Also, I don't think CRA votes can be filibustered. That's more or less the point of the CRA - it allows an easier path for Congress to specifically overrule a regulation promulgated by the executive branch without having to pass a whole new law.

How'd this pass the Senate with only 50 votes? I thought pretty much everything needed 60, or at least that's what they say about why they can't pass anything people actually want.

I believe pretty much anything can pass with a simple majority unless somebody objects/filibusters, then it needs 60 for cloture? I'm probably missing some details.

There are also a handful of exemptions of things that can't be filibustered (most recent additions were presidential appointments and SC nominees).

This vote was done under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) which is one of several categories of votes that can't be subject to filibuster (or rather one of many categories of votes that the Senate has carved an exception out for while pretending that it is sacred and inviolable at other times.)

tl;dr: The Senate can reject a (recent - don't remember the time limit off the top of my head. 18 months keeps floating to mind but don't quote that) executive agency rule by a simple majority vote. It's usually used when there's a party change at the executive to prevent an outgoing admin from just imposing a bunch of rules in the lame duck/end of term by allowing Congress a means to reverse them.

The White House has said they will veto this. (And the House still has to vote on it but it probably passes there.)

More or less. It's more complicated than that (because of course it is, it's the Senate) but basically the filibuster can be thought of as "refusing to agree to end the time for debate" of a bill. So it just dies there because if the debate time can't end then you can't proceed to voting on the actual bill.

On a similar note, somehow it has only been this month where I've realized that people who complain about so-called thoughtcrimes online (at least on YouTube) tend to be the ones who make multi-hour videos of inflammatory statements. I'd ask how they get surprised at people rejecting their viewpoints, but I'm convinced at this point they're either bigots or unthinking animals. Possibly both. I guess I could get modded for saying this, but I think my usage of the term "animals" is more appropriate in this case than, say, white supremacists referring to people of color in the same breadth (which I admittedly take extra personally due to being born in the USA from Indian immigrants). Also no, this was not what I brought up earlier regarding the politics of people like the Critical Drinker.

That being said, to demonstrate one example of what I mean though, saying you think either Black Panther movie is terrible is not in and of itself racist. Making a two-or-so hour video called "Black Panther: An Unbridled Rage" is kind of racist, on the other hand. I don't understand how you can announce yourself to the world with such an inflammatory statement and then complain about being called racist for it, as if just the sheer act of criticizing the movie is what's being called racist when it's plainly obvious you're not doing that...then again it's MauLer, I guess I answered my own question lol.

In going to avoid watching for my own sanity, but i can't say I'm surprised.

I read separately that Crowder received very intense elective surgery to make his chest appear more "manly" right before his wife gave birth to twins. It was too combat his sunken chest that he had lived with for decades before then, but just had to decide to get it done right then.

Yeah, Dorsey has been open that his biggest regrets about old Twitter was basically "I was forced to have moderators" and was extremely pro-Musk takeover right up until like two weeks into his ownership when Musk backstabbed him and started scapegoating him and old Twitter with a shitload of lies to deflect from the garabage fire he was turning the company into.

IIRC, he has stated a desire to implement crypto shit too.

I do get the sinking feeling Bluesky is probably the best chance of being the replacement thanks to Dorsey being a known/"trusted" figure, the money lining up behind it, and not making some of the rookie mistakes the other alternatives had. Mastodon felt like the best option from what I can tell but they lost any chance they had to seize the moment with how the federated servers worked. Ironically, Truth had the right idea in that it was a Mastodon fork that just basically ignored federation so the end user never had to grapple with questions like "what is the fediverse." Which, I mean, on one hand Mastodon has its own mission and goals so it's not entirely fair to criticize them for not doing a 180 to take advantage of Twitter becoming a hellhole but damn if it wouldn't have been better for society I think.

I feel like the best case scenario is we get old Twitter back. But I think a more likely version is that we get a worse old Twitter that while still better than Musk's shithole takes a far more "libertarian" approach to moderation. Already they seem like they're outsourcing moderation to users unless you're flagrantly violating the law and basically saying "it's on you to block things you don't like, we're not gonna do shit."

I havent looked into any of these Twitter alternatives personally since Im lazy and none of them seemed to hit critical mass, but are any of them just basically a copy of Twitter but without a massive tool running things? Because that seems like kind of the obvious thing to do!

Surprisingly, not really AFAIK! I think Mastodon can basically be made to work that way (and I think has taken steps to address the earlier barriers to entry by setting up defaults instead of making the user decide on servers and such) but I definitely think it missed its moment.

I think the bouzy one is most regular-twitter-like of the lot... so it depends on your limit of the massive tool descriptor, but hey it's not Musk or the guy who described Musk as the chosen one to fix Twitter. Spoutible is an undeniably shit name though, have absolutely no idea how it's fairing personally since I never checked.

Cohost was never intended to be a Twitter, it's getting described more as a micro-blogger but honestly it is the one that I actually vibe with pretty well. Full-length posts, lots of embeds and formatting, and at least from my perspective just a very gay community (non-derogatory), albeit sparse and I don't see comments. No app though.

Hive was one that blew up pretty famously, possibly just as much as Bluesky is now.... but then it quite literally did blow up for like a week or two and that shattered momentum entirely. It was very Twitter-like though, although still reliant on hashtags rather than text search but it pushed a decent Discovery tab to support it. It was pulling pretty big names... but that was before it quickly exploded. I actually hung around it a long ass while to give it a chance but it was pretty clearly abandoned and I couldn't even cut the devs any slack as they clearly weren't prepared for the task of a large-scale social network - literally months pushing out updates to fix blocking that kept not actually fixing it.

Mastodon & Bluesky are fediverse. Mastodon was complained about for being complicated but it did nevertheless pick up joiners, probably as the leading alternative after everything else failed, and it was picking up big names with it. Still though the perception of complexity has remained a barrier, I've never bothered yet myself so I can't say more than that, it's technically not one network on its own but a conglomeration of many networks that can interact and that's probably not the best description but that's all I can give you. Bluesky though is actually intended to do the same, it's making big waves right now as a singular instance but the plan is for there to be countless servers with their own rulesets basically the same as Mastodon.

what else..... oh right Post for news-types... it seemed very stale and payment oriented as a platform again centering journalists hoping to open an avenue to get paid. not friendly to NSFW content so yeah it's very corporate and I don't think it caught on as an actual social platform

Another realization of mine, it's so priceless for people to complain about "thoughtcrimes" when they're putting all of their thoughts on the Internet in the most public way possible. Game designer Troy Leavitt (who recently stepped down from working on Hogwarts Legacy) put out a video long ago asking if thoughtcrimes are real and had a picture of Trump right on the thumbnail.
