Sounds to me like Navajo Nation then doesn't have to respect their right to access to their lands or water, when they signed the treaty they only MEANT for it to cover then not now

As Gorsuch notes in his dissent, the Navajo Nation wasn't even asking the government to secure water rights yet, they were simply asking the federal government what their water rights even were under the treaty.

I'm not always here to do write-ups!

But yeah, shit is wild.

Information is tough to confirm because, well, Russia. But the Wagner group (PMC that has basically acted as a deniable army for Russia and basically a war crime manufacturer, they've been a major component in the invasion of Ukraine too) has basically announced a rebellion. They've allegedly seized control of the Rostov region, which is the Russian Military's Southern HQ (which is the main HQ for the invasion of Ukraine) and has also allegedly told the military there that they intend to march on Moscow if they don't get significant leadership change at the Ministry of Defense.

Whole bunch of road closure announcements, "everything is fine", "oh btw don't travel to these regions", "Moscow is upping its defenses" in the aftermath. Wagner is claiming the Russian military has attacked them, Russia denies it. Putin did a short address where he basically declared that the organizers behind the rebellion will suffer "inevitable consequences." But doesn't name Prigozhin (the head of Wagner) directly. It sounds like some clashes may have begun to break out between the two sides but again insanely hard to verify what's coming out of there.

So, yeah, looks very much like we have a coup attempt of some sorts occurring. Again, it's hard to tell which news is real and which isn't coming out of there when a lot of it is just randoms from Twitter and the major news orgs need the time to verify what's real and what isn't but I've heard wild stuff like Wagner showing signs that they are in fact seemingly heading towards Moscow.

Here's a general summary of the situation I copied from elsewhere.

- Putin systematically kills his opponents by pushing them out of windows or...you know the deal.
- Leader of the PMC, Prigozhin, criticizes the war efforts heavily because the PMC is taking a lot of losses and because Russia's army has issues.
- Putin cannot kill Prigozhin because he has too much power.
- Putin demans Prigozhin to return his army.
- Again, because the PMC is technically run independently from Russia, Prigozhin has a lot of control over it.
- Prigozhin knows that if he returns the army, he's going to die.
- He also knows that if he tries fighting, he's going to die.
- Since both those options are the same, he figures he has a better shot at holding the war against Ukraine hostage.
- Prigozhin takes over Rostov, which is both the base of operations for the invasion (closest major city to Ukraine) and the center for all supply lines.
- Prigozhin now effectively has the war against Ukraine hostage, as well as the Russian army. He cannot possibly fight them, as he only has around ~25,000 people. But Russia cannot dislodge him quickly since they are full on moved toward Ukraine.
- Russia also cannot simply attack him with the troops that are already in Ukraine without giving up the territory they got.
- ON TOP OF THAT, if Prigozhin just holds the city for a while, Russia won't be able to resupply its army in Ukraine and Ukraine will win anyway. So either Russia has to fight or negotiate, and he's a literal terrorist now(Russia put him on the list)

....And now it seems it's over. Well, sorta. It appears some deal was brokered between the two sides. Sounds like Wagner/Prigozhin is getting the leadership changes in the Ministry of Defense they wanted and in return are stopping their advance on Moscow and will return to invading Ukraine.

I'm... not sure how this really works for anyone involved really. Like kinda hard to believe Putin really just lets them get away with an an armed rebellion that has allegedly shot down Russian planes and was marching to Moscow. Meanwhile, he seems to have just caved to their demands hours after calling it a betrayal and there would be consequences.

Unfortunately, I think Wagner getting the leadership changes might be worse news for Ukraine because AFAIK they basically wanted more war crimes and shit.

Read a bit more and it seems to be what you'd expect.

Roberts/Libs/Kavanaugh/Barrett say "Uh, yeah state legislatures don't get to be immune from judicial review in elections" and Thomas/Gorsuch/Alito say, "But they should be!"

Well, to be more precise, Thomas's dissent can be divided into two parts - one (all 3 dissenters on) saying "This case is moot, we shouldn't be touching this and should let the lower court decision that said the legislature was right stand." and then a second part where he goes on to say, "But if we're going to talk about it anyway then absolutely they are." and Alito doesn't join the second part.

The practical effect of the decision is minimal in that the North Carolina Supreme Court, under a new Republican majority, already has undone its redistricting ruling.

Sounds about right for stuff like this.

Trump is used to getting away with it to be fair. He probably assumes brutal honesty will be good for him since he built his persona around it, so he can at least come off as a legal martyr to his supporters if nothing else.

Then I remember Bill Cosby got away with it because he incriminated himself and shouldn't have been sent to jail for his crimes at all. Fantastic.

I hope the recent run of decisions from SCOTUS shows people what they should have known all along - this group of 6 conservative justices (or even the 5 more conservative ones excluding the chief) do not vote anything like in lockstep. Rather, it's the liberal justices who usually vote as a bloc.

Of course I expect if the decisions on affirmative action and student loans come down the way they may, the media will be whipping up the right wing SCOTUS angle into a frenzy yet again. But it's really incredibly inaccurate.

There really are no words for this one

I don't trust that argument red sox. One of the advantages from a 6-3 court is you can negotiate times when you want a strong majority or weak majority, because all you really need is the majority and the rest is just appearances. We see it elsewhere with Senators and Representatives, so just because the Supreme Court has strong enough numbers to play both sides doesn't mean party unity is weak.

Was there similar evidence to this between 2018 after Kavanaugh and 2020 before Barrett? I don't recall anything like that beyond Gorsuch supporting Native Americans which seems to be its own trend.

If we were getting a lot of 5-4 decisions with one of the conservative justices joining the liberals in dissent, that might be the case, but we have been seeing a lot of cases in which the liberal side actually wins because at least 2 of the conservatives join them.

Switching Ginsburg for Barrett of course still makes a big difference because you are replacing one of the most liberal justices for one of the more conservative ones. But she's turned out to be probably less conservative than Alito and Thomas, and I recall she was hyped up (on both the left and right) as an incredibly right wing judge. And in the world where Reinquist holds on until he is replaced by Obama, so that instead of Roberts, we have a left wing justice, that would probably result in an even bigger shift.
