Because Daddy Discovery said Flash tested very well and he approves of Millers Flash performance. At this point Im convinced Miller could murder someone and The Flash movie would still release without replacement

Also I get the feeling this is partly due to wanting to (re)introduce Keaton Batman in The Flash first, and with that in limbo people might be confused seeing Justice League's Commissioner Gordon with a different Batman?

Yeah, I saw that they were talking about how The Flash looked great and they were excited for people to see it at the Discovery presentation yesterday. Completely gross.

I really don't think that Flash is going to do as well as they may be hoping because of all of this news. And there's bound to be something else that happens with Ezra Miller before this movie comes out. Like you can't even have them do any media appearances because they're a criminal on the run from the law. It's just insane. They'd win a lot of good will back if they canned the movie and said they condemn the insanity of Ezra Miller, especially with how they want to re-build everything. Not a soul would blame them for ditching this film because of Ezra Miller. Is anyone even that excited for it?

Blows my mind.

The more I hear about Zaslav the less surprising it is, honestly.

Why cancel a movie that will make bank in China where they wont care about Miller being insane? I mean how can you possibly value morals and good publicity over making money?? Do you have a soul or something???

Is a solo Flash film really a big draw in China. Is it actually guaranteed to make bank there?

When the theaters arent closed for lockdowns China is a big money maker for movies in general really, but the superhero stuff seems to do quite well. Aquaman was pretty successful there if I recall

And yet the only two billion-dollar hits since the start of the pandemic were both denied release in China. Funny that.

They're kind of developing their own industry and that does much to block Hollywood's reach there. Then again I first learned of that from Midnight's Edge of all outlets, but given how many of the biggest post-pandemic (as in the start of it anyway) hits are Chinese movies I'm inclined to think there's a grain of truth.

All China cares about is special effects, enough of them means you've got a hit, ie Warcraft which is technically the biggest domestic flop in cinematic history making it's money back exclusively due to China. The lockdowns there are going to be a factor though.

And then they rejected Transformers 5.

Just a quick note back on the capitalism thing, there are also companies like Channel 4 which is publicly owned and not fir profit, but makes money using a market system and just funnels all its earnings back into funding projects. Not only do they make great TV but Film4 are responsible for many of the greatest films ever made.

Theres a reason that artists tend to lean left, because unrestrained free market economics are disastrous for the arts and always have been. Heres a relevant Gary Whitta tweet:

Yeah its important to remember that not everything is 4D chess. Sometimes people are just bad at stuff.

Also, on China, the recent move away from Hollywood films plus the pandemic there have really put a damper on that market especially given that studios only get 25% of the gross there while normally its about 50%. Take Warcraft for instance, which actually posted a small loss in cinemas despite making nearly 3x its budget, because it was so China-heavy. So you cant really depend on China to carry your film anymore.

Honestly the more completely insane shit comes out about Ezra the more I'm interested in watching the movie just to see why the fuck they insist on going forward with it. Maybe they're counting on this sicko effect to make them money.

I mean personally I would just pirate it. But they seem willing to risk a return.

They should just get Ryan George to do it via editing over Miller. Hed probably do it free super easy barely an inconvenience

Dan Murrell explained this pretty well. Zaslav's new strategy doesn't necessarily look bad on paper, it's more such a massive shift compared to before. Even if this is more business-related than creative, we've seen something analogous with WB itself before with Suicide Squad and Justice League.

Other than Peacemaker, Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn what else should I be watching before The Great HBO Max Purge?

The worst part is theres no telling what is even safe. Will the DC animated library just disappear? So much uncertainty. Ive seen nearly all of the DC animated movies on there at least so thats good. They just added Constantine: The House of Mystery which is a collection of a few shorts this month. I gotta see that still. Fuck I gotta watch all of Young Justice (it was way too long a gap between when it was brought back for me to remember anything) since thats an HBO Max Original too according to their app.

Probably a bad time to have never seen any of Adventure Time other than half the first episode. So much stuff Im going to have to watch because I thought I had all the time

Adventure Time proper is also on Hulu, it's just the post series specials that are HBO exclusive.

Also tangentially related, people asked me a while back why I saw disaster all over The Flash for including Keaton Batman and Supergirl prominently in the film indicating a seeming lack of faith in The Flash even discounting Ezra Miller's scandals, with me comparing it to Batman v. Superman including Wonder Woman and teases for the rest of the Justice League, when I could have easily seen similarly for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Well I have two reasons: first of all, Tom Holland's Spidey had been given much more of a shot to prove himself so there was no similar vibe of lacking faith in him, and second of all...the other two characters were still Spider-Man!

I keep forgetting I have Hulu because HBO Max and Disney+ cover so much of my interested show/movie wise >_>

I think anything relatively older that WB owns should be safe, because its way too late to do any kind of tax write-off thing with them

like I dont see why they would take down Adventure Time. the series ended a few years ago and aired on an actual tv network, so I cant imagine theres any way to write it off as a loss at this point.

There were rumors it was canceled but nothing official so yeah, probably saved by the internet.

Shame the first wave killed so many heavy hitters, but if it had happened in reverse then the backlash may not have been enough.

I heard that Harley Quinn is "very safe" or something along those lines.

I mean the Harley Quinn creators were already saying they were "hoping" they could get a season 4 before all of this, so I don't think there was any guarantee to begin with.

Zaslav's main goal is short-term profit. He clearly doesn't understand the concepts of branding, reputation, or public backlash. In that vein, shelving an extremely expensive movie that he thinks will do well at the box office is a bad idea to him.

We should all boycott Flash by watching Smiling Friends instead.
