It was funny for me to try and find something. You picked up most of the things I would have suggested already when you read my old anime ranking recently. But there were also a bunch that seemed like good kateee shows, but inevitably you'd already dropped them after one or two episodes, lol. Keijo seems like something you should enjoy, too, but even it got dropped after two episodes.

I guess I'll go with Dark Gathering for my nomination. I watched it after my ranking that you read, but it's my new #2 of all time.

Eh, instead of duplicate picking Planetes I'm just going to compare our lists and see what comes up.

After eliminating my 10's and 9's that you've already Completed, Dropped, or are a movie/short, I'm left with I think four options. Safest pick between them is probably Sakamichi no Apollon.

iirc the ones i picked up after reading your list and finished so far were Akudama Drive, the time stop one with wood creatures, and Lost Song.

i think i have like 5 more on my currently watching that haven't been dropped yet. even the ones i dropped weren't bad necessarily. like with the snow white show. it seemed very sweet. but i wanted something more off the wall and zany

I was going to say gunbuster but that's on your ptw anyway... and a few of my backup initial rec considerations are in your drop list (rip aria, initial d, id invaded and one or two others). i also thought about rakugo shinju but i see s1 was already watched and it feels a bit cheap to recommend s2, so i guess i'm pivoting to something... i doubt will appeal as much, but I just want to see more people watch lol

WIXOSS (the selector series... which does have a movie but still)
it's probably the last okada mari series i can say i definitely enjoyed

(i also nearly picked anime-gataris too but saw that was also in ptw. it's definitely a hard rec anyway since the appeal is the depth of all the meta references it's packed with, as it doesn't really have a very good cast and the presentation was incredibly subpar for the time since it was a passion project from a very obscure studio with minimal experience. i hope it's given a fair shake if/when you do get around to it since i LOVE the show's twist later in)

ran out of edits and had one more thing to add about this lol, to put it a better way, i think anime-gataris is a series that is probably more fun to spend time dissecting what was in it than actually watching it lmao. it just has the most "approximations of specific other anime/otaku media" in any anime i've seen even now, and then comes packed with the most niche general references to other series too (combining them, there are probably in the ballpark of 50 per episode lol, and it could well be more factoring in all the seiyuu meta references). it's a pretty neat contrast how the characters are all just outdated and largely obnoxious stereotypes, but are also written to have weirdly authentic interactions sharing their feelings on all sorts of other actual media. plus there's just weird hidden lore all over it, like the random crunchyroll translator notes hidden in the files that were just for taking personal notes on all of the references (and giving all the characters joke names lol).

honestly that sounds waaaaay more interesting than wixoss. especially if the draw for wixoss is that it's a mari okada show...lol

i will say that selector wixoss's real draw is "it's literally the madoka of card games" so i do think you might like it more... but yeah animegataris also rules and if you weren't already planning to check it i would've picked it lol. (plus it's a bit of a slow burn, it just starts turning up the heat on all of the zaniness in the latter half really, and even then it's a series that expects a lot from the viewer to really follow it)

like you'd probably need familiarity with an unhealthy number of specific series to get the references (like in this one, how it's actually two series being referenced in wake up girls zoo and kemono friends)

Wixoss is fantastic and by far the best thing Okada has done tbh.

But it definitely lacks the wide appeal of something like Madoka even though that's a good "if you liked X..." for it
