Very good list, only really notable snub is Top Gun: Maverick for cinematography and Decision to Leave for International. Again a pretty well-rounded list with a lot of genres and different sizes of production. And when was the last time two sequels were nominated for Best Picture?

Also lol at the last two animated short names.

I'm so happy Stephanie Hsu got a nomination. She's been somewhat overlooked this award season as compared to her costars.

Also super stoked that Puss in Boots got a nomination. Though I'm not too confident the voters won't just go for Disney's annual release, even though Turning Red was pretty good.

EEAAO sweep let's go

Feels like this is EEAO vs. Banshees, which given that those are my #1 and #2 films of the year I cant complain about at all.

As for Animated I feel Pinocchio is the biggest lock here aside from Quan for Supporting Actor. Puss in Boots did amazingly well to get nominated though.

Bullet Train has a tight script. Definitely the tightest cast.

I liked Banshees but it had some waffling on its point that took it out of the conversation for me.

It's hard to place it in a category aside from Best Picture, Screenplay, and maybe Director, but I don't think a film has done a better job making every single character stand out.

Glass Onion getting a nom is more surprising than Bullet Train getting none anyhow, though.

By my count, only 5 of the acting nominees (Blanchett, Williams, Hirsch, Bassett) have been nominated before. That has to be a record.

Edit: Also, Blonde is the first NC-17 movie in 32 years to be nominated for an Academy Award (Best Actress)

Closest I can find is 2018 with Black Panther (you could debate how to classify sequels within the MCU) and A Star is Born (A remake of a remake of a remake)

nice to see Maverick for best picture even if it's just the classic "you made a bunch of money" pat-on-the-back nomination.

Angela Bassett first MCU acting nom?

....just googled to see who the favourite for Best Picture is and a betting website has Everything Everywhere All at Once as a pretty significant favourite to win (-163), followed by Banshees at +225, Maverick at +1000 and everything else beyond that?

I guess it's still early for those betting lines but geez.

Yeah it's been looking like EEAAO v Banshees for a while now since Fabelmans started dropping off. I'd be happy with either of them. But who knows!

Decision to Leave is a surprising miss, but internationals did well overall (All Quiet was not just a BAFTA thing!). Didn't expect Ostlund to be the international guy to get into directing! Haven't seen Triangle yet but I really like his work so pleased with that.

Thrilled for Paul Mescal.

Blonde is garbage and I'm upset it's nominated for anything

Keep a lookout for Tar as a dark horse best picture winner, otherwise I'm going pretty chalk across the board. And by chalk I mean it's a tossup between Banshees and EEAAO in anything they compete in, with them winning most categories that they don't compete in.

also if Elvis wins anything the academy can go fuck themselves, that movie is awful and only worth watching to see Butlers performance which is still not the best of the year

No anime in the animated category, huh? What a pity.

This was a stacked year for animation. Some are calling this the best animation category ever and I have a hard time disagreeing. Every nominee has at least a 94% RT score (and all but one are 95%+) which is kind of wild. The only anime contender was Masaaki Yuasas Inu-Oh which also had to compete with other western snubs like Wendell and Wild, The Bad Guys and My Fathers Dragon. The latter of which was Cartoon Saloons first ever snub despite Irish cinema having an incredible year for nominations. Tough, tough category this year.

I feel since they expanded the academy (including among other things a lot of new young members) a few years ago that issue has been largely solved, and results overall have improved a lot since. I also think theres enough overlap with all the other awards Pinocchio is already winning for it to be safe. If theres a challenge to Pinocchio its probably a late surge from Puss in Boots.

All 5 Best Director Nominees are nominated for Best Original Screenplay. I don't know if we've ever had a set of nominees be duplicated that way. If it wasn't for Tony Kushner co-writing The Fablemans, the two line ups would be exactly the same.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tar wins because the academy wants to make some weird point about cancel culture, would be extremely annoying but you never know

Rooting for EEAAO, but Banshees winning would be good too, both are great films. I'll be a little sad if Banshees wins but I'm also sort of expecting it because I think EEAAO is maybe just too weird (despite the fact that it got nominated for fucking everything)

Very sad to see a complete lack of Nope here, an actually great film unlike some of the shit they nominated like Elvis and Avatar

Top Gun Maverick getting a nom for best picture but not for cinematography is completely baffling to me because that was the only good thing about it; the way they were able to film all of the flying sequences is incredible and really deserves to win some kind of award. But the rest of the film is complete shit so I don't get it
