One thing I have to say is that in many places, letting someone live in your house for free for even a few months gives them rights that make it hard to get them to leave. After a few years he could just be like nope, not leaving. Then you have to go through the eviction process... Which a lot of people are too embarrassed or lazy to do to relatives. I know that so, so well.

At the absolute least, get everything very very clearly written down and signed. Preferably talk to a lawyer first.

Yeah, that's part of the red flags, the legal ramifications of such an arrangement. But then there's the whole issue of getting money involved with family and that can get awful fast.

My uncle has ran into financial troubles, and the bank is repossessing his house. He has offered to sell me the house for the amount remaining on the mortgage, roughly 60% of the current value of the house. In exchange, I allow him to live in the basement suite for "a few years", rent free, while he gets back on his feet.

The price is obviously very tempting, but my lord, this is setting off so many red flags in my head. It's an awkward position, as I don't want to say no, but this seems like I'm setting myself up for a lot of headaches in the future.

Thoughts? Would you help out a family member in this situation?

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite. I figured it was finally time to replace my Kindle Keyboard. That thing has served me well these past 8 years, but it's not in the best shape anymore, especially since it got it's first crack in the screen over the weekend. That thing has been all over the world with me though.

That, and I really will enjoy having a built-in backlight. The light that was part of the case served me well, but it was never really ideal.

I dunno about Jens employer but in a lot of fields they actually have you agree when you take a position that you wont work for any competitors

Non-compete clauses are getting very difficult to enforce these days, as courts typically don't like them. They'll enforce them if the terms are reasonable (can't work directly for a client for x amount of time), but blanket non-compete clauses often get thrown out. It makes no sense to say "you can never work for another company in this field ever again".

In fact, basically the only type that is allowed these days are forbidding you from starting your own company and taking existing clients with you. They can put whatever else they want in the document, but the courts will just ignore it unless you did something really bad like sharing trade secrets.

I'm not gonna tell you it's amazing or anything, but I did enjoy it. It's also one of the few games I platinumed for what it's worth.

I didn't much care for the DLC though, mostly because it just explains things that were jarringly absent from the main game to begin with. And they were pretty darn short. Ignis' DLC was pretty dope though, even if, once again, it just told a story that I was really annoyed was cut from the main game.

Yeah. We hire a lot of new grads, and they often want to take a trip with their friends in the summer as one final hurrah, and it's not really worth postponing their start date by a month or two when we can better utilize that time for training them. So we tell them to start asap, and to take the week or two off for the trip, no big deal.

Just find a new job and tell them you'll need a couple of weeks before you can start.

Is that really something that's acceptable to do though? (I'm actually asking.) I always assumed it was generally frowned upon, and that most of the time when a company is hiring that means they actually need help then.

Yup. Happens all the time. Employers know that it's worth delaying it a bit in order to get the employee the want.

One thing that's very common where I work is we hire a new person, and then two weeks later they're gone for a week or two for holidays they already had booked. It's fine, you just need to be upfront about it.

My question would be... Why the fuck would anyone rent if you can buy a house for that? Even on minimum wage you could easily afford to buy instead of rent.

What middle of nowhere hell hole do you live in that a house is a "few thousand dollars"?

The main reasons most people don't rent out houses (besides not wanting the hassle of being a landlord) is that houses are expensive. Not exactly easy to own a "couple dozen houses" when that will cost you several million dollars to get.

It's a tough one. It seems if anything, a government position is most likely to be accommodating to it. If it were a private organization, there's almost no chance I would say yes to that.

This is my fear. It's a private organization. It doesn't usually affect my job performance but sometimes I do take a day off because of my depression but it's usually sick time or PTO. I am on medication now though so hopefully it wouldn't be as big an issue as in the past.

Yeah. Sometimes you get lucky and get someone understanding, but just as likely that you'll get the HR person that will toss it in the trash. I was in counselling for a couple months earlier in the year and I let my boss know what was up and they were fine with it, but I'm not sure how many employers are truly willing to risk the dice roll and dealing with that potential baggage right from the get-go.

If so, then put in yes. I'm pretty sure they would have good reason to let you go if you lie about it.

The concern would be not getting an interview at all by saying yes. It would be a very odd thing to fire someone about, you would have to really piss someone off for them to use that as an excuse to fire you, and they would have found another reason to get rid of you.
