Midnight Suns I've really been anticipating. Totally plan to play it at some point but don't know when I'll get to it just yet

Horizon was one of my most anticipated of this year too and I still haven't gotten around to that

I thought a lot of the trailers look really interestingly stylized. The yellow aestehtic leaning really deep into this being the EDGY BOYS seemed cool - but then I see the game and it's pretty generic iron Man and Doctor Strange in their bright normal colors acting like knock off versions of the characters.

Kinda annoying to begin with they couldn't just lean into characters like Blade, Ghost Rider, Magik, Nico etc and just HAD to bring in the big normie characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Spiderman - but then it looks like the game actually isn't really carrying forward that trailer aesthetic anyways.

The gameplay I'm kinda 50/50 on. If they'd stuck with the tone I thought it was gonna have I'd probably give it a shot, but eh. Probably not.

Yeah I hope the game is mostly the none MCU people and the big name people have smaller roles.

Playing as Magik and Nico is the most interesting part for me.

I would say the focus is about 50/50 with edgy folks and the normies. They integrate it pretty well. Also, you can absolutely unlock different costume colors to give Iron Man and Doctor Strange a darker look too! The game does start you out with Iron Man and Strange but quickly throws the rest of the roster at you.

So far, they keep giving equal footing to everyone. The Avengers keep trying to take control of things and you have Nico and Magik complaining that they're being left out and that they don't care about Scarlet Witch being missing, and then eventually taking things into their own hands.

They devote an entire story to setting up a surprise birthday party for Magik that ends up really awesome.

Blade gets a focus one chapter where they have to sneak in somewhere. And it relates to your character a lot.

I just got to a part of the story where Spider-Man gets a focus to take down Venom and none of the Avengers are taking him seriously but all of the Midnight Suns are like "Nah screw you Spider-Man rules and he has more experience here than you losers!"

So far Robbie Ghost Rider has had the least amount of focus but I have no doubt he'll get something soon since Johnny Blaze has appeared in the game early. But his big thing is being put off that Tony Stark invited himself to his garage and is teetering the line between involving and judging too much.

I'm super impressed by how they managed to get the personalities of these characters so perfectly and keep weaving them in the minor and major stories.

Edit: Also Magik and Nico are two of my faves to play with, with Magik being my favorite. Everything she does is so damn cool and being able to manipulate the field with her is awesome. Her lines are always my favorite too since he has such a deadpan cutting wit, even in stuff like your group chat system they have set up.

Still think Avatar will have the biggest opening of the year. I was talking to my mom and she goes "I really want to see that new Avatar movie. I liked the last one a lot. I think I want to see it in theaters.". This, from someone who has no inclination to going to theaters anymore when everything is on streaming.

I know it's anecdotal, but to hear this coming unprovoked tells me it's going to be a big deal with a lot of people outside our cohort.

This was one thing that worried me at first

but that feeling was so much worse watching the IGN review refer to including "obscure" characters like Nico and Magik

That screenshot is definitely promising. Does Colossus appear at all? I know he isn't Midnight Suns or MCU but he is Magik's brother.

No but she talks about him sometimes. Mostly that her brother is annoying and is constantly asking her if she has been getting enough sleep and stuff. She talks about Kitty too, saying she was one of the only friends she made because she was so aggressively trying to be her friend she couldn't resist anymore.

There's soooo many references though. Moon Knight is constantly on their hero ops (off-screen missions), Ultron is referenced a few times, Kamala Khan is referenced as an annoying fan girl that wants to get deets on the Midnight Suns, Scarlet Witch has given shout outs to her brother Piotro, stories about Loki and Asgard are in the library, Nico is constantly referencing the Runaways.

Honestly if you're super into Marvel you'll be delighted by just simple references that they put in there. Tons of love in it for all things Marvel.

It is not. It's definitely it's own universe, but it seems to draw nearly everything from the comics lore of things. The only exception I've noticed is that Tony Stark appears to have created Ultron in this universe, which I was a bit annoyed by, but aside from that it seems 100% inspired by the comics.

on a tangentially related note, Im finally playing the GotG game from last year and its really great. Im loving this version of the characters, I even mostly like Peter despite how much he looks like a douche with that haircut. Also his actors Canadianess slips through a bit much. But mostly good !

Yeah the GotG game is great, I felt the combat was repetitive but I felt that otherwise they did an excellent job of capturing the feeling of the GotG movies in a video game, without retreading anything from the movies themselves (since it's not the same canon as the MCU)

yeah I also loved the Guardians game. I was expecting it to feel kinda like a movie retread but it actually had a really fun and interesting story to tell and did really well fleshing out the characters. Mantis was probably the best part again, but in a different way than from the movies.

Yeah admittedly combat's a little repetitive at times, but never in a way that stopped being enjoyable, the management of your team's abilities was the best part of the combat imo

Finally saw BP:WF in theaters, loved it! Wife said it was her favourite Marvel movie. Son loved it, and daughter said she is glad we picked instead of Puss in Boots. So overall I think the fam gives it a 4/4.
