If it's your first time discovering Tim Rogers I would also suggest checking out his series of FF7 videos where he compares the translation to the original text and also his Dragon Quest XI review that he references in Part 1 of this review

Tim Rogers put forth the idea that Keanu Reaves should be in a Fast and Furious movie and now I can't stop thinking about it

While I will probably go back and watch them all at some point, I will take his advice and pick two and watch the ending first.

Is the game actually patched enough to play yet

If you have a good PC it was patched enough to be playable months ago, although do note it is still full of weird glitches and bugs. That's just baseline. Though they've gotten rid of most of the gamebreaking ones. If you are on a not-as-good PC or console then lol and I wouldn't hold my breath as they keep delaying the "next gen" version.

I have a 2080 and I played a little at release and a little after the first few sets of patches, and it was mostly fine though I was still encountering minor but annoying graphical issues. Notably tons of pop-in and lighting issues while driving around. I played some of the current patch to get some more of the endings leading up to this review, and one of the characters in the ending sequence got stuck in a T-pose.

The game is just not particularly well-optimized, and at this rate brute forcing it with hardware helps a lot more than the patches will.

Edit: oh I did encounter one game breaking bug (the takemura dialogue glitch where his dialogue tree never ends) but I was able to reload and avoid triggering it

I'm watching all the parts in order, so far I have watched the intro, and stories 1, 2, and 3.

So far, it seems like a totally reasonable way to watch. I'd even say it is less redundant than the tokimeki memorial review.

If anyone is going to skip stories, I would recommend skipping 3, because it is pretty much just an explanation of the main plot and several side quests. So the Tim Rogers-ness doesn't shine through as much.

I mean, I felt part 3 served an obvious purpose of explaining the game for people who haven't played it and have no interest in doing so. For something like Cyberpunk, that's probably a lot of the audience. It was fine, he did have some pretty good observations even as someone who played through the game, he was off base on others...so yeah, it was fine. It was my first story so I can't compare to the others.

Also gave me the sense my thoughts on what I liked and disliked is going to match up with his pretty well aside from his Panam slander so maybe I'm biased.

OK just finished! Here is my ranking of the 7 stories:

#7 ("the bottom line") was awesome

#4 ("what I didn't like") was great, just good clean fun

#6 ("season of trash") was great, and weird as hell, almost too weird. almost

#2 ("the graphics") was good, especially if you'd rather hear about tim's PC than cyberpunk 2077 (and I do)

#1 ("citizen keanu") was pretty good, but not terribly interesting if you already generally know about the game's pre-release hype

#5 ("the point: the something equation") I liked, but definitely do NOT pick this one if you're only picking two, this is better as an intermission to the whole thing

#3 ("what I liked") I enjoyed, and I agree that it serves a good purpose, but it's not really what I'm coming to the channel for (mostly a plot synopsis)

---------

SO if you're going to follow Tim's rules and just pick two stories from 1 through 6, and you haven't picked yet, I'd definitely recommend #4 and then follow that with #6. (And then the required #7 of course.)

HOWEVER if you like the channel I strongly recommend watching all 7 parts in order, completely ignoring the rules. I still think this review has the least repetition of any of the reviews so far.

3 has one main point - the structure of the game's narrative. This is interesting but the decision to minutely explain the structure through just telling the story is really weird and seems a bit off-brand for what rogers normally does

gotta say I laugh every single time I hear the mario64 damage sound effect though

I am on episode 6.

Will say right now, after all the meticulous naming of having played every Cyberpunk game in preparation, if he does not even namedrop VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action at least one time in the remainder of this run then I will never watch a Tim Rogers video again and will be blocking him on YouTube and Twitter.

EDIT: Literally the next frame on the video after unpausing had a VA-11 HALL-A screenshot...but he hasn't mentioned it yet!

It's basically the same thing he did with his Tokimeki Memorial playthroughs although those are much better. Those were more necessary because almost nobody watching would be familiar with the plot. Same deal though, not really off brand for this particular video series.

Also I preferred it greatly to him summarizing the plot of The Last of Us with his own prose, which was bad! [MARIO OOF SFX]

Part 4 was my favourite for how he described his degrading into the V goblin playstyle

True enough, but there's a B8 topic every time Tim Rogers puts out a video, so I thought you might have come across him in one of those (although it's been a while since his last video).

Story #4 beated.

Very good! I enjoyed Tim's horrible playstyle breakdown, though I'm a bit disappointed about his mind goblin that prevented him from fully exploring other playstyles. I had a similar journey through the terrible skill tree, except the build I settled on after combing various guides was the Cool/Strength build where you get Gorilla Arms and punch everything to death with killstreaks while also being virtually unkillable due to health regen and the five MILLION consumable health trinkets you have on you at all times. This is amusing for a few hours, but much like Goblin Build turns every combat into the exact same solution. I have a sneaking suspicion that every build might be this unsatisfying, although I think Tim found the dumbest one. Pretty unfortunate because quickhacking was the game mechanic I found most interesting, but it seems like it was fumbled just as hard as the rest of the combat mechanics!

bumpo

I'm still working on my 100% clear. Watched 3, 4, 7, and went back to 1. Going in order to save 6 (hopefully the best) for last.

How do people who have finished feel about it? So far I'm still feeling a bit underwhelmed, but I still enjoy listening to the man talk.

I enjoyed it, but honestly it may be the least I have cared outside of TloU. Not because if Tim, the game itself just...isnt very interesting. I just don't care about Cyberpunk 2077.

Maybe that's the point, that such a middle of the road souless amalgamation of checklists was supposed to be a revolution in gaming but landed like a fart.

It's like the Netflix model rather than the traditional TV model. Some people would rather get 10 hours of content all at once to binge rather than having it spread out weekly.

I watched/listened to all of the stories over the span of two weeks and was pretty much enthralled, but yeah I do miss the lightheartedness of the kotaku stuff

if action button and bdg tell us anything, it's that if you're a games journalist / video producer with any sort of charisma/editing knowhow, patreon is the way to go. perhaps if the deadspin/takeover stuff hadn't happened we could've had kotaku tim for another year or something, but this was fated

The game definitely has a soul, it's just bogged down by everything else. Though even that is less revolutionary and more derivative, but that's not always bad. I do not know if that's Tim's point with making a bloated video because I have yet to watch The Points, but his comment towards the very end about how CDPR should just be making AAA "visual novels" is 1000% correct.

It's just...an obvious take. It's a point I saw coming for months just by watching his other videos and playing the game and having played Witcher 3. A lot of good but obvious takes going on for hours.

I mean, I guess this does give credibility to his claim that his review of Tokimeki Memorial WAS his review of Cyberpunk, because it kind of is!
