i always figured JRPGs were enough anime in my life

but i've watched attack on titan and death note now and enjoyed them both

i have no idea what kinds of animes there are

i watched dragonball and dragonball z as a child and would not be interested in something like that now. way too slow and low-stakes

trails series rankings, probably: FC > Azure > Zero > SC > 3rd > CS3 > CS4 > CS1 > CS2

is that enough information to be able to recommend things to me? preferably on streaming platforms that normies have? or is this a huge ask

These aren't similar to AoT or Death Note, but they're some of my favorites that I think have wide appeal if you feel like branching out.

Akudama Drive- a sci-fi action series about criminals doing a heist
A Place Further than the Universe- a slice-of-life show about girls going to Antarctica
Hinamatsuri- a comedy about a psychic girl being looked after by a yakuza

Hmm, I'd say some decent "gateway" series would include:

Cowboy Bebop
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Black Lagoon
Samurai Champloo

Pretty sure Bebop and Demon Slayer (at least the first two seasons and the movie between them) are on Netflix at least. idk about the others.

SpyxFamily if you want family fun (and ootings)
Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, and Gangsta. if you want different ways of Guns, bounty hunting, and (probably the word f*** somewhere)
Konosuba if you want fun (and explosions)
Madoka Magica if you want to feel depressed
Gankutsuou if you want to feel STYLISHLY depressed
PSYCHO-PASS if you want think tank melodrama, with a side of serial murder
Ghost in the Shell if you want think tank with...less series murder

Plenty to start with, with varying degrees of "I want to be happy, or I want shit to blow up and make me angry."

Legend of the Galactic Heroes, if not my favourite media of all time, is almost surely in the top 3.

Don't let the cheesy title or ancient graphics put you off. It's an epic space opera where in the future humanity has been split into two factions in a constant struggle, a democracy and a monarchy. Really great characters and great writing, just a lot of fun.

I also loved DBZ, Attack on Titan and Death Note! But LotGH is certainly a very different kind of anime than them, but still can't recommend it enough. It should still be available on HiDive and they have a free trial offer but it's 110 episodes (which go by fast, trust me) so probably more than the trial could handle...

Extremely surprised Steins;Gate hasn't been said, that's typically one of the first recs these topics get.

Baccano is the obvious one for me, but yeah can't stream it. However you also can't buy it new physically, so it's morally OK to pirate!

Names can only go so far so I'll post some trailers of my strongest recommendations.

The Trails list does not help because all of the Trails anime are terrible, and anime that are similar to Trails tend to be bad in general lol.

https://youtu.be/YzuJnyebc40?si=L-XlSJPIHPK4rTj5

https://youtu.be/z1ot-1HWJ6A?si=ACZ8r6T4gwtBO6nE

Trying not to just dump too much. This is a solid block that I think would appeal to what youre looking for. There are shows I would ranks above some of these and dozens more I could list, but theres little point in drowning you with choice.

I will also make a recommendation to you for Hunter x Hunter. While this is another long, sometimes intentionally slow Shounen like DBZ, it avoids almost all the trapping I think youd have issue with, and is tropically considered the gold standard for the genre nowadays.

The reason I didn't include it in my first post is idk if someone new to anime might bounce off the first 6 or so episodes

But with the added prompt of "something to think about" I decided to mention it.

Blade of the Immortal (the one on prime video)

oh yeah i think all of Aria the Animation/Natural/Origination is on prime video too (not sure if the more recent ovas/movies are there tho but they're not that connected anyway)

Evangelion and Death(true)2 and End of Evangelion on netflix

i think One Piece is also on netflix and not just the live action one

if you do the hidive trial i also rec Revue Starlight but like at that point you might as well just check out crunchyroll or funimation instead since it is absolutely just an anime-specific streaming service like them and it gets a lot less shows than them (it does have a lot of worthwhile ones though). I think they also have exclusive rights to VOTOMS which i would definitely recommend to anyone that enjoys legend of the galactic heroes

actually checking hidive's list of shows a lot more of them are fully worth watching imo than i realised. they've got a little over 250 series listed now (though some are just separate seasons) and i'd say honestly about 4 in 5 of them are worth watching. their movie section (with close to a hundred entries) mostly has OVA series in it, lots of neat underappreciated stuff i'm a fan of there too, had no idea they had them (eg. kaiju girls black, kase-san and morning glories, laidbackers, the penguindrum movies, the revue starlight movie, the kinmoza movie and ova, non non biyori vacation, the yuki yuna chibi spinoff, alice or alice... anti-rec to stuff like the magnificent kotobuki movie and the three initial d films they have since those are vastly inferior recap films)

honestly i'm tempted to renew my subscription there now lol

Parasyte is one of my favs that isn't recommended often. It's a lot like Death Note in style but more of a philosophical theme. The anime is really well written compared to the manga. (Unlike most anime where the manga is far superior, including Death Note which I highly recommend you to read.)

JoJo season 1 is super good for another shonen, and one of the best seasons of TV you can watch. Anti-rec season 2 and beyond though. They're fine but there's better things to watch.

One Punch Man season 1 is absolutely flawless, and a good follow up to the humor of JoJo. It really requires you to know the tropes of shonen though.

Cells At Work is another fav that's super fun and has real character. It's kinda like OPM where it uses shonen tropes and humor, but also has a surprising amount of emotion. And it's genuinely educational.

Also I'll anti-rec Madoka and Psycho Pass. You need to be wayyyyy deeper into anime to give the flaws in those a pass. Also there's so many 1-season shows you really don't need to start on the 20-season shows until much later tbh.

Mostly for Psycho Pass, writing is really bad. But maybe less exposure to anime actually makes that better. But if you've read or seen any similar story before (there's a ton) you'll prob be disappointed.

But Madoka is like OPM where you need to know the genre for it to make sense.
