I don't think either of those things are true at all, but to each their own! Certainly didn't have magical girl experience when I watched Madoka, and it literally got me back into anime after quiting 2 years prior.

opm s2 is mediocre but also s1 isn't much better so

Oh, lord, From the New World.

Now THAT would be a tough one to try and ease someone into. SO good, though, definitely one of the greatest even despite some stumbles.

Probably one of the worst dubs around unfortunately, something most of the series recommended in this topic don't have a problem with.

Speaking of rides, School Days is absurdly awful and enjoyable at the same time. Also requires genre tropes to understand but it's fun either way.

Hot take but I think Parasyte is one of the most overrated anime around. It's basically all about grossness and shock value. I found it very shallow so hearing what foolmo is saying about it is very funny to me.

There's body horror but there's like no shock value. It looks more "cool" than anything.

Barely anybody stays dead and most of the ones who do still get to hang around around with a halo over their head.

There's an infinite power creep with no cap.

Goku shook hands with a mass murdering genocider who's slaughtered billions including his previously dead now alive friends so that he could do cool power combos on a gray alien.

Nothing in that series actually matters lol. It's not necessarily a tax on it's entertainment value, but there are indeed no stakes, and nothing bad will ever stick.

parasite anime sucked read the manga

Parasyte anime is better than the manga the music is incredible.

The truncated pace made the conversations feel a lot more unnatural imo. The delivery of the script flows way better in the manga, which I think is extra important to something like parasyte.

I should actually recommend something though.

it does but you should still play it!

episode 1 is a lot of setup and even episode 2, but the ep2 ending hooks you, or at least it hooked me. It really is a ton of fun, I loved all the characters.

It's a slow burn to a low peak. Solid 7/10.

Anime almost always require like at least 5-10 episodes to get going.

Steins;Gate starts slow but pretty solid tie for my favorite anime of all time by the end.

well... 'attack on titan' and 'death note'... pretty much everybody likes those. they're both 10/10 series. so knowing that you like those doesn't give much information about your specific tastes.

I'm trying to think of JRPG-like stories, but it's difficult.

most anime don't capture the feeling of conventional fantasy stories very well. anime creators and consumers seem to love the story where a person from our world is taken to a fantasy setting. you don't usually get that earnest cast of fantasy characters who were born into a fantasy world, with a story that takes itself and the setting seriously, without having to read manga. even looking back further, all time classics like Spirited Away, Inuyasha, and Magic Knight Rayearth have modern day characters traveling to the fantasy setting.

here's what I came up with;

nanatsu no taizai - the series is nice but pretty flawed and I'm not sure I'd give it a glowing recommendation. it's not largely considered GREAT by any majority. I did love the first season but even that season has its flaws. that being said, it's unapologetically a fantasy story and doesn't try to shoehorn any modern day elements into the story at all.

queen's blade - I definitely wouldn't recommend this but I had to put it on the list because it is actually a legitimate fantasy series. actually, it kinda seems like there's a few of these trashy fanservice shows that take place completely in the fantasy setting with no isekai elements. huh.. I wonder why that is?

princess mononoke / castle in the sky / many others - there are studio ghibli films other than Spirited Away that actually take place completely in a fantasy setting with no modern day characters. these movies also fit the other 'attack on titan/death' note criteria; ghibli films are generally loved by everyone who watches them. it's a safe bet that you'd love most or all of these movies. I also recommend nausicaa, one of my favorite movies. although the setting blurs the line between fantasy and sci fi more than princess mononoke, it's great stuff. as a bonus there are actual JRPGs which are modeled in the style of the ghibli films. the game is called Ni no Kuni and it has at least one sequel that I know of. so yeah if you're looking for JRPG-esque anime, this might be a direction to look in.

out of the things I mentioned previously, I'll also say that the isekai elements don't take anything away from Magic Knight Rayearth or Spirited Away. I can't speak for Inuyasha because it's a really long show and I only watched bits and pieces of it... a very long time ago.

The issue with this one is I think more a couple episode scattered throughout. I'm sure you've noticed that episodes tend to switch director's pretty often and it's a notable difference between episodes, which I think is super cool but does lead to some unevenness.

But it's still a 10/10 show, even though it has some problems and there's one important episode I really hate, but a show that has stuff you hate and is still a 10/10 is real special.
