3DS ownership drops to 70.11%. Less than 6 months after the 3DS set an all-time high ownership of 73.80%, 3DS ownership drops nearly 4%. It was expected that 3DS ownership would eventually drop off now that the Switch is coming up on 2 years old soon.

PS4 ownership drops to 68.88%. This result is pretty strange and could just be a case of random variation.

Switch ownership increases to 57.52%. If we ignore the 4.25% of the site that got their Switch on Christmas, that means the Switch only had an ownership of 53.27% immediately following the release of Smash Ultimate. That's considerably lower than the estimated 59% ownership of the Wii at the time Brawl was released.

Xbox One ownership increases to 27.29%. This is a very small increase over the previous poll. After Microsoft had a very strong E3 press conference this year, I originally said that their strong showing could actually have an effect on Xbox One ownership on this site. I did say that this effect probably wouldn't show up right away and any boost in ownership might not occur until sometime in 2019 or later. Despite Microsoft's strong showing at E3, the Xbox One has gained less than 0.30% in ownership.

I wonder if we will have a GOTD contest, will any of the games get a rally? The only one I think is maybe Deltarune if it is out by the end of the next year but even this is a slim chance.

The next GotD contest will feature the lowest average game strength we've ever seen in a contest. With the right round 1 match, any game with serious rally potential can build up rally momentum against nearly every single game in the bracket unless they're going up against one of the juggernauts like Skyrim, Smash Ultimate, or BotW in round 1. There are probably less than 15 games that could technically stop a game from building up rally momentum in round 1, especially when we will probably see even lower vote totals for this contest due to the site not playing as many of the games in the bracket.

Allen made a serious screw up in this poll:

Allen forgot to change the fourth option to say "2019" instead of "2018", and yet the option is somehow pulling in over 3% despite this error.

It leads to the obvious question: Can a rally ever happen again on our site? I think so, but this just wasn't the year for it. Simple as that.

I don't think Character Battles are the ideal type of contest for a major rally to catch fire. Fanbases don't seem to care about the characters to the same extent as the actual games they are from. Draven in 2013 was a rare exception. L-Block in 2007 was technically a rally as well, but most of L-Block's success was driven by bandwagon strength on GameFAQs.

I think it's easier for a fanbase to put their support behind a game than a character. The next GotD contest is a potential ground for a huge rally to take hold, as the average strength of the games will be the lowest we've ever seen in any contest. Any game with huge rally potential can build up rally strength against most games in the next GotD contest, unless it's put up against one of the juggernauts like Skyrim, Smash Ultimate, or BotW in round 1.

Send in your feedback tickets, boys. That contest MUST happen, and Breath of the Wild isn't as obvious as people think.

http://thengamer.com/guru/GOTD/stats.php?match=127

It is highly in the realm of possibility for Smash Ultimate to win that contest.

I would love to see another GotD contest. My preference is to begin the contest as soon as possible after the start of 2020 (once the GotY polls come to an end). Starting GotD in January 2020 means we would have to open up nominations around mid December in 2019.

Eligible games include all games with a confirmed North American release date between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019. Even if a game hasn't been released yet when the nomination form goes up, this eligibility rule won't disqualify any games that are scheduled to be released before the end of 2019. Although to be fair, very few games are released during the final 2 weeks of the year and what does get released are minor games like Mobile or Indie games.

Anyway, this match ended up being a bit of a snoozer when compared to other matches in the top 25. Importance doesn't equal drama. It didn't get as many votes as you would expect -- if I remember right, I think there was something with a redesign and poll placement having shifted during that? This should be the biggest vote total of all time.

I read through some archived stats topics from that contest and some people didn't like the redesign and how it changed the poll placement (being located farther down on the homepage). The rest of the contest suffered from reduced vote totals after the redesign. It would take until the 2005 Character Battle for vote totals to get above 100000 votes on a regular basis, despite an unchanged poll placement. By the time 2005 arrived, the site was pretty familiar with the new poll placement.

Seriously. The game was over-hyped and flopped in the contest, but WWF No Mercy is one of the greatest games of all time.

It also produced one of the funniest matches I've ever had to make a prediction for in the Oracle Challenge:

http://www.oraclechallenge.com/archives.php?contest=SC2k10&type=match&match=22

A minority of the board was hyping the shit out of WWF No Mercy in the last GotD contest to the point where they had the board very scared of the upset happening. Even those who thought the upset wouldn't happen were going low in their predictions. Even I didn't feel safe picking Fire Emblem in the Battle Challenge contest, but I still went with it.

Despite Board 8's wrestling community making up a very small portion of the total board, the amount of power they had in striking fear into everyone else was unreal.

Nathan Drake went from essentially a joke character to beating Pac-Man over a number of years. He did go up in strength and I assume people thought he kept it. Turns out he didn't.

Tails' win over Drake and Chief shows an overall rejection of modern Sony and Microsoft in this site. GameFAQs really does stick to it's old games.

