I think social media and affordable smartphones did more damage, but cable news paved the way. My aunt passed away before social media became ubiquitous and she stayed off of the internet but the only TV she watched was FOX News. Like 100% of the TV she watched was FOX News. She bought into some talking points but would openly talk about how embarrassing and obnoxious the Tea Party and Birther movements were.
