probably the most toxic in recent history (read: since Reagan's presidency), which frankly is how I actually interpreted the poll. there are people in office who are somehow convinced that industrialized mass murder was faked and there are people who have the nerve to suggest we "reach the other side of the aisle" for everyone to get along. fuck off.

I don't think I need to explain the American civil war, and frankly a ton of times before that (and several in-between the ACW and Reagan), being far worse generally because they had a lot more violence and death and what not but I think learning from all that should've set us up for a less toxic environment than the one we actually have.
