Fortunately, I only really care that Disney+ has about 1/3 of the Simpsons, so hey, nice bonus I guess

I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but scientific studies don't just go "Hey guys, air pollution is bad, trust us. We talked to a lot of people and did stuff and we're sure of it." they explain their methodology even if they don't give you all the raw data so that it can be independently replicated by other researchers to see if they can get the same results. (Like the 1995 American Cancer Society analysis that confirmed the 1993 Harvard study, as an example.) If a scientific study refused to lay out how they did things so the study could be replicated... it would cease to be a scientific study. Like this is one of the first things taught about the scientific method. ...Am I wrong how this all works?

The Trump administration/GOP/fossil fuel industries are using the transparency argument as their pretext here... but I don't see how that flies here. It sounds like just that, a pretext. If they were truly concerned about the results being erroneous they could conduct their own study trying to replicate the results and showing it doesn't. Hell, the fossil fuel industry basically has made an industry out of that concept with climate change. Though I suspect that the fact that they can't just use that as an option underlines how they can't actually get a true scientific study that passes muster to accomplish even that so this is their play instead - to undercut the existing studies. Hell, the article even notes they considered a version of the proposal that would leave "foundational studies" like 1993 Harvard one alone and yet opted not to.

The actual hardest to spell gen 1 pokemon is Gyarados and I think it did ok in the list

Mipha: High Fodder. Don't really see the hype for the BotW champions; appealing characters from a popular game but they simply don't have enough reach to draw high vote totals. Could be convinced of fodder line.

Tron: Low Fodder. Nah

Mysterio: Mid Fodder. Don't think gaming and comic fans have quite enough overlap to make Mysterio a big draw here. Too minor a character. Bordering on low.

I was never gonna like Rillaboom no matter what they went with for Grookey because I'm really just not a big fan of gorillas. They've never really appealed to me.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I like things that are based on pretty much animal except apes, so Rillaboom doesn't speak to me at all.

The only things in this gen I hate are the mimes though. Everything else is at least ok.

Things might still exist in canon, but who knows when we'll see some of these things in a game again. Venonat's line and Stantler haven't been in a regional dex since Johto. Unless there's another Johto remake coming up, it could be a decade before we see them in a game again.

I doubt any pokemon will ever truly be retired until the franchise dies but they might go missing for a while yeah

Megas might not be permanently gone. Theyre still being used in things like Masters. As for Alola forms, the inclusion of Persian and Cofagrigus in the dex makes me think that if their base form is in the game, theyll be allowed to transfer, just like LGPE

Yeah, we'll see. I'm not 100% certain that anything is being retired for good, but it at least seems like there is a push in that general direction. The fact that megas are still being used is indicative of absolutely nothing imo since we're still in gen 7, gen 8 isn't out yet and obviously at least at first megas won't be in use because they flat out no longer exist.

Persian and Cofagrigus are oddball examples, because it's important to remember that we didn't get Galarian Persian or Galarian Cofagrigus, we got brand new split regional evos. It is possible that the dex will allow for Alolan forms someday but we'll have to see. Again, it just seems like we're heading in the direction of "nope." Obviously nothing to stop them from bringing the whole gang back, but that really begs the question of how much longer they intend to keep doing that when the resources necessary to bring everyone back can only increase. It's basically the same exact problem Sakurai is referencing when he says that Smash Ultimate's probably gonna be the largest roster ever and "everyone is here" is probably a one time thing - it doesn't preclude him from doing it in the future but these things can't continue in perpetuity, it has to end sometime as a matter of practical course. I think we're probably witnessing the start of this in Pokemon, and I'd be happy for this to be a freezing cold take in the future.

Speaking of end-of-an-era type stuff - is the Pokedex numbering system that begins with Bulbasaur at #1 officially retired now? Do gen 8 Pokemon have "national dex" numbers? Are we now officially in the Grookey era of Pokemon numbering?

It's bittersweet that for the first time ever we're in an era of Pokemon where things actually get retired - I don't think the Pokemon that are out of this dex are gone forever by any stretch, but at the very least I think it's probable megas and alolan forms aren't going to be seen again, which would make this the first time ever that a Pokemon generation hasn't included every Pokemon and Pokemon form from a previous generation (I think. if there's like one or two exceptions they're extreme outliers).

I think it's kind of necessary because the roster's only going to get bigger and I don't think it makes sense to perpetually devote more and more development resources to maintaining it - it's better to create new Pokemon than to continue preserving the old ones if it comes to it, and they did an amazing job on the new roster and didn't cheap out in the slightest. I do think it's kind of unfortunate how they've handled the whole thing though, since it feels more like an arbitrary culling of various Pokemon rather than a completely clean break and a fresh start - it would have made more sense if they didn't have transferring Pokemon from old games possible and such but that's still a thing, so Pokemon feels as beholden as ever to old choices made in the series while retiring stuff. Feels kinda bad, especially given that the 3DS being retired ends an unbroken lineage that dates back to the original Pokemon.

I feel like I'm probably not gonna end up playing SwSh - I absolutely adore the new Pokemon but I feel like Pokemon games have increasingly had less and less to offer to me as gaming experiences. I'm more excited to see the new Pokemon just as characters now, they're like, this canon lineup of cute creatures for use in art, merch, and memes. But the traditional games kinda aren't much of a lure for me anymore and it's totally unrelated to the Dexit nonsense, it just sort of coincides with me feeling like this is really end-of-an-era type stuff here, at least for me and my involvement in the series.

Still love the fuck out of Pokemon in general.
