"no political parties" is impossible. Cooperation is needed to get anything done, and that's going to lead to alliances of like-minded people, which, over time, will organize into parties.

Our problem was designing an electoral system that basically guarantees that only two parties will ever meaningfully exist at a time.

Washington may have been a huge idealist, but he was also perhaps a tad politically short-sighted.

But he was what was needed right after the Revolution.

Neat.

It doesn't change the fact that politics literally cannot operate without parties.

Call them shit all you like, it is 100% impossible to get hundreds of people in a room together to try to pass policy without factions forming. People will work together to get stuff passed; that's the only way to get anything done.

"We'll, they're toxic" The alternative is to somehow get 535 people with completely different ideologies and no overlap to all run and get elected without appealing to any ideology overlap with any other candidate, and all somehow vote on policies without any communication or bridge-building between them. It's impossible to the point of absurdity.

Also, here's a fun little quote from Andrew Jackson.

Jackson was asked at the end of his presidency in 1837 if he had any regrets. "Yes," he replied. "I regret I was unable to shoot Henry Clay or to hang John C. Calhoun."

Note that this wasn't unprovoked. Calhoun openly talked about hoping that Jackson would be assassinated like Julius Caeser.

I think social media and affordable smartphones did more damage, but cable news paved the way. My aunt passed away before social media became ubiquitous and she stayed off of the internet but the only TV she watched was FOX News. Like 100% of the TV she watched was FOX News. She bought into some talking points but would openly talk about how embarrassing and obnoxious the Tea Party and Birther movements were.

I always wonder if she would have become radicalized if she ended up getting a smartphone and getting her news from Facebook groups and Twitter.

probably the most toxic in recent history (read: since Reagan's presidency), which frankly is how I actually interpreted the poll. there are people in office who are somehow convinced that industrialized mass murder was faked and there are people who have the nerve to suggest we "reach the other side of the aisle" for everyone to get along. fuck off.

I don't think I need to explain the American civil war, and frankly a ton of times before that (and several in-between the ACW and Reagan), being far worse generally because they had a lot more violence and death and what not but I think learning from all that should've set us up for a less toxic environment than the one we actually have.
