Apparently it's been confirmed by a youtube employee as an experiment that is currently only activating with a subset of its users, and consists of a popup asking you to disable your adblocker/subscribe to youtube premium if it detects one.

And if they legitimately want to push this forward there would be ways to implement it so that you would not be able to workaround it with noscript/ublock origin. Whether they'd go that far is another story.

A huge platform like youtube taking a more aggressive stance against ad blocking would surely lead to more effort put into circumventing such attempts. I can definitely see how this might backfire.

Most videos have sponsorships and brand deals that you can't block anyways, so it doesn't really matter. Although to be fair I would rather the money go directly to the creators anyways then get funneled through Youtube first.

Good luck.

I remember the thing that made me stop using Hulu was they implemented an anti-ad-blocker that instead of watching a 30 second commercial every 10 minutes, they would put up a 90 second splash screen telling you to disable your ad-blocker. If Hulu could do that over 10 years go, then Google could easily do it today.

And there are workarounds for something like that. If people need an even better one then they will get created.

You can't block twitch ads. They are baked into the video stream. You can only "hide" them.

It's not a thing. It's people who do not know how to block ads.

I can't believe TC made up some random crap and people are feeding it.
Oh wait I can. This is the internet.

It's absolutely a thing. People in the know have been talking about how Google desperately wants to figure out a way to stop people blocking YouTube ads entirely for a while now. They're just trying to figure out the best way to do it before it's fully implemented.

sveksii posted...

True, but if they legitimately want to push this forward there will shortly thereafter be people coming up with new workarounds and third-party programs that counter their blocking.

Adblocking mostly works the same way as piracy and counterfeiting. The people trying to stop it are constantly coming up with new ways to prevent it, and the people doing it constantly come up with new ways to bypass those methods. It's an arms race where both sides are constantly countering each other.

The real benefit to Google is that when new methods for adblocking are devised or created, it will take time for the majority of people to learn about them (if ever), so you create a window where people are seeing ads who otherwise wouldn't have. Which is the goal.

Google doesn't give a shit about your user experience. They care about money. And if you're using a free service you're not paying them for, your opinions are utterly worthless to them. You exist as a number they can sell to ad agencies and businesses, nothing more.

"People keep blocking our ads because they're annoying, disruptive, and sometimes downright harmful!"
"Maybe we should try to make them less annoying, disruptive, and sometimes downright harmful?"
"That's stupid, let's just make them even more intrusive so they work better on the remaining people while we figure out how to break the adblockers!"

And so the world turns...

Man, it's a good thing the paragraph containing that comment didn't additional sentences in it that explained the analogy in ways that made it obvious that he was not in any way trying to suggest that adblocking is piracy, otherwise you'd look pretty silly right now.

That aside, there is a case to be made that it is. Ad-supported content creators rely on those ads being seen to make money creating their content. In a sense, viewing the ads is the medium by which viewers pay for the content they're consuming, so if you block the ads, you're consuming the content without paying the indicated price. That definitely gets muddied a bit by the number of intermediaries between viewing the ad and paying the creator, as well as by the fact that advertisers know full well that the majority of people viewing a given ad won't go out and buy the product either way and have already taken that probability into account in deciding how much the ad slot is worth, but the core concept of consuming the product/service without paying the requested price still applies. Of course, it's also much easier to justify because the actual monetary component of that price that goes to the creator is so minuscule compared to the time, annoyance, and potential damage the viewer experiences, so it stands to reason that, even if we do call it piracy, it falls into the ream of morally acceptable piracy for most people. Still, the argument can easily be made.

If they just had banner ads near the video, it wouldn't be a concern. You can't convince me that they wouldn't still make money off of those.

I read this right after I left a Youtube stream that had an average 9 viewers for a channel that only has 500 subscribers and isn't even entitled to ad revenue or memberships.
Also if you want to actually know numbers, watch content creators that actually share their numbers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_9DVNpD0tk
A lot of these people make their money off of donations, memberships, and outside Youtube revenue. Not ads. Ads are vectors for the distribution of malware. I will not tolerate anyone who legitimately supports their existence.
