It's not a thing. It's people who do not know how to block ads.

It's absolutely a thing. People in the know have been talking about how Google desperately wants to figure out a way to stop people blocking YouTube ads entirely for a while now. They're just trying to figure out the best way to do it before it's fully implemented.

And if they legitimately want to push this forward there would be ways to implement it so that you would not be able to workaround it with noscript/ublock origin.

True, but if they legitimately want to push this forward there will shortly thereafter be people coming up with new workarounds and third-party programs that counter their blocking.

Adblocking mostly works the same way as piracy and counterfeiting. The people trying to stop it are constantly coming up with new ways to prevent it, and the people doing it constantly come up with new ways to bypass those methods. It's an arms race where both sides are constantly countering each other.

The real benefit to Google is that when new methods for adblocking are devised or created, it will take time for the majority of people to learn about them (if ever), so you create a window where people are seeing ads who otherwise wouldn't have. Which is the goal.

Google doesn't give a shit about your user experience. They care about money. And if you're using a free service you're not paying them for, your opinions are utterly worthless to them. You exist as a number they can sell to ad agencies and businesses, nothing more.
