I was applying for different jobs while I'm out on leave and I think one may have contacted my employer somehow.

My friend texted me to ask if I quit because they took me off the internal instant messaging system and they only do that if you don't work for the company anymore.

I have a second interview with a company I'm pretty sure wants to hire me today and another insurance company Thursday so I'm not too concerned about it.

I would think they'd contact me to tell me that I'm fired so I may not be. But my leave is approved up until the last week in July so far so they might be waiting until then.

Nall posted...
They shouldve asked if you wanted them to contact your current employer. I assume most would say no for exactly this reason.

I didn't even put a number down so I don't know who they would have called. HR maybe?

I do think know about where you live, but if you've been working somewhere for more than 3 months here it is super illegal to fire someone for something as silly as applying for other jobs.

At my company when I see presence unknown, it is generally someone who has left the company. However, maybe it does that if gone for an extended time without signing in as well.

At my job, I used to be in charge of various IT related items within my former branch office. When people would take leaves, Id need to remove a lot of the privileges and functions that employees had until they returned.

In particular, I remember that we once had a guy take one week of paternity leave. The entire process took like 3 days to get everything removed, and then he was back 4 days later. Our back office fucked up certain aspects of what was supposed to happen, and ultimately, it took 2 weeks to get everything back up and running for him. Twice the amount of time in which he was out.

Bureaucratic BS, I swear...

Yeah, they do that so people don't contact you via work channels, since you are not supposed to be working at all.

My company is worldwide and sometimes we have people take 3 month vacations and it looks like they quit. We're not supposed to contact them for any reason.

They can in general let you go for any reason, but usually NOT if they have agreed already to give you leave/time off and have you come back. Especially if you got an email etc to that effect (anything in writing). Of course they could have you come back and then fire you a month later etc, but that would still look bad and might get them in trouble if you really fought it (and had good reason for your leave etc).

They actually should fire someone else first if they need to cut back on employees just because it's less likely to cause a headache long term for them.

Never a bad thing to have other options and applying for other jobs is your right. Sadly in most states you can be let go for any reason at this point (or no reason), which means if an employer finds out your looking for work elsewhere, they can basically let you go for no reason at all, just generally not if your on official paid or non-paid leave that they agreed to already.

It'll seem fine until you walk in and are about to clock in, and then your supervisor or whomever tells you before you get the chance that they need to speak with you, and to not even clock in yet.

Bonus points if the reason they give for letting you go is some trumped charge that honestly should be possible, or is some other BS, or something.

Not trying to be a downer, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too much. That kind of stuff doesn't necessarily mean they want to hire you. Of course it doesn't mean they don't want to hire you, but I've been let down before by people sending overly positive signals. Personally I'd rather just get neutral signals, because getting rejected hurts even more when you actually thought you were going to get the offer. Probably doesn't apply to you though since you're really only just starting to look and haven't been crushed by years of disappointments

Non-compete clauses are getting very difficult to enforce these days, as courts typically don't like them. They'll enforce them if the terms are reasonable (can't work directly for a client for x amount of time), but blanket non-compete clauses often get thrown out. It makes no sense to say "you can never work for another company in this field ever again".

In fact, basically the only type that is allowed these days are forbidding you from starting your own company and taking existing clients with you. They can put whatever else they want in the document, but the courts will just ignore it unless you did something really bad like sharing trade secrets.
