I mean it is, and the inability to deal with that is a problem GameFAQs has had for at least 2 decades, but sites used to be much more willing to just ban you if you were being a shithead, with GameFAQs being unusually lenient. It feels like bans are much less common in the users-as-product social media era.

In other news:

https://rb.gy/2bt7m (Rollingstone)

Alabama continues the assault on women. "Don't worry, we're not going to charge women for having an abortion! We just want the doctors. *wink wink nudge nudge*"

In less than 5 years we've gone from "Roe v Wade is settled law" to "We just want to protect children from 15 weeks to birth." to "We just want to imprison women." Where will we be in 5 more years? Especially if Donald J. Trump wins or steals the 2024 election.

Just like with last year's elections, PA progressives swept moderate democrats that had republican fundraising in today's primaries.

And Jacksonville, FL has a democratic mayor for the first time in a while now in what was a pretty major underdog story. The republican in the race had 4x her funds and was the favorite to win at one point. It's not local so i haven't followed it very closely, but it was part of the summary i saw for today's results.

Not entirely politics-related, but I don't really understand what the verdict has been on Johnny Depp's legal problems. Best I can understand is that he is guilty of domestic and even sexual abuse of Amber Heard, but she's not entirely blameless? And speaking of recent actor controversies, I'm not even entirely sure Will Smith was in the wrong when he slugged Chris Rock. On the surface it was massively embarrassing, but in that case you're suggesting that the Oscars stage is a place to spew negativity with nigh-impunity. Most of Rock's comedy comes off as overly mean-spirited to me anyway.

The verdict was that Amber defamed Johnny by falsely accusing him of domestic violence. Also, the jury also awarded a smaller amount to Amber for Johnny defaming her about something. The net judgment was something like $8 million from Amber to Johnny which she probably couldn't afford. Then they settled on a lower amount and avoided the case being appealed.

SCOTUS update: They decided they would not touch Section 230 (the law that protects websites/providers from being held liable for things users post on them)

https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/18/23728423/supreme-court-section-230-gonzalez-google-twitter-taamneh-ruling

It was an unsigned order, but it comes paired with (and explicitly references) a unanimous decision they also decided today where they found that Google, Facebook, and Twitter could not be held liable for "aiding and abetting" ISIS following an attack they carried out on the basis that they used the sites to recruit and spread propaganda (the plantiff argument being that the algorithm benefited them)

Very technically speaking, the order saying they aren't going to touch Section 230 seems more "We think they lost so badly in the above case that it isn't even worth bothering looking at 230 because it wouldn't change the result here" and not "We are affirmatively saying Section 230 is fine as is get this shit outta here." But given the 9-0 ruling in the other case it seems probable they would leave Section 230 alone even if they had taken it up. Still, better they don't try and prove me wrong.

Glad those cases were struck down unanimously. The idea that Google/Twitter could be liable there is pretty ridiculous (and not being able to algorithmically sort stuff without picking up liability would completely break a ton of the internet).

MPD lieutenant charged for tipping off white supremacist group leader about impending warrant just ahead of Jan 6th.

https://twitter.com/NBCPolitics/status/1659563479328595970

Between July 2019 and January 2021, Tarrio and Lamond communicated "at least 500 times using cloud-based messaging services, including Google Voice, Apple iMessages, and Telegram, an encrypted messaging application," the indictment said. They sent approximately 145 messages using a secret chat function on Telegram that causes messages to disappear, the indictment charged, adding at least 101 of these messages were destroyed.
...
"I told them you are made up a lot of Latinos and blacks so not a racist thing. If anything I said it's political but then I drew attention to the Trump and American flags that were taken by Antifa and set on fire," Lamond wrote in a message contained in the indictment. "I said all those would have to be classified as hate crimes too."
...
Lamond said Jan. 8 that he hoped that none of the Proud Boys would be arrested, according to the indictment.

"Of course I can't say it officially, but personally I support you all and don't want to see your group's name or reputation dragged through the mud," he said in that message.

I think people are generally wrong that Biden could have gotten him out of this debt ceiling mess by playing hardball/saying he's willing to declare the debt ceiling unconstitutional or whatever, but I am very mad that Dems could have just unilaterally raised the debt ceiling last year and decided to punt instead

I don't know what the right strategy is here though it's hard to believe it's the one that the administration has taken thus far. To be fair, this was never going to be a great situation once the GOP retook the House. The ideal case was always going to be that McCarthy couldn't pass anything out of the House but enough of them decided to show vote for it (literally saying they didn't support the bill but wanted to just get something out there to worsen Biden's hand by pretending they're serious actors.)

I think there's a compelling case that says that had Biden simply declared he was going to mint the coin or any of the other options he has that it would remove any possibility the GOP could be dragged along to pass an increase because they could just sit back and let Biden assume all the responsibility for it, including any instability that might ensue once they just sued against whatever action he took.

OTOH, I don't think you can at all take those options off the table because otherwise you cede all the leverage so idk.

LordoftheMorons posted...

That's on Manchin and Sinema IIRC. The two of them came out ahead of it and said they refused to support such a thing and as a result there was never 50 votes to do it. There had been talk among Senate Dems of doing just that but that killed it because it no longer had the votes.

Democrats will never be able to play hardball with Republicans. They're not in the same league. Biden is as tough as they come on the D side of the aisle though.

This progressive nonsense about misinterpreting the 14th Amendment is absurd. Biden doesn't have the power to declare the debt ceiling unconstitutional and who do you imagine is going to lend money to the government when it's questionable whether the bonds they'd be buying are even valid? What kind of interest rates do you think lenders are going to demand for such loans? The US can service its debt despite the debt being gargantuan because the interest rates are low. If the interest rates go up a lot, we'll be broke.

Sorry to spam the topic, but with the presidential primary all nice and kicked off thanks to elon and ron having an impeccable team around them that perfectly launched their campaign... I found this to be a really interesting read.

https://reason.com/2023/05/24/the-republican-primary-consensus-for-sending-the-military-into-mexico/

I think what is most disconnected for me here is that they're saying do to the cartels like we did to isis... but the entity that conducted the largest attack on US soil in the modern era, we basically gave them full government control of an entire country on a silver player. Sure would stink if we happened to do that to a country that we shared a border with, no?

Hot take of the day, but there needs to be a movement started for Americans to stop paying taxes as protest.

Hit the government where it hurts and make it clear that it will be the norm until the rich, including taxes, are taxed appropriately and shitstains like DeSantis and Abbott face legal consequences for what they've been doing.

I'm kinda tired of supporting this monstrous government when I'm badly struggling, and I know I'm not alone.
