Chips are definitely more common, if not universal, as half the time I go to tap, they try and tell me it's a chip reader and point to where I put the card in.

And then the machine beeps and prints a receipt and they get really confused.

Some do, some don't. Most merchants don't seem to support it afaik so it's kind of a moot point.

I use it sometimes. Merchants are supposed to set limits to prevent a they ran spending spree but I spent almost $300 at ebgames with tap and no issue.

My mobile banking app notifies me instantly when transactions happen. If my phone is on and I tap to pay, there's a notification on my phone the moment approved hits the machine.

I thought tap was going to be the next big thing. But nobody gave a shit like 8 months after it rolled out. All that is left is the feature on card readers that merchants don't known how to work, or care to work.

Even chip cards let you just pay without signing or a pin. You should set up notifications like foxx mentioned. Some banks will lock your card for certain behaviors like out of state or excessive perchases by default though.

Ehhh that old shit #_#.

I use Samsung Pay with my phone.

Basically I just walk up to any card reader, unlock my phone, put my phone in front of it. Then it pays

People here in USA always think I am from the future or some millionaire tech mogul xD

I especially love the ones who go, "Apple Pay does not work here."

Then I am like "Ya that is cool, push the credit button on your screen already please."

Then they are like "But it does not work!"

Then I lean over and press the credit button for them, and it processes and I say "Ok cool thanks, can I get my receipt now?"

That's surprising. It's usually set to a $200 limit (then pin must be used to reset tap) type thing through banks, never heard of anything over $100 being tappable.

It was surprising to the shop as well. They said it won't work over $50. I absentmindedly tapped and the transaction was approved before he could cancel it.

We do that too, and it's hilarious (since I'm sure some people reading your comment may not know how Samsung Pay lets you mimic a regular credit card, so it will work on most magnetic strips, even if they're not equipped for phone payments). Always have to explain to the cashier why it's gonna work.

Its makes a bit of a scene every time though.

Zero liability. Slightly less secure. Still miles better. Add in the fact you can only use $200 and it's a much more secure way to protect your money. They get your chip and say goodbye to all your money.

ok @_@....

But you do know like literally a few comments above you someone else with Samsung Pay has the exact same issue right?

It actually happens a lot, everyone knows Apple Pay, but no one knows Samsung Pay.

Apple Pay apparently works no where.

While Samsung Pay I am leaning into the fast food window saying "bring that reader over here xD."

The trick to make Samsung Pay work everywhere. Is just to disable NFC on your phone. Then it forces it to send out same signal as a credit card.

Literally everything that accepts a credit card, accepts Samsung pay.

But thanks to Apple Pay users. Everyone thinks your shit will not work xD.

When you "tap to pay", do you enter a PIN on the machine? Or anything? So in theory there's nothing stopping an attacker from carrying around a super beefy NFC transmitter/receiver and taking payments from everyone they walk past?

I need to learn more about electronics.

I probably have it on my Android but haven't bothered to use it. I've never seen anyone use it.

I mean I've had it in the UK for a few years now and I was sceptical at first too but I haven't even heard of somebody having those sorts of problems.
In the UK there's a 30 limit per transaction which seems kinda small but it's a little reassuring too.

It can happen but so can chip skimmers. Difference is the zero liability the companies have put on tap.

Not in theory, in practice. A guy in London travelled on the bus scanning people's pockets back when the limit was 20. Moral of the story, pay with your phone which only pays out when unlocked.