I don't think modern Sony is in the same position that modern Microsoft is in. Sony consoles are quite popular on this site and there have been polls where Sony or PS4 has managed to outright win over Nintendo or the Switch, such as the following:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7430-
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7118-
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7110-
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7037-

I bet if you had a generic poll where you were asked "Right now, who is your favorite company out of the three major console manufacturers?", the results of that poll would probably be along the lines of Nintendo 52%, Sony 38%, Microsoft 10%. Sony is definitely no slouch on this site.

I would bet good money I'm one of the few people who mainly likes Lucina for how insanely cool she was in Fire Emblem Awakening instead of her Smash appearances, but who knows. She's okay in Smash, but she is a damn legend in Awakening. Top 5 series character for sure. Unfortunately she was against Auron, who does the brooding swordsman turned softy routine much better than she ever could and comes from a far more popular game.

It does seem like Lucina gets more of her strength from Fire Emblem than from Smash right now based on the registered/anonymous user results. Auron got 65.37% with registered users and 65.57% with anonymous users. Nintendo is generally quite strong with registered users and Final Fantasy does better with anonymous users, but Lucina struggled just to do better with registered users here.

Based on this, it seems like Fire Emblem is very low on the Nintendo hierarchy on this site. If Lucina got a lot more strength from Smash, I think we would have seen a bigger split between registered and anonymous users.

First off, I really like the format of multiple simultaneous 24-hour matches per day for most of the contest. It's the biggest element in allowing us to get through suitably large brackets without seeing them drag on unnecessarily, while also avoiding the 12-hour disadvantage of skewing results and practically leaving some time zones out.

Getting rid of 12-hour matches was great because vote totals were getting pretty bad by the time we made it to 2015, so we don't need something like 12-hour matches reducing our already bad vote totals even more.

MetalmindStats posted...
I really think some of us are overstating the role of an early evening match start (in the US) in killing trends. The truth is that, with the explosion of mobile phones, most people will pretty much vote when they want to regardless, and that alone has been by far the biggest cause of the sad death of trends. Next on the list, in my opinion at least, has been the remainder of GameFAQs' userbase aging and thus becoming more set in their tastes, as the Halo fans and the like have mostly departed. I would merely put the start time at a distant third, playing a minor role in securing the demise of trends. To me, the best start time given this is that which allows the largest portion of users to get their votes in within the first hour or so, which would be something like 2 PM PT.

I remember when matches used to start at 3:00 AM EST, which was pretty brutal back in the day as I wasn't able to stay up that late except on weekends and holidays. The 3:00 AM start time could help improve trends somewhat, as it happens when Europe is starting to wake up. This would allow Europe to give some characters/games an early boost before the US morning vote rush begins.

re: Luster's thing - I want the earliest 2020 start possible. As in, announce (on B8) the Contest is coming at the start of December 2019, have nominations going on the main page by the time GotY polls are happening, start the bracketmaking by the middle of January. That gets us in the middle of GotY excitement and "best game of the decade" lists other sites will be running around that time so it will be more topical, plus it will launch more hyped 2019 releases into the bracket which should increase the unpredictability even further.

Here's a rough schedule that I would like to see:

December 17th - Announce contest on Board 8 and open up nominations to just Board 8.

December 21st - Place a link to the nomination form on the homepage where it will be seen by the entire site.

January 7th - Take the nomination form offline.

January 10th - Release the bracket and begin the contest entry period.

January 27th - First matches of the contest begins.

The dates could be adjusted slightly depending on what SB wants to do, but that's a rough guideline of what I'd like to see.

I just got done listening to this episode. A few days ago, I sent private messages to both Ngamer and yoblazer with some possible discussion topics for the next Game of the Decade contest. They did talk about most of those topics at some point during the episode, but this was never really discussed in any way:

4. When to run the contest - Early 2020 (before April), or mid/late 2020 instead?

Relevant poll for this discussion - https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7428

The poll I linked to has some implications for a GotD contest. Looking at the entire history of that poll, we clearly see that a growing percentage of the site does not buy new games at launch anymore. The "on sale/used" option has also gone from about 30% in 2011 to 45% in 2018. The "on sale/used" option also had an impressively low 11% in 2002, so there's been a huge jump for that option even between 2002 and 2011. This means it takes longer for newer games to take off on this site, and longer for newer games to build up a large playrate. It could also be a telling sign that a larger percentage of the site is less willing to pay the full $60 price for a major game release.

Running GotD in mid/late 2020 could be a good thing because it gives games from 2019 more time to build up a larger playrate. Another positive is that any games from 2019 which have serious rally potential would be less relevant by the time GotD starts in mid/late 2020, and it would be harder to rally them.

There is also a case to be made for running GotD in early 2020. Major games released in 2019 will be more relevant at the time of the contest and they'll be more fresh in the minds of the voters, so they might do a little bit better than expected. The early part of 2020 will probably be dominated by other websites discussing Game of the Decade for 2010-2019, so running the contest in early 2020 allows GameFAQs to be part of this discussion. The contest might also get more outside attention from other websites if we ran the contest in early 2020 when the "trendy" thing at the time is getting into heated discussions about Game of the Decade for 2010-2019.

