The death penalty is completely fine so long as it's for a murderer, serial rapist, child molester, etc. and the conviction is supported by DNA evidence. DNA evidence is itself vastly more unreliable than people think it is, and the kind of "DNA evidence" that people use in court ranges from "has genuine scientific merit, but still carries a margin of error larger than people are willing to admit" to "literally just quackery" |

Paratroopa1 10/16/19 7:55:24 AM #37 | I've been to a couple restaurants where the policy is that they have straws and they'll give you one if you ask, but you have to ask specifically for it. Seems like a decent way to go, although you can't really legislate that kind of behavior, it has to be kind of all or nothing if you really want to completely eliminate the waste. Overall I think it's a good idea but it needs to be part of a much larger push to eliminate plastic waste. |

Maybe it's just because I didn't like Pokemon Go as much but thinking back on playing it in its heyday isn't really something I do a lot. I remember a lot of good times I had in my life that were indirectly related to Pokemon Go, and that's the stuff I have a hard time ranking, because playing Pokemon Go sort of turned into "you know, I should really just go for walks on the nature trails in the city more often", which I ended up doing without the aid of PoGo |

Paratroopa1 10/14/19 7:19:47 PM #57 | The whole thing about how the interconnectivity of the MCU movies ruins them as standalone films isn't really something I agree with anyway - the fact that they have that connecting tissue is what makes them sort of unique among movies, and I think it's something that has value for its own sake |

Paratroopa1 10/14/19 7:16:57 PM #64 | I was there for the early days of Pokemon Go so I totally know what you're talking about, but it's something I put more in the same category as like "Twitch Plays Pokemon" where it's like this crazy interactive experience that you kinda had to be there to understand how big a deal it was. and unlike Pokemon Go, TPP gave us like a bunch of memes and cultural touchstones, whereas Go has just not done that |

Topic | Do you side with martin scorcese or the mcu films? |
Paratroopa1 10/14/19 5:54:25 PM #43 | I think to imply that the MCU really lacks artistic merit is wildly reductionist, I wouldn't say any of them are truly the most profound works of our time by any stretch but there are definitely little moments and ideas throughout many of the films that I would say are worth viewing with a critical eye. A movie doesn't need to be the HIGHEST art to still have something meaningful to say and putting everything in either "true art" or "just entertainment" is kind of selling everyone short Also, I think people have a strong tendency to underestimate the amount of craft that actually goes into making something fun; that, in itself, is art of its own. Most of the films that people describe as 'popcorn flicks' I don't really find all that entertaining - anything that is 'turn your brain off' material ends up not being that fun. I think what makes the MCU cool is that it's particularly well-made fun, and there is a difference! Most movies don't really achieve the heights of entertainment that these movies reach. It's reductionist and maybe even borderline offensive to dismiss both the vision of a director and performances of actors who know how to actually make something fun instead of just boring, as well as the extremely high levels of craftsmanship that thousands of people put into making these things work. |
Topic | Paste magazine put out their top 100 games of the decade and it's... interesting |
Paratroopa1 10/14/19 4:57:50 PM #56 | It seems like this is kind of just a single person's list? Which explains some of the weirder choices, but then doesn't explain why a lot of the list does seem very 'consensus', which kind of threw me I'm surprised given the author's predilections that neither The Witness or Her Story made it on to this list, those were two like huge conceptual standouts in the indie scene in the last decade |

Topic | Paste magazine put out their top 100 games of the decade and it's... interesting |
Paratroopa1 10/14/19 4:36:13 PM #53 | Pokemon Go always making this lists sort of mystifies me in a way It's certainly one of the biggest cultural experiences of the decade, and I do think it's a fun activity that encourages people to go outside, and it's one of the most interesting technological concepts for a game to date - but the game itself is boring and really just feels like a list of stuff to collect with a presentation that is close to as clinical as possible I don't really know how to rate something like that. Maybe I just need to change my thinking on what makes a game 'good', but for me it just wasn't worth spending that much time with, and holding it up to a bunch of games with stronger craft and auteurism behind them just seems really strange to me I don't feel the same way about stuff like Minecraft and Fortnite mind you, I'm too old for that shit but it clearly belongs on a game of the decade list |
Topic | Do you side with martin scorcese or the mcu films? |
Paratroopa1 10/14/19 2:37:33 AM #14 | I think many of the MCU films, even in areas like having smartly written themes and portrayal of three-dimensional characters, show a lot of craft, much more than the average summer blockbuster, which is why this opinion is frustrating - it's just pointlessly and crudely dismissive without displaying any sort of deeper insight I just really don't think there's anything enlightened about dismissing the things they do out of hand because you think they're popcorn flicks I've seen some far more "grown-up" movies that really weren't, comparatively |

Paratroopa1 10/13/19 11:21:14 PM #6 | Nrrr posted... Paratroopa1 10/12/19 6:22:06 PM #456 | I think mc is missing the fact that this post IS written in english. It's not, like, a sloppy translation where the grammar is incorrect; the person who wrote this is what I would describe as fluent in english. But they are not native in english, and there are certain choices of phrasing that make that clear to me, things that are "technically correct" but are not the way I would write something. The biggest 'smoking gun' for me is this paragraph: "But playing fair also includes appropriate pre-and post-match conduct, especially when a player accepts recognition for winning in a broadcast. When we think about the suspension, six months for blitzchung is more appropriate, after which time he can compete in the Hearthstone pro circuit again if he so chooses. There is a consequence for taking the conversation away from the purpose of the event and disrupting or derailing the broadcast." Nothing in this paragraph is incorrect so to speak, but there are two things that stand out to me here. 1) "When we think about the suspension..." It's really difficult for me to pinpoint the exact reason why this phrasing is odd, but it is, and I just know it when I see it. If I were writing a formal statement like this, I would probably start this sentence as something like, "after further consideration..." Starting this out as "when we think" clearly comes across to me as someone who learned a slightly odd way of saying things. Something about the tense is just wrong here. 2) "There is a consequence..." No, there are consequences. Again, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly why this is wrong, but the phrasing here clearly would be "there are consequences." It would not occur to me to say "there is a consequence." It might slip out in casual conversation as a result of me conjuring up words in a slightly disjointed order, but it wouldn't occur in writing. I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, but I have seen a lot of words before, and I've seen enough words written or spoken by people of other linguistic backgrounds to know it when I see it. This isn't a knock on people who only know english as a second language, since the subtleties here are so precise that I can't even describe WHY they are the way they are, but it just... is. I don't even know what I should take away from any of this I just think it's neat |
