I found the radio-controlled plane and flight school missions to be way more annoying and bullshit than the train ever was.

I agree on the radio-controlled plane one, I think that mission took me something like a dozen times to get through because you had to be SOOO accurate to beat it within the time limit. Even if you did the mission perfectly you usually only had a few seconds remaining.

Flight school I never had much trouble with, partially because the controls weren't so touchy like in the radio-controlled plane, but also because I grew up playing flight simulators on a keyboard as a kid. Playing a flying section with a controller is awkward, but I can manage (as long as the plane doesn't go wildly out of control from the slightest wiggle of the thumb-stick).

I don't think QBasic has anything like pointers, but it does have peek and poke which can be used to read and write to memory addresses. (which incidentally is very dangerous).

And coincidentally you kind of fell into why most programming languages don't let you do a lot of stuff with pointers. Don't get me wrong, pretty much all of them use pointers, but they don't let the user manipulate them since they could cause all sorts of problems. Like in your example above if I was to do this:

y = 30;

Now y is pointing to memory address "30", and I can do whatever I want to it. Or if I do something like this:

y = &x;
*y = 2 ^ 128;

Now I am writing outside of the boundary of an int and into whatever is using the extra memory I just overflowed into. That is why most modern programming languages handle all the referencing and de-referencing of pointers internally and don't give the user that much control.

My current job I got when a recruiter contacted me and said he thought I would be a good fit for, and he was right. Granted I had dozens of others before him contact me with crap I knew I wouldn't even get past the tech screening for, it is just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity and crafting your profile so it best describes your skills and abilities.

I actually had a discussion with one of my co-workers about it yesterday, and we both said that we ignored the "buzz words" and other fluff people put on LinkedIn because all someone is going to do is ctrl-f and look for certain keywords for the job they are trying to fill. Putting all that extra stuff in doesn't help for the most part because a recruiter isn't reading it.

Long story short I have been calling them up to cancel my service (because they are $10 a month more then the other 2 options in my area, despite the fact they were $5 less when I was with the company they bought), and for the last 3 times the following has happened:

1) Transferred me to the north west division who is unable to cancel my service (I am in the north east)
2) Got the "we are currently off hours" message despite the fact it was over an hour before they officially closed
3) Had the woman tell me I needed to talk to their sales department to negotiate a new contract then hung up on me

Gonna try calling them again tomorrow during my lunch break, but I get the feeling that it isn't going to go much better. I already canceled my automatic payments and notified my bank to block them from charging my account so they aren't getting any more money for me. This is just so I don't have to deal with some credit agency.

Another thing to consider is that for a long time YouTube wasn't making any money. Up until about 2015 Google hadn't broken even on its $1.2 billion purchase of YouTube, and during the whole "Adpocalipse" YouTube was loosing something like $2 million a day. It wasn't until they started focusing on a more corporate friendly model (the thing that people complain the most about YouTube) that they actually started turning a decent profit.

Now consider trying to start your own video sharing site WITHOUT a huge corporation shoveling millions and millions of dollars into making you popular. It may have worked 15 years ago, but it certainly isn't going to today.

Speaking as a Software Developer (but not a Game Developer), one of the biggest problems studios have nowadays is bad project management. If anything, Kickstarter makes it even worse especially when you are asking for money for a game to be released in a year, and include tons and tons of stretch goals to try and entice people to give you more money. That just screams not thinking about how much time and effort goes into making a game. You can't just throw more money at a problem and think everything will work out because there are numerous things that money can't solve in a software project. If a company is forcing it's employees to work more then 40 hours a week, then management isn't doing their job properly. They either underestimated the amount of time something would take or overestimated the abilities of their team members.

Does de-listing mean you also lose the ability to re-download a purchased copy?

Can't speak for consoles, but on Steam and GOG no. It just means you won't be able to buy a copy anymore. I own a few de-listed games and I can still download, cloud save, and all of the other stuff you would expect from a digital game. Only difference is no one can buy it.

And the thing I don't like about digital is that it's only as good for as long as the platform exists which, as we've seen with movies, is no guarantee. (Although UV users made out fine for themselves since I think all of their titles connected to VUDU.) I know that there's no guarantee of permanent ownership with physical copies either (breakage, theft, loss, etc), but it seems like it's more in your hands.

It usually isn't a big deal because most of the time you still get access to all your stuff, I can't think of an instance where a platform ceased to exist and everyone's library became useless as a result. Most of the time the games just become DRM free or get moved to another platform. People thought that is what would happen when Games for Windows Live went away, but all those games got patches that let them still work without the service.

