Discussion Topic: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80708068 (if you want to complain about this topic series do it here and not in the current topic)

Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just tally the first 4 you say. If you list the same character multiple times it won't count. Be nice. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Have fun. If you're going to majorly change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

Console specific-rules: Hope by now you've figured out that these console topics are pretty open. No fan games/mods or future releases that work on original hardware. No compilations or multi-carts.

YESTERDAY: TONS of discourse and a huge variety of topics discussed. We had Castlevania: Discourse of the Night, Crash Bandiscourse, Gran Turdiscourse, and Tomb Raidiscourse.

Tomb Raider started way far out and I kind of wondered why there was so much discussion on the franchise when no one was even voting for it, but suddenly it started gaining steam, and I think after all the back-and-forth it might have had enough momentum to place 4th if the topic went on long enough

Gran Turismo did a little of what Tomb Raider did but on a smaller scale

Crash lead SotN for most of the topic by 1 but choked in the end, maybe because of the anti-Crash rhetoric that popped up towards the end?

Overall a great Rushmore topic and the reason I do these things

I think one dude was alt-voting a bunch of weird Digimon and Mega Man games though? You do you man

By "Getting to the end credits", does that mean my mom can just button mash her way to the end of one character's story in Tekken 3? I feel like even someone who sucks at video games could do that.

Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddys Kong Quest

And now for two personal picks.

Fire Emblem: Monsh no Nazo: still one of the very best FE games in my opinion. Getting both a remake of the first game and a whole second game following up on it was amazing. Playing Book II of FE3 was one of the most captivating gaming experiences Ive ever had.

The Lost Vikings II: Blizzard did more than Diablo/Warcraft/Starcraft. Going with the sequel, which I feel improved on the original. These games are great fun to play with another person: even though only one person will be at the controller, the nature of the games allows for you and whoever is with you to figure out the way forward together. I played these alone when I was younger, then again in the last few years with my now fiance, and I really recommend everyone give both Lost Vikings games a try with someone else right next to you. You wont regret it.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
Super Mario Kart

First 3 are a lock imo, although FF VI could be swapped with IV considering IV is the prototype. After that it's a wildfire. Super Mario Kart is basically the OG Mario spin-off which paved the way for every kart, sport, and party game that came after in the Mario franchise. Yoshi's Island is pretty much the first succesful Mario spin-off if I'm not mistaken. Street Fighter II is Street Fighter II, probably equivalent to GoldenEye on the N64. Star Fox is Mode 7 crazies.

My mother has beaten pokemon, so Final Fantasy VII is the best bet for the poll. She's also beaten the first Final Fantasy.

Super Mario World
Final Fantasy VI
Donkey Kong Country
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Mario World is a given.

Square RPGs need a representative. I never heard of Chrono Trigger until I was in high school. But it's still a good choice. But I think Final Fantasy VI was the pinnacle of Square RPGs on the SNES.

Donkey Kong Country was a very impressive game for its time.

And we round off with the big Zelda game for the SNES.

No SMW isn't really meant to be an edgy pick I more just think SNES is that stacked. 3/4 of the picks I have arguably created genres. DKC in a way created hype for next generation graphics in a way no game before it did and created a franchise.

SMW is basically just that well regarded release title for the SNES with a flagship Nintendo character which on most consoles would be enough but imo on SNES it isn't. It does nothing that SMB3 didn't already do really.

Well yeah, it was a phenomenon. Turbo and Super Turbo are considered the best versions of the game though. There's a reason no one plays the original SF2 anymore!

Also I love DKC2 as much as anyone here but picking that over DKC1 only makes sense if you're just trying to straight up pick the best games on the system regardless of any other criteria.

  • Super Mario World. Launch title, best selling game on the system.
  • Donkey Kong Country. Helped revitalize the old hardware to appear to compete with newer systems.
  • Street Fighter II. Counterpoint to the Genesis Rushmore. Best selling third party game on the system.
  • Chrono Trigger. I think an RPG is a must for the Rushmore. FF4 (and arguably 6) is better on other systems, the Seiken games and Ogre Battle aren't popular enough, and Earthbound wasn't loved in its time.
HMs: There are tons of great games, but only two that I considered seriously: Super Metroid and Mario Paint.

Super Mario Kart (coulda been DKC, SM, or MMX...but this mighta been the coolest multiplayer had ever been on consoles up to that point)

Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Street Fighter II
Chrono Trigger

SMW/DKC are basically in by default. SMW is the big launch game, spawned Yoshi - a pretty prominent character on this system - and is probably the most widely played game. DKC1 was the late life big swing that pushed the system over the Genesis at the end and its cultural impact far outshines DKC2 and 3's so that's why 1 is the first pick). The SNES being the first home console to get a decent SF2 port was a HUGE deal back in the day, at least on par with Genesis MK1 having the blood in it. It's still one of the most famous and best-selling 3rd party games on any Nintendo console, and I think it's very difficult to say SF2 didn't have at least a little impact on the SNES's success.

Originally I had LTTP in the last slot and yeah I'm not going to pretend LTTP shouldn't be here, but I also think a SNES rushmore would look ridiculous without an RPG and although Chrono Trigger may not be the most famous (that's probably FF6), it is probably the most "SNES" to me. That and I really wanted SF2 and viewed LTTP as more expendable than SMW or DKC.

other HMs: Super Metroid, Final Fantasy IV/VI, Super Mario Kart, Mega Man X, Star Fox, Earthbound, DKC2, Yoshi's Island, F-Zero, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Killer Instinct, Kirby Super Star

Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Donkey Kong Country
Super Metroid

Donkey Kong Country was such an enormous deal when it came out. The technology was really exciting, and it was what truly pushed the SNES to the top over the Mega Drive/Genesis. It was the highest selling non-pack in of the entire generation. Yeah 2 is the better game but the original was the huge push forward.

also I am surprised any game on the PS1 rushmore comfortably got into 3rd. RE1 is good pick on that though.

I was fully expecting a tally that had like FF7 and MGS with 60 votes each and then 8-10 games with around a dozen votes each.

I get thinking SNES should have an RPG here but not a single RPG mentioned in the topic is actually playable on my SNES. I think having no PAL release is a pretty large con and since the SNES has a top tier library even without RPGs, I think that's better. Besides, I don't think any of the RPG contenders are clear of each other.
