Do you need to be a member of parliament in the UK to be appointed minister/secretary?

There are loopholes I believe where someone can be granted a peerage and then still be eligible (I think they did that to Mandelson in 2008-ish), but I'm not 100% sure.

100% this.

Far worse scandals have hit him and they stood by him. This is all about seeing the recent elections the Tories got utterly demolished in and wanting to save their own position and nothing else.

A bit of both. Sunak as Chancellor and Javid as Health Secretary were classes as "Cabinet Ministers" - they had major jobs that were considered a part of the innermost circle of government - they'd be analogous to the SoD.

Other Ministers were in charge of departments but not considered as "major" - they're Ministers of State, but on a tier lower than Secretaries of State, while other resignations still were Parliamentary Secretaries, the third tier who, work in Ministers of State's departments.

All are - and continue to be - elected MPs and hold a seat in Parliament, represent a constituency, carry a parliamentary vote etc., but they no longer have a role in Johnson's government.

So Johnson still has a clear majority in Parliament (not that they still support him), that hasn't changed, but until these roles are filled in the coming days, he effectively doesn't have a functioning government. I believe there's something like 170-180 governmental positions across the various tiers, so roughly a quarter have resigned over the last 30 hours (some, admittedly, replaced already).

Makes sense, thanks!

Brexit is done, you can't undo it. There's no political party in the UK that wishes to go through all that again - and its not like the EU would let us back in anyway. The closest you'll get is a Starmer government being on friendlier terms but there will be no rejoining of any customs union.

The straw that broke the camel's back was him promoting someone he knew to be a serial sex pest, then sending out a string of junior ministers to lie about it on TV.

But to be honest, at this point it's snowballed to the point that people are resigning because Boris isn't.

Suella Braverman has said she'll run. Hancock has said he won't.

Sunak and Javid will almost certainly try for it - the close timing of their resignations practically reeks of a race to be the first out for the optics in a leadership challenge.

Gove loves running for leader, so he'll no doubt throw his hat in, but won't do very well.

Liz Truss will probably end up inexplicably being the bookies' favourite, even though she is inept at everything.

Raab's utter silence in the last few days has been interesting. I wonder if he's waiting to be the one to deliver the "killer blow" so that he looks good for a run.

That's pretty gross, but also kinda par for the politician course, eh? Seems like they've just been hammering this guy for months and months now trying to get him out of power. I actually really like this aspect of the UK government, and I wish we had it over here in the US. If this was a story in the US the idea of the president resigning would not even be remotely considered; I like how your PM is on a much shorter leash.

Sure, it encourages the kinda backstabbery and opportunism you guys have been going through for awhile now with Johnson, but it's not like our politicians do anything anyways. I'd much rather they be sitting around scheming on how to get scumbags out of office than on how to rig the next election so they can stay in power and continue to do nothing.

Boris Johnson will resign as Conservative leader today - he will continue as Prime Minister until the autumn.

A Conservative leadership race will take place this summer and a new Prime Minister will be in place in time for the Tory party conference in October.

Tory MPs want reassurances Johnson will really be caretaker PM

Iain Watson

Political correspondent

So can Boris Johnson really stay on until the autumn, as he hopes?

"That's the whopping question," a former minister tells me.

It may be possible to make only essential ministerial appointments given the imminence of Parliament's summer recess.

But some Conservative MPs want reassurances that the outgoing prime minister will genuinely act as a caretaker and, as one put it, only half-jokingly, "not take us to war".
