Time or distance?
Right now, I think this is my longest commute of like 35 minutes, but I choose to walk. I've had jobs a little further, but would drive to them years back.

Where spouse works had to walk for a while and it was about a 30 minute trip for them.
Longer for me when I had to go drop something off, but since it was their commute not mine I'd say that's the time that matters.

Longest commute I ever had was maybe 10 minutes? Nothing bad at all. And being taken by someone else to boot because I can't drive. So couldn't complain.
(Except with on because person hated my guts and it was miserable sitting there knowing how much they kept trying to ruin my life behind my back.)

I think there are two tied at about 45 - 50 minutes, but the one when I was in Syracuse was longer (35 miles one way vs. around 30). However the other one sucked more because I was working 6 days a week at that one, and for longer hours. So basically I got home, had dinner, played video games for a couple of hours, then went to bed and did it all over again. Plus I was getting payed crap back then (but gas was only $1.20 a gallon). At least with the one in Syracuse I had time to actually do things during the week.

~an hour by car twice a day (more like 55 minutes)

that's right now. I don't mind it because it's on the expressway. If I had to take backroads with stoplights I'd probably quit.

That said, I had a job doing deliveries over the road (mainly around the mid-west), and I would regularly drive hundreds of miles a day.

right now is the worst commute I've had, I think. it's about 30 mins, +/- 5 depending on construction, slow drivers, and red lights. the longest it's taken to get home is I think about 1 hour and 45 minutes thanks to construction. (whatever dick contractor the city hired had the main freeway reduced to a single lane in rush hour traffic (or for all I know it was completely blocked off since once I hit the jam it took me over an hour to travel ~1 km.))

Daily commute or one-shot drive to a job site?

I used to live in Vista, CA and had to commute daily to Mira Mesa. It was usually about an hour, until they added a carpool lane to the freeway. Then it became 2 hours because everyone who was eligible to drive in the carpool lane had to shove their way across 8 lanes of traffic to get into the lane, then back across the freeway to exit a few miles later. Idiots.

Now that I live in Nebraska, I frequently get jobs in Grand Island, Sioux City, or Des Moines, all of which are about 2 hours one way. I had one job in North Platte, which is about 4 hours one way. Very little traffic, just long, long distances at 75mph (120kph).

this is fucking stupid. at what point do you sacrifice that much time for your shitty job?

literally 4 hours of your day is spent travelling. you're basically telling your loved ones to fuck themselves, you'd rather be anywhere but with them. if you have pets, it's neglect if you're doing a full work day + travel, ok?

why wouldn't you try to find a job closer to you, or more respectful of your time?

never mind, i know the answer, ok?

My average commute at my job was previously 75-90 minutes one way, depending on the time of year. If there was an accident, that easily reached above two hours.

It ultimately convinced me to give my job an ultimatum: let me work from home or I'll find another job. They agreed and my commute time has been about 10 seconds ever since.

I think it was a little over an hour one way. Though once, It took like 4 hours to get home because it snowed. We were pretty good about the snow up there, but it still moved much slower due to it being a high traffic time. Usually, going back home took longer, anyway.

I almost had a job recently that was about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away one way driving. But I ended up not being able to take it due to money issues...

There actually is something pretty screwed up about spending so much time traveling just to work, for a number of reasons. My 45 minute commute was the main reason I started looking for another job, and this new one pays slightly less and has fewer hours but the extra 80 minutes a day and Saturdays off feels so nice.

Maybe I'm "privileged" because I don't have anyone else to look after or any debts or obligations or whatever so I can choose to trade away money for time... but still seems like the priorities of a lot of people I've met on the general issue of how much time is too much time to work (commuting might as well count as "work") are off.

Move closer to downtown then. I could get anywhere there within an hour usually and I lived in McKenzie Towne. I drove at that point and wasnt reliant on transit but taking the 72 around was really terrible for the first month.

14 minute walk. Used to be 3 before our office moved. Then I moved.

Reading this thread reminds me of when I worked in the US and people drove interstate daily for work. I cant even fathom that here in Sydney - although I know some people who fly up/down the coast weekly and spend a few nights in each location.

There was an awkward stretch of a couple months where I was working downtown and living in Terwillegar, and the bus/roads are ill-equipped when there's bad weather. I started that job in winter. There was ONE bus line in that entire neighborhood that came every half hour and did a gigantic loop. The stops did not have shelters. That bus alone took 30 minutes to get to the train on a good day.

I moved downtown as soon as I was able. Now I'm close to everything. Work is about 12 minutes by bus with 4 lines that go by my job, all within a block of my place. Or I can (and do) just walk when I want to walk.

Calgary also has better transit :P

Sometimes, its about how willing you are to travel. I know people who commute to a different state everyday to work.
