Things are all kicking off now. Apparently the chief whip and Gove have both told Boris it's time to go.

Interestingly, Gove skipped PMQs to chat to someone on his mobile in the car park.

But he could have just been trying to score some coke tbf.

I can see him calling a GE out of spite to fuck the Tories over rather than just resigning.

What will happen when Nadine Dorries is the only person left in the cabinet, filling every role simultaneously, and leaves to be on another TV show? Does the government just shut down?

Definition of insanity.

Boris will be out of power the second he's forced out, and not a moment sooner.

He was just given a year of breathing room, too.
Cant they just rewrite the rules to let them hold another vote of no confidence

That's when Brexit gets done. Finally. Properly. There's a war on in Ukraine don't you know? I think Boris needs to pop over again for a visit with the old chap to see what he can do to help.

Someone explain this weird political system!

The 1922 Committee are a members' committee for the Conservative party - kind of like an oversight committee - who can trigger a vote of confidence in the party leadership if a high enough percentage of the Party's MPs write in to request one.

The rules currently state that if you survive a vote - as Johnson did in June - another one can't be called for a year. But because they're affiliated with the party rather than an official government thing, they can basically set their own rules, so if the committee vote to scrap the one year safe zone, there's technically no reason why they can't. The internal elections for places on the committee take place in a few weeks, and it was widely expected that they would scrap that rule after that anyway, but it looks like they're probably not going to wait until then.

I think that it's just because the people who formed it were all elected in 1922 (but they didn't form it that year), so it's like a "Class of 22" thing, but I'm not certain, so people smarter than me are free to correct me there.

MP tweets letter of no confidence in Johnson - while grilling him on committee
Huw Merriman
BBCCopyright: BBC

Huw Merriman has been grilling the PM on the Liaison Committee

We've seen a lot of Conservative MPs share their letters of no confidence in the prime minister on Twitter - but the timing of Huw Merriman's stands out.

Merriman's letter was posted on Twitter while he was grilling Boris Johnson at the Liaison Committee.

It is not clear if Merriman sent the tweet or if someone else sent it on his behalf.

Awkward, haha.

BREAKING
Welsh secretary among group delivering message to Johnson

Ione Wells

Westminster Correspondent, BBC News

As we've just told you, a group of cabinet ministers are set to tell Boris Johnson it's time to go.

Welsh Secretary Simon Hart is among them. He made it clear to No 10 yesterday that it was "game over" but it shouldnt have to come by ministerial resignations.

With Javid and Sunak it was most likely a case of seeing the writing on the wall and wanting to distance themselves as much as possible before they throw their hat in for a leadership contest.

Then the floodgates opened. Javid's speech this morning was basically calling out anyone who didn't resign as being complicit, and with Johnson all but fucked now nobody wants to be seen to be on the wrong side of this.

But, once again, when everyone is talking about principles over the next few days, it's worth remembering not only all the things they stood by Boris for, but also the fact that so many of them have explicitly mentioned that it was getting caught in a lie about promoting a sex pest rather than the actual act of promoting him that they objected to - they didn't like that it made them look bad.

The people quitting aren't stand-up guys and gals making a righteous stand in the face of Boris' bullshittery, they're people who have read the room and decided that it's more politically expedient to cast him aside now than it would be to curry favour with him.

Like Starmer put it this morning, "The sinking ship is fleeing the rat."

Sounds like the people who actually run the party are just exorcising Boris now that he's not so useful and are gearing up to take power themselves.
