I wouldn't be surprised if most Americans didn't have a passport tbh. Travelling across the oceans is expensive and AFAIK you don't need one for Canada and Mexico.

Wait, what? I'm pretty sure I needed mine when I went to Canada. Or was that for when we went to the Bahamas...

Actually, wtf, did I have one when I was little and went to Jamaica? Hmm...

either a passport of enhanced drivers license is needed to go to canada. enhanced drivers license is only for land or sea, doesn't work for air travel.

I don't like leafy greens (though I like a good number of vegetables). I do lots of green shakes. 12 oz water, 5 oz spinach or kale (I rotate), 1 banana, 1 cup of frozen mixed fruit. not as good as eating an actual salad but I actually will have the green shake regularly.

circa 2001, working in a pharmacy as the front store manager

customer is pissed at the pharmacist because he wouldn't give him more drugs when his prescription expired.

customer goes to the front an asks a clerk to use the private bathroom
she lets him
he proceeds to wipe his shit all over the bathroom just fucking exploding it ever.

guy leaves
owner/pharmacist goes to bathroom holy fucking shit he is screaming.
girl who let him use is forced to clean it
pharmacist looks up the customer info, calls the cops
old dude gets charges pressed against him and gets a large fine, pays damages and like a weekend in jail or something + probation

girl who cleaned up the shit I let go home with pay for the rest of the day, pharmacist gets pissed at me and I tell him to fuck off, he just made a 16 year old girl clean up human shit. he realizes he overreacted (there wasn't a good policy in place for who could use the private bathroom and who couldn't since the pharmacist/owner would yell at the clerks if they didn't let his friends/good customers use the restroom and that was an ever changing cast). we then set a firm no one other than employees using the bathroom policy which lasted about 2 weeks.

so the way the argument was made, it made me think of one of the things that frustrates me as a tall and strong man.

there are things that I can do with basically no effort that shorter/weaker people can do but require effort. since we have all accepted that it is easier for me, I get times where people ask me to do stuff they are perfectly capable of doing but might take a bit of effort on their part. But because I can do it faster or easier it becomes my responsibility to help them. I think this is a natural reaction when you get people saying "yeah based on this aspect of me x is easier" there is an expectation you have to give more because of that thing you don't control.

does acknowledging privilege not teach a certain degree of helplessness

I do see what you're saying, but it's only part of the picture. Construction trades are heavily dependent on work, and there is much more work in the city. How many more opportunities to make money are there in Seattle than rural Washington? When I worked doing countertops and tiles with my uncle the winters were always shitty because jobs would dry up -- I bet that's less true in Seattle than in Jacksonville, Arkansas

true, I guess I was focusing more on the hourly rate. average contract in seattle is busy full year so long as they aren't really specialized (i.e. heating guys are busy fall to spring and not in summer).

the trade guys I know that are really good in rural areas are still busy full year but the average guy probably isn't.

Teachers get the same pay, some of the trades still pay well, pharmacists and medical stuff from what I understand still gets paid well, etc.

like almost none of that is true, man, and I don't know what the "etc" could mean here since there's nothing logically connecting those trades other than the fact that they all exist in both rural and urban areas -- and there's nothing that pays better in rural areas

e.g., with regard to teachers you have to keep in mind that localities have a huge amount of power over teacher pay so areas that are wealthier will have higher paid teachers. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/2017/07/26/texas-rural-schools-need-help-attracting-teachers-pay

ditto for health care professionals. rural areas are disproportionately covered by medicaid, which negotiates much lower payment schedules than private plans

for teachers I guess it does vary by state. washington state looks like it changed about 10 years ago so my info there was outdated but the state dollars still make up an average about 80% of the salary.

trades im talking plumbers, electricians, etc. wages are lower in rural areas but at least locally, its not huge. my folks live in rural washington, I live in seattle, I paid my roofer about 10% more/square foot than they did doing a reroofing the same year (2015).

for medical professionals
