There's something very addictive to me about watching Doom and Doom II speedruns, both the official maps and community-made ones, on the UV-Max (100% kills and secrets) category.

Yeah! So much manipulating enemy AI on the fly, and getting low on health, and cool straferun jumps, a bit of glitching but never anything OOB. Loooots of fast movement and skill!

Yep. I've seen outsiders complain about standard Any% runs of older FPS games because they can be really disorienting from the nonstop straferunning and switch hunting. Nearly every map from the official id IWADs can be completed in under a minute. But on UV-Max, most maps take a good bit longer and someone unfamiliar with the game is likely to get a better appreciation for each level and exactly what's going on.

I got the motivation to hook up my super Nintendo again and start practicing Joe & Mac speedruns. About a year or so ago I was about a minute off the WR. Time to grind it out.

No. At the time I hadn't heard of that site. I submitted my run to SDA, because I obliterated the time they have on there, but they declined it since I wasn't close to the world record...I dunno, their policy makes no sense to me. They don't want to put effort into updating runs on their site if there are better runs out there, even if those better runs are never submitted to them.

It's probably on my old external hard drive somewhere, although I'm actually embarrassed by it because one level in particular went so poorly.

Mine would be 3rd on the current list on speedrun.com.

if you have the third best run in the world it's definitely worth submitting, i'd say!

Well...I mean yeah. But if I'm gonna go for the record I might as well just wait til then to submit it.

this feels like a dumb question, but, does leaving a super nintendo running for long periods of time cause any harm or additional wear on it?

I've had the thing since '92, and had my Joe & Mac cart since, I dunno, probably '94, and they're both still going strong. But I wonder if leaving it running throughout the day would be putting it at risk.

The reason I'd want to do so is to be able to practice later levels repeatedly on the actual SNES instead of swapping back and forth between that and an emulator or having to beat all the prior levels every time I want to practice the later ones.

I have never or probbaly will ever see anyone who had more mastery of A 3D game. Yes Darbian and others are now within frames of the TAS's on SMB, but watching a human beat adult dungeons in OoT in minutes was spellbinding.... This is a 3D game where things like enemies are different everytime, and at one point Cosmo had something stupid like the 17 best times, and the guy who was #2 was well over 10 minutes behind him.... on a less than 4 hour run of the second most ran speed game of all time and the gap from 1 to 2 was just inconceivable

the problem basically is, they used to accept in situations like this, and enough people got pissed at them that they changed their policy.

You mean the people whose videos were getting replaced by better ones were getting pissed?

I've definitely made headway already compared to when I was last running consistently. I was on pace to beat my old time by about 30 seconds, and....my game froze during the last boss. :-(

Not concerned about the fact that I won't know the time of that run, but I'm concerned about the cartridge.

Damn, it's frozen during the last boss three times now....it might be fucked.

Yeah...it's fucked. It skipped the title screen a few times...which seemed...odd. then it just started randomly resetting while I was playing level 1...Like three times in a row.

Damn. I've had that thing forever. Of all times for it to suddenly crap out on me.

Alright well I just beat the game and saw the credits roll so I guess it's not a permanent hardware fuck up thing. Who knows. Old shit.

Cards in Baten Kaitos age in real time (so like food items will spoil, etc). One card infamously takes like a week of real time to age into its next version. I haven't looked at the stream but it's probably that.

Yeah Baten Kaitos has an item that needs to be aged for two weeks. However, the timer pauses whenever you are in a menu so menuing is very important. There's a lot of other stuff that needs to be done so it isn't like he's sitting idle for 2 weeks straight, in total he's playing for 37.5 hours

Edit: According to an old document he plays for 77 hours, does that mean he plays while someone else is playing?

Does anyone have any experience with a Dazzle DVD recorder?

I bought one last year to record runs from my SNES and it worked fine. But I just today got my setup back together and for some reason VirtualDub, the capture software I was using, doesn't detect it as a Video source. It does detect it as an audio source.

In Windows under Devices and Printers it shows up, as an audio device, with a little flag indicating "driver error". But I've gone to the website and downloaded every driver version that seems like it could reasonably apply to my situation, and nothing has changed.

Wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to invest some money into a new setup, but I was hoping not to.

Broke down and started practicing on an emulator. It's definitely paying off.

no regularity at all to when I play, but my two weeks of vacation just started so perhaps a lot

Thanks! figured out my issue

my first full run recorded on stream beat my personal best by 30 seconds and missed having the second fastest run by about 8 seconds.

apparently I should have started streaming ages ago!

had an audio issue with the first stream which I didn't realize until I watched the video. audio from my TV was getting picked up by the mic which made it basically unwatchable. fixed now with a mic closer to my face

new PB again, 21:39 (I was a little late hitting the last split at the end)

I'd say go ahead and publish. When games start to get new activity, that can lead to a resurgence in competition from established players, greater dedication to improvements, and the discovery of new strategies.
