The FF7 one is like the Harry Potter one. I've never read the HP books and that was all over the place.

I can slightly understand the Samus argument but as others have said, it wasn't as consequential (i.e. not at all) to the game.

The Harry Potter one is a weird case because people were deliberately spoiling that one all over the place.

My argument against Samus is that I dont its that famous. Even though they know shes a girl, I dont think most people even know that that info was at one point considered a spoiler.

And outside of Smash fans do kids these day even know of Metroid?

Definitely the FF7 one

Samus is a girl doesn't count as a spoiler, especially now that Zero Suit Samus exists (in Smash even). A spoiler has to actually spoil the experience, hence the name, and knowing Samus is a girl doesn't spoil anything. It's about as much of a spoiler as "Mace Windu has a purple lightsaber", to link it back to the OP

Samus was referred to as a "him" in both the english and japanese stories from the manual. It wasn't just a player assumption, it was intentional misdirection.

Samus is a girl depends on how you interpret the question. There are definitely more people that knows Samus is a girl than end of disc 1 spoilers.

There are definitely less people that are aware that they technically know a spoiler because it was only a spoiler all those years ago and now it's just common gaming knowledge. So I would say it's not as famous a spoiler because of the many people that don't know they know a spoiler.

End of disc 1 then wins rather easily.

Samus was a major end of game reveal. It was intended to surprise the player.

It's common knowledge now just like Vader being Anakin Skywalker, but at the time it would have been considered a spoiler for sure.

I actually think it's a great comparison for Vader as both facts aren't considered a spoiler anymore.

I think there's a big difference between Vader and Samus, since the former actually impacts the plot, whereas the latter doesn't even remotely.

In my eyes, a spoiler has to actually spoil something about the plot. Something that actually changes things in a meaningful way. Samus being female doesn't change anything about the game or the plot whatsoever. She could have been a man, woman, robot, three dogs on each other's shoulders, pretty much anything, and it literally doesn't change a thing.

Would people consider "I see dead people" to be a spoiler? It is within the context of the movie, but no one coming to the movie these days would know that it is, like the Samus situation.

That line was in all the trailers, so it's not really a spoiler. The bigger spoiler at the end is fairly well known, but certainly not as ubiquitous as "I am your father."

Final Fantasy VII sold more copies than every Metroid game combined (not including Remake sales).

This is also true of every Smash game other than Smash 64.

I would categorizing Samus is a Girl as a 'surprise', not a 'spoiler'. Sure, it was unexpected at the time, but it didn't drastically effect your experience of the game. If someone told you about Samus before you played Metroid, the reaction would be "oh, okay". If someone told you about FF7 then they might actually get upset you ruined a major plot point for them.

I bet 75% of Metroid players never even beat it, that's why I would disqualify it. Also just feels more like an "easter egg" or a "secret" than a "spoiler".

+1 vote to FF7's end of disc one, I mean it's extremely close to "Luke I am your father", which is what the OP asked. Both of them might as well be historic memes.

Although ironically, I don't even think that's the biggest twist of FF7. I feel like a better twist comes a few hours later.

Just to keep some more ideas flowing though, I think I'd give 2nd place to Symphony of the Night's mid-game "twist". Among game players, that one is pretty legendary and highly regarded.

Although, people don't even care about spoiling it, because it's such common knowledge, huh.

That's a good one too, although I want to take away some points from MGS2, 'cause konami had already done MGS2's thing in SOTN years earlier: you play the prologue as the series traditional macho guy, then turns out, you have to play the real game as the blonde feminine troubled sword guy.

Is Sheik/Zelda still really spoiled by Smash since the characters split? I'm sure there might be some nods to it in maybe spirits or older smashes trophy info, but nowadays I think new players might just see Sheik and Zelda as completely separate characters.

Though there's also Hyrule Warriors which spoils it, and Melee & Brawl was already a lot of exposure.

As a fairly big Metroid fan....

Metroid is just a smaller series than I'd like it to be (specifically Metroid 1 was not that big--a lot of people start caring about the Metroid series only after Metroid II cause there wasn't much else on the gameboy in 1991 when Metroid II came out, or more often start caring about Metroid after Super Metroid because Super Metroid is when the series got really good). And while sure, the Metroid 1 manual refers to Samus as a he, starting from Metroid II onwards all instruction manuals refer to Samus as a she.

Maybe you could play through Metroid II without reading the instruction manual and be surprised at the end, but Metroid II's instruction manual was really cool--spent almost as much time reading that as I did actually playing the game. One of the best instruction manuals when I was growing up, can't imagine skipping it. And then by the time Super Metroid rolled around it was pretty in your face--Samus' gender comes up in the opening cinematic of Super Metroid (and also literally every time you die).

From my memory, in the late 80s and early 90s, there was more buzz around Rumplestiltskin's name in King's Quest 1 (literally had to spell it with a backwards alphabet), and the minus world in SMB1 than there was around Samus' gender. The buzz that existed around Metroid had more to do with codes that people found (JUSTIN BAILEY). Possibly I'm too young, but I don't remember much buzz around Samus' gender in Metroid I. (My introduction to the series was Metroid II, and while it was certainly important to me that Samus was a girl, I didn't associate it with being a spoiler cause the instruction manual refers to her as a she).

How to tell people you werent alive in the 80s without actually telling them. Like this isnt even a debate for the boomers here.

You said the exact same thing last topic and asked someone (tran, I think) to confirm and then they did not agree with you.

If anything, if you had to be alive to know it's a big thing, it's not the right answer. You certainly didn't have to be alive for "I am your father" to get the impact.