During the episode, Ngamer did mention that he would prefer an early 2020 start date for the next GotD contest, but he never discussed the pros and cons of early 2020 vs. mid/late 2020. I don't think yoblazer even expressed his preference for early 2020 or mid/late 2020 during the episode.

@Ngamer64 @CaptainOfCrush

I'd like to get your opinion on the issue of running the next GotD in early 2020 vs. mid/late 2020. I already laid out some pros and cons for each option.

What we should have done during the Thanksgiving break is run some bonus matches to keep the site interested. One idea I came up with is taking all of the division losers and putting them into a mini 8 character bracket. This allows us to run one match per day during the break.

If I remember the format for Games 2015 correctly, you still highlighted all the games and then submitted your final vote. The only difference was that you could skip to the vote button if you felt content with not voting for every match. I think it was easier for them to vote for everything at once, as opposed to voting Undertale, and then going back and voting for Life is Strange or Mario World which would require additional effort. That's another reason I don't think requiring votes for every entrant works out well, because I think a lot of them in past already operated under that assumption.

That would be a bad idea for the next GotD contest because we're dealing with games that generally have low playrates outside of the elite games in the contest.

In a Games Contest, it's much harder to sell people on the idea of voting for a game they never played, so this forced voting in every match on a particular day will be a bad idea. The casual voters won't be pleased if they had to vote for a game they never played just to vote for another game in a different match that they really love. Especially in the upcoming GotD contest, the average voter probably hasn't played all of the games in the bracket and some voters may be confronted with matches where they have played neither game.

It should go back to every 15 minutes. 5 is dumb.

15 minute updates might be better in this current era of low vote totals. Less variance to deal with when you have a larger sample of votes per update.

What happened to GTA? Yes, it's "not a GameFAQS series", but as was just pointed out, Vice City WAS very strong in 2004, and Vercetti, while overrated by casuals was a decent midcarder as well. Even CJ was probably above the fodder line in 2005. Then all of a sudden GTA blows its match to Warcraft in the Series Contest, and it's been all downhill from there. This happened well before the site's votals dropped off, and it's not like it reflects overall trends in the gaming community.

Vote totals actually went up after 2005. The 2005 Character Battle averaged just slightly under 100000 votes per match, but the Series Contest jumped up to almost 122000 votes. When the Series Contest happened, we were also just a few months away from the launch of the Wii, so the traffic to the site was leaning more Nintendo than it normally would have been before 2006.

I forgot to mention but that Brawl/Melee match was 12 hours and we've seen that the Melee fans are insane. They 100% would have rallied.

That's why 12 hour matches are garbage, but we got the win back so who cares.

And yet there was no rally attempt for Melee in that match. Reddit also wasn't nearly as big in 2010 as it is today. There was a Smash reddit back then, so I guess a rally could have been possible.

I would be very hesitant to take SSBB over SSB4 in a direct match. The match just screams rSFF assuming SSBB is even stronger to begin with.

I'm very skeptical about the results of that poll because of how it was worded. I talked about the difference between using "all-time favorite" vs. "best game" in the wording of a poll question in the following 2 posts I made:

Allen has inputted enough polls into the database to take us all the way up to poll ID 7469. This takes us all the way up to 1/8/2019. So we will have 8 days of GotY polls before the overall GotY poll. Although the System of the Year poll will probably happen after the Final Vote GotY poll (if we get one this year).

I haven't gone through and determined the full list of polls for the rest of this year (before the start of the GotY polls).

It's a shame SSBB didn't make it into the next Best Game Ever contest. I think it would have been interesting to see how strong, or weak, it was.

Yeah, that really sucked. And then I bet we'll see Smash 4 failing to make the next GotD contest. There wouldn't be much reason to have Smash 4 in the GotD contest because I see no chance it can even compete against Ultimate in a direct match.

Although with the next GotD contest having a fairly weak field of games (the weakest in any contest), I would give Smash 4 at least some chance of making the contest bracket.

But Brawl > Melee was still a great result regardless of the collateral damage. Might be the last time we really saw the board get up in arms over a result that wasn't caused by a rally or blatant cheating.

Melee/Brawl took place in a night match, and Europe was a contributing factor in Brawl winning because the first 2 Smash games were even weaker in Europe. At least the Wii sold better in Europe than the N64/GameCube, which may have been why Brawl was stronger in Europe than Melee.

Brawl was gaining percentage in the US during the morning vote, which would be a sign that Brawl would have won the ASV in a day match. Generally, newer games have a better ASV than the older game in a same series match. It's not certain that Melee would have done better in a day match, even with the lower turnout from Europe that favored Brawl to a greater extent than the US.

The sprite picture didn't even hurt Zelda that much in the match against Sonic. Zelda should have actually done 57.80% on Sonic based on Sonic/Snake and Snake/Zelda, but she only got 56.45%. That's slightly less than a 1.5% penalty for sprite Zelda.
