian) because of its Crowned form. The Crowned form is Zamazenta's true form and the one used in marketing the games. We didn't know about the base form of Zacian and Zamazenta until after the games were out.

Inviso (59) - The UFO concept is cool, but holy CRAP this thing is exceptionally weak and slow. It stands out compared to other early-game bugs I've used on teams in the past.

Orbeetle is actually not that slow. It has base 90 speed, which is above average speed for this generation.

Paratroopa1 (41) - oh look, trans girls have yet another icon

Other than my write-up of course, this is like the second best one for Hatterene. And I'd certainly agree with Hatterene's color scheme being very similar to the trans flag.

I'm also very disappointed Para didn't have Hatterene higher.

Sorry to stay on the topic but I always get perplexed when people attribute Gardevoir to furries.

Gardevoir's rise to rule 34 success initially wasn't due to furries, but it getting popular may have then contributed to some furries doing their own artwork of Gardevoir.

ANOTHER feminine mono-Grass Pokemon

Grass type does have an unusually high number of feminine grass type Pokemon, second only to Fairy type in that regard. By my count, I'd consider all of these Grass types to have some visible feminine vibe to them:

Bellossom, Roselia, Roserade, Lilligant, Virizion, Steenee, Tsareena, Gossifleur, Eldegoss, Meowscarada, Dolliv, Arboliva, Ogerpon

Regieleki, Regidrago, or Kubfu seem to be the most likely legendary candidates to drop next. Kubfu has a chance of dropping next because it's an NFE legendary.