I have got a notice for jury duty 3 times in the last 10 years. I swear they watch for the earliest time they can send me a notice and do it the first day they are able. Thankfully, I have never had to answer a question:

The first time I got a notice was for town court (which REALLY sucks because you don't get any time off of work for it unless you work a night shift since they usually start at 7PM). I actually had to go down to the court house because they don't have a "number", they just mail notices out to 50 people and pick jurors out of the pool. Thankfully both cases they were selecting for got settled while we were there, so it was just half an hour of my night wasted. The funny thing is the judge was trying to make everyone feel better by saying "well, at least you didn't have to go downtown for county court!" despite the fact I worked right across the street from the county court house, and it would have been WAY more convenient for me...

The second time was for county court, but my juror number was like 750, so I never got called in.

The third time was for district court, which is like one step below Grand Jury in the "This is just going to consume your life for a while so deal with it" spectrum. Basically they put you "on-call" for the next 6 months and can send you up to 5 notices for cases. They sent me like 2 notices, but I never had to go in for questioning on any of them because they all got settled before jury selection.

Come to think of it, that last one was a year and a half ago, so I am probably about due in a year or two...

Digital master race, right?

Digital is kind of weird in many ways...

On the one had, the games last WAY longer then they would in the physical sense, and no I am not talking about things like disk rot. I mean that a digital game will be on a storefront for years while a physical game will only be in print for a month or two on average. Even de-listing is kind of a rare thing and most games will be available in some form for pretty much ever. Also, digital games always tend to lower in value over time while physical games can go up and down depending on demand and rarity.

Then you get games like this:

https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/19000/?snr=1_7_

It has been on Steam for over 10 years, has horrible reviews, never goes down in price, yet somehow still remains on the storefront because the company who made it just abandoned it altogether.

For me specifically, electric razors just don't work. My hair is just too thin/fine so they don't cut it properly unless I go over the same spot several times, and in that case I am just better off using a manual razor.

As for Dollar Shave club being a reason... Gillette has their own service like Dollar Shave club, they have had it for years now. Granted, it is more expensive but a lot of people will say that the quality is much higher and worth the price. Their marketing plan was just poorly thought out, especially when their customer base is made up of people who don't really pay attention to the brand of product they are using, just grabbing whatever off the shelf. I didn't even realize the razor I had used from the time I was 14 until I switched to Dollar Shave club was a Gillette until I saw this topic and checked.

Nah, I had a bunch of posters, but they were mostly bands I liked. I think I had a Bush poster, one or two Smashing Pumpkins posters, an Offsping poster, a Greenday poster, maybe more. I also had a Ren & Stimpy poster. The only video game poster I had was the one that came with Ultimate Doom.

Doesn't seem like a lot, but I had a small room and I liked making sure all my posters were fully visible.

Edit: Now that I think about it, they are all still hanging up in my room today, as my dad hasn't done anything with my room since I moved out some 15 years ago.

TopicThose of you who have a job, what are your customer horror stories?

So in Software Engineering, customers are...weird. It is not like retail where literally any person off the street is a potential customer, the people we deal with are usually payed way more then us, way more educated then us, and as a result think they can do our jobs a lot better then us.

My first job out of college I never had to deal with customers, they were usually dealing with people several levels higher then me and I was only at the job for 2 years so I never got trusted enough where they would have me interact with the customer.

My second job (and the one I worked at for almost 12 years) our customers where law firms, usually the partners since they were the ones who bought our products. It was pretty rare that we would talk to them directly (although I was involved in a couple of conference calls with them), usually we interacted with them through sales people. Most of them had law degrees (but usually weren't practicing lawyers or be part of the bar in their jurisdiction), which meant they thought they could just know how complicated it would be to implement new features. What they didn't know was how complex the system was, or how much time and effort it would be to implement their wishes. It was even more frustrating considering I worked in the Machine Learning part of the system, so every little change they wanted for one thing could have a ripple effect on literally every single thing we processed. Trying to explain that to them usually took several meetings and hundreds of man hours to prepare for those meetings, only to have the work scrapped when their next big idea came about.

In my current job, my manager(s) are usually the ones who deal with the customers who "pay the bills", however since I am a contractor pretty much everyone except the 6 people on my team are my customers (and even person #6 could be considered a "customer"). That said, I actually don't have any real complaints about them other then the fact I feel they are under-utilizing me. Although I also understand that part of that is they have a lot of work "in the future", it just isn't ready for me to work on.

I haven't yet, but ever since I played Valkyria Chronicles last year I have had an itching to try more Strategy JRPGs like Fire Emblem. Might pick it up in a few weeks when I will have time to play it.
